Behind the Scenes: My Wild Week on SheKnowsTV’s HomeStretch Laundry Room Makeover

What an absolute whirlwind last week was! I plunged headfirst into a demanding yet incredibly rewarding project in Scottsdale, Arizona. My mission? To completely transform a laundry room for an exceptionally sweet and truly brave couple. They opened their home to me – a relative stranger – along with an entire production entourage, including interns, assistants, producers, and a camera crew, for two intense days. The entire laundry room makeover unfolded live, on camera, for SheKnowsTV’s popular series, HomeStretch.

The HomeStretch Challenge: A Race Against Time and Budget

Let me tell you, despite the immense stress and the insane amount of physical labor fueled by precious little sleep, I had an absolute blast! The entire crew quickly became like family, and I genuinely miss them already. Everyone was phenomenal – so much fun, wonderfully witty, and incredibly encouraging, especially during my inevitably awkward on-camera moments. They were gracious enough to offer constructive feedback with a smile, often saying things like, “That was great! Now let’s try it again with a little more… enthusiasm!” It’s moments like those that remind you how much effort goes into creating engaging television content.

For those unfamiliar with the series, HomeStretch is a fascinating design competition format. It pits two homes, two designers, and two days against each other, all with a modest budget of $2000. This setup creates a dynamic and thrilling challenge, pushing designers to be as creative and resourceful as possible under extreme time and financial constraints. Every decision, from material selection to execution, has to be precise and efficient, making for captivating television and a true test of a designer’s skills. It’s a rapid-fire home improvement sprint, not a marathon.

A Friendly Rivalry: Designing Alongside Sarah of Ugly Duckling House

One of the most enjoyable aspects of this experience was discovering who my fellow designer would be. As it turns out, it was someone many of you probably already know and admire: Sarah, the brilliant mind behind Ugly Duckling House! She is, in a word, pure awesomesauce – incredibly talented, endlessly creative, and just a joy to be around. We instantly clicked, sharing stories, strategies, and the occasional panicked glance over the tight schedules.

Sarah Awesomesauce

Sarah and I were both so intensely focused on our respective laundry room renovations that we barely had time for a proper meal together. Our schedules finally aligned one night around 11:00 PM, long after all the home improvement stores had closed and we were forced to halt our frantic shopping. We stumbled into an Applebee’s, collapsing into our chairs, practically falling asleep before our food arrived. (Neither of us actually had soup, but the image of almost dozing off face-first into a bowl makes for a good visual, doesn’t it?) It was a moment of much-needed levity and solidarity amidst the chaos, a brief respite where we could compare notes and share a laugh about the insane pace of reality television design.

This particular photo actually captures my laundry room project nearing completion, thanks in no small part to Sarah’s incredible generosity. She had finished her own house and, seeing that I was nowhere near done, came over to lend a hand. That’s true friendship and professionalism right there. (Shhhhh. Let’s just pretend you didn’t hear that part about me being far behind. Okay? We’ll keep that between us!) Her willingness to jump in and help a competitor truly speaks volumes about her character and the supportive atmosphere that, despite the competition, often blossoms among creatives.

See what I mean about Sarah? She’s the best!

The Glam Side of DIY: Hair, Makeup, and Camera-Ready Moments

Amidst the sawdust and paint splatters, there were also moments of unexpected glamour. I believe this was my very first time ever being in “Hair and Makeup” for a shoot. It was certainly a novel and rather fun experience, a stark contrast to my usual DIY attire and messy bun. It offered a brief escape from the physical demands of renovation, allowing me to feel a little polished and camera-ready, even if only for a short while.

The Reality of Renovation: Sweat, Tools, and Surprises

However, it wasn’t all fun and games and professional pampering. This project was genuinely hard work, pushing me to my absolute limits. I can honestly say I don’t recall ever being so utterly exhausted in my entire life. But then again, I have a tendency to quickly forget discomfort and move on, so perhaps my memory is conveniently selective! The physical toll of rapid-fire construction, coupled with the mental strain of designing on the fly and being constantly aware of the cameras, was a unique challenge.

Tool Troubles and Creative Solutions on a Tight Schedule

Things certainly could have gone a bit smoother with the right set of tools, but as any seasoned DIY enthusiast knows, you can’t plan for every tiny detail, especially when working on location! I arrived with my trusty circular saw, miter saw, drill, sander, and a 15-gauge nail gun. Installing delicate crown molding with a heavy-duty 15-gauge nail gun, I quickly discovered, is far from ideal – let’s just say it wasn’t an “awesome” experience, and required a lot of touch-ups and finesse.

To compound the challenges, my miter saw came equipped with a very dull blade, rendering it almost useless for clean cuts. To make matters worse, the blade was initially installed backward, which I only discovered when my production assistant went to cut some 2x4s for me, and I walked out to a scene of smoke billowing from the wood. It was a moment of panic mixed with pure disbelief! Then, to add another layer of frustration, I couldn’t locate the screw to release the blade guard. Thankfully, James, one of our resourceful sound guys, came to the rescue and found it. What an adventure in tool troubleshooting!

Despite these setbacks, I decided to embrace the chaos, roll with the punches, and simply see what we could accomplish with the time and supplies we had available. It forced me to be incredibly adaptable and think on my feet, finding creative solutions to unexpected problems. In a way, these hurdles made the experience even more memorable and rewarding, proving that ingenuity often shines brightest under pressure.

The Unsung Heroes: My Incredible Production Team

A massive shout-out is absolutely due to Shaun, my dedicated Production Assistant for the entire week! Shaun was nothing short of incredible. He truly was the “get it done guy.” If he didn’t know how to do something, he’d quickly figure it out, demonstrating remarkable initiative and problem-solving skills. I hadn’t known who would be assigned to assist me or what their skill set would be, so I was incredibly relieved and happy to discover that Shaun had valuable construction experience. Half the laundry room transformation simply wouldn’t have materialized without his tireless efforts. Thank you, Shaun! I am SO incredibly sorry you had to work so hard those two days; it was genuinely rough, and your dedication was truly appreciated.

My gratitude extends to the entire amazing team: the dedicated interns, the efficient production assistants, the meticulous camera crew who captured every detail, the sharp sound guys, and our visionary producers. Everyone who lent a hand, big or small, contributed immensely to the success of this project. Special mentions go out to Lita, Ted, Morgan, Dustin, Alex, Andrea, Erin, Charlie, James, Chelsea, and C. There was even the unsung hero whose back I literally stood on to meticulously caulk the crown molding – thank you, sir! And to Ryan, who missed turning in a paper because he came to help (yikes, hope that worked out for you!). By the end, there was a truly large and diverse crowd helping out, and I apologize if I didn’t catch everyone’s name. Your collective effort and positive energy made all the difference. Thanks, everyone!

Navigating the Filming Process: Time vs. Tasks

One of the biggest learning curves for me, much like a complete newbie to reality television, was understanding the true allocation of time. I naively thought “two days from 7 to 7” meant I would have a continuous 24 hours of uninterrupted work on the room. What I didn’t fully grasp was the significant amount of “down time” for actual construction work. There were extensive periods when we couldn’t make any noise because other cast members were being filmed for interviews, or when I myself was being interviewed. And, as you can imagine, no noise means absolutely no work, which severely impacted the project timeline for our laundry room design.

The Art of the Interview and the Pacing of Production

Furthermore, the first day was effectively only about a half-day of actual renovation work. This was due to the necessity of shooting all the initial interviews and introductions. This included crucial scenes like me walking up the street, en route to meet the homeowners, and the pivotal moment where I knocked on the door to finally meet the brave couple, James and Susie. They were fantastic on camera, natural and engaging. Me? Well, that’s another story entirely… The pacing of TV production is a delicate balance of capturing necessary footage, setting up shots, and managing various moving parts, often at the expense of continuous hands-on work.

My On-Camera Debut (and Multiple Takes)

let's try that again

This image might or might not depict the fifth time I had to walk back down the street, prepare myself, and then march purposefully up to the door to ring the doorbell for that perfect introductory shot. It takes a surprising number of takes to get those seemingly simple moments just right for television! Behind me are Ted (who usually masterfully hides behind the camera) and Erin (our incredible producer). I have a strong suspicion that both of them are people you’d definitely want to avoid in a high-stakes game of poker. I honestly couldn’t tell if they were genuinely encouraging or if they were skillfully “lying through their teeth” with their positive feedback. Regardless, their encouragement, real or not, was greatly appreciated. Thank goodness for that mystery! In moments like those, I’d rather remain ignorant of the truth than be self-conscious – any day of the week. This experience truly offered a unique insight into the intricate dance of reality TV production and the charming illusions it sometimes creates.

Awaiting the Episode: When to Watch

I guess we’ll just have to patiently wait until November to see how it all ultimately plays out on screen and to discern whether Ted and Erin were indeed telling the truth or simply masters of the poker face! The anticipation is building, and I’m just as excited as you are to see the final edited version of this unforgettable home renovation show.

Ted, Erin – I know where to find you both! 😉
