Embarking on the journey of homeownership often comes with its own unique set of joys and challenges. When we acquired our sprawling 11-acre property, we were immediately captivated by its serene flat lawn, the impressive, spacious workshop, the promise of ultimate privacy and seclusion, and, of course, the sheer abundance of mature trees. It truly felt like a dream come true, a perfect blend of natural beauty and practical space. However, as the initial excitement settled, a less romantic reality began to unfold: the formidable task of maintaining all those trees, the ever-encroaching brush, and the persistent weeds. Over the past few months, we’ve been deep in the trenches, truly coming to terms with the scale of the commitment we’ve made. It’s been an immersive learning experience, to say the least. Thankfully, we’ve armed ourselves with an arsenal of truly exceptional tools to tackle this monumental undertaking. This transformative experience, and the incredible results we’ve achieved, are proudly supported by STIHL power tools.

This year presented a fantastic opportunity to collaborate with STIHL, allowing us to put some of their cutting-edge AP series battery-powered power tools through their paces. This partnership provided the perfect impetus I needed to shift my focus from the daunting 7200 sq/ft workshop building – which, admittedly, had become a bit of an eyesore – and dedicate my energy to a much-needed outdoor cleanup. Apart from the regular lawn mowing, much of our expansive acreage had largely been overlooked since we moved here a year and a half ago. One of the most significant advantages for me, personally, is the ease of operation that comes with battery power. I’ve always struggled with the finicky nature of pull-start, gas-powered tools. The sheer convenience of knowing that all I need to do is keep the batteries charged to ensure a hassle-free start is a game-changer. This simplicity removes a major barrier, allowing me to dive into projects without dreading the startup process.

For a property of our size, demanding professional-grade power is non-negotiable, and the STIHL AP battery series tools deliver exactly that. They are engineered to provide robust performance, ensuring they can handle the most rigorous tasks without faltering. Throughout entire days of intensive outdoor work, I relied heavily on the incredible endurance of the AP 300 S Lithium-Ion Battery. This battery consistently powered the tools, allowing me to work for extended periods, day after day, without interruption. Its impressive runtime truly transformed how efficiently I could approach these large-scale clearing projects. The confidence that comes with having reliable, long-lasting power is invaluable when you’re facing down acres of overgrown vegetation.
One particular area on our property, situated to the right, had become what we affectionately — or perhaps, resignedly — called the “island” of trees and brush. A narrow path or drive circles its backside, and while I had walked this perimeter many times, I had never dared to venture deeper into its core. The reason was simple: beyond the trees, it was a dense, suffocating tangle of thorny weeds, aggressive vines, and unruly branches. These invasive growths had become so rampant that they severely overhung the grassy areas, making it an impossible task for Wes to mow there effectively. It was a neglected wilderness, visually unappealing and functionally obstructive, demanding a comprehensive solution.

Armed with my trusted chainsaw and pole pruner, I finally meandered into this challenging territory, ready to tackle what I initially envisioned as a simple “tidying up” project. However, what began as a modest intention quickly escalated into a monumental undertaking. With every cut and every cleared section, more dense undergrowth and hidden issues were revealed. The deeper I ventured into the “island,” the more apparent it became just how catastrophic the neglect of this area had been. It was an archaeological dig of sorts, uncovering layers of tangled vegetation and deadfall, each layer demanding more effort than the last. The scope of the work expanded exponentially with each passing hour, morphing from a quick trim to a full-blown land reclamation effort.

The problem wasn’t merely the patch of thorny vines that stubbornly overhung the grass, making mowing a nightmare. We discovered a far more pervasive issue: an aggressive infestation of invasive weed vines that had completely enveloped and choked almost every tree and shrub. These parasitic growths had climbed relentlessly, creating dense, impenetrable curtains of vegetation. Adding to this daunting scenario, numerous dead trees had either fallen completely, creating hazardous obstacles, or had become hopelessly entangled with other healthy trees, forming a precarious web of decay and obstruction. The sheer density and complexity of this overgrown landscape highlighted the urgent need for a systematic and powerful approach to restoration.

Our strategic approach began by addressing the perimeter, systematically working our way around the entire edge of the neglected area. This initial phase was critical for creating accessible pathways and reducing immediate hazards. The HTA 65 pole pruner proved to be an indispensable tool during this stage. Its extended reach allowed me to efficiently cut away the thorny, overhanging branches while maintaining a safe distance and keeping my body clear of the painful thorns. This was my very first experience utilizing a pole pruner, and I was genuinely astonished by its effectiveness and ease of use. It made quick work of even thick branches, transforming what would have been a perilous and time-consuming task into a remarkably straightforward one. While I understand it’s a professional-grade tool and not a toy, the HTA 65 provided an almost enjoyable, satisfying experience as it effortlessly sliced through the vegetation, making it genuinely fun to operate.

As I tirelessly cut and hauled branches, loading them onto our small trailer hitched to the Challenger, it became glaringly evident that this colossal job would require more than just my individual effort. The sheer volume of material and the physical exertion involved were immense; I was consistently logging between 20,000 to 25,000 steps a day, a testament to the strenuous nature of cutting and lugging heavy branches. Recognizing the scale of the task, Wes, Madison, and I dedicated multiple weekends to this shared endeavor. Together, we meticulously cut, hauled, and eventually burned the accumulated dead brush and branches. It was a concerted family effort, transforming a daunting individual project into a collaborative triumph.

Keeping a robust fire going in our large fire pit became an integral part of our workflow and a surprising source of motivation. Each time the trailer was filled to capacity, we’d drive it over to the pit, tossing more branches into the flames to maintain a steady burn. The satisfying crackle and the warm, vibrant glow of the fire offered a tangible reward for our relentless efforts. There was a unique, almost primal satisfaction in watching the piles of cleared debris transform into a controlled blaze. This continuous cycle of clearing and burning not only served a practical purpose but also provided a rhythmic momentum, an almost hypnotic encouragement that spurred me on to bring yet more “fuel” to the flames. It was a powerful reminder of the progress we were making, one branch at a time.

Once the perimeter was effectively cleared, the immediate threat of thorny encounters significantly diminished, making access to the deeper sections of the “island” much safer and more manageable. For tackling the lower branches and more substantial woody growth, the MSA 160 chainsaw proved to be the ideal tool. Its remarkable lightweight design and exceptional ease of handling were features I truly came to appreciate. Weighing less than 10 lbs, even with the AP 300 S battery attached, this chainsaw allowed for prolonged use without excessive fatigue. Furthermore, its impressive runtime of almost an hour per charge meant fewer interruptions and more continuous work. The MSA 160 delivered powerful, precise cuts, effortlessly slicing through even thicker sections, making it an indispensable asset in our land-clearing arsenal.

Wes and I had an honest discussion about the sheer scope of the remaining work, concluding that, realistically, it could easily take us every single weekend for an entire year to fully clear out the entire area. From the comfortable vantage point of our house, this dense thicket had always appeared to be nothing more than a picturesque, compact grove of trees. While it might have been precisely that at some point in the past, years of neglect and lack of management had allowed aggressive weed vines to completely take over, inflicting significant and lasting damage to the native vegetation. This once charming grove had transformed into an ecological battleground, a testament to nature’s relentless reclaiming power when left unchecked.

The invasive vines we encountered were truly unlike anything I had ever seen before. Some had grown to an incredible thickness, resembling robust tree trunks themselves. They weren’t merely climbing; they were actively strangling the trees. These relentless vines would ascend one tree, then loop gracefully across to adjacent trees, creating an incredibly intricate and unforgiving web. This dense entanglement meant that even after cutting them at the base, it was often impossible to simply pull them down. They were so deeply interwoven into the existing tree branches that attempting to remove them risked damaging the very trees we were trying to save. It was a powerful visual lesson in the destructive capabilities of unchecked invasive species.

Our strategy for combating these tenacious vines involved cutting them diligently at their base. Following this, we meticulously trimmed away as much of the remaining vine material from the trees as was physically possible without causing further harm to the host trees. This labor-intensive process was crucial for giving the struggling trees a fighting chance at recovery and growth. It’s a long-term battle against persistent overgrowth, requiring patience and consistent effort to reclaim the natural balance of the landscape.

After acknowledging that we ourselves had neglected this area for over a year and a half, we can only surmise that the previous owners likely followed a similar pattern. However, at some point, someone did spend time out there. This was definitively proven by the unexpected discovery of a small, faded plastic playhouse nestled deep within the heart of what we had dubbed “Thorny Island.” This forgotten relic told a silent story of past inhabitants. It must have been out there for at least a decade, considering the previous owners’ child was already in high school when we purchased the property. Retrieving that dingy, weather-beaten playhouse became an unexpected, yet deeply satisfying, personal objective. I was determined not to conclude my intense “outdoor cleanup job” for the season until this particular goal was achieved. And, with a final surge of effort, I finally did it – the playhouse was liberated from its overgrown prison.

The successful retrieval of that long-lost playhouse marked a significant milestone for me, serving as my designated “cut-off” point for concluding the more extensive outdoor cleanup efforts this year. At least, in terms of the intensive chainsaw and pole trimmer work. The battle against those tenacious invasive vines, however, is a continuous one. I’ll need to consistently keep them cut back, a task that can be efficiently managed with our weed trimmer, provided I address them regularly – ideally long before they have a chance to grow to a formidable six inches in diameter! Proactive maintenance is key to preventing them from once again overtaking the newly cleared areas.

So, one of us (and I’m definitely winking here!) will undoubtedly have to maintain a diligent schedule of trimming all the weeds and invasive vines to keep them firmly under control. Fortunately, this ongoing maintenance is a remarkably quick and easy job with the powerful and ergonomic FSA 85 weed trimmer. Its efficiency ensures that these regular upkeep tasks won’t become overwhelming, allowing us to preserve the hard-won progress in our extensive land-clearing project. This tool is truly designed for keeping challenging areas tamed with minimal effort.

Beyond the current stage, we’ve decided to pause our major clearing operations until spring. With all the leaves having fallen, it has become increasingly difficult to accurately distinguish between what is truly dead timber and what are merely bare, dormant branches. Waiting for spring will allow us to assess the remaining trees and vegetation with greater clarity, enabling more informed decisions about what needs to be removed. Our hope is that by clearing out the dense, destructive undergrowth, the remaining living trees will now have the vital space, light, and resources they need to not only survive but truly thrive. Furthermore, cutting down all those thorny vine and branch weeds has revealed numerous small, nascent evergreen trees that were previously suffocated. We’re now optimistically looking forward to giving them a genuine opportunity to grow and flourish in their newly liberated environment.

Maintaining an expansive 11-acre property is undoubtedly going to demand continuous effort and dedication. Throughout the weeks we spent immersed in this demanding work, Wes and I frequently found ourselves jokingly asking, “What exactly did we get ourselves into?!” While we were mostly jesting, the sentiment underscored the immense scale of the project. It’s an especially significant undertaking initially, primarily because the area had been ignored and neglected for far too long, allowing years of overgrowth to accumulate. However, we firmly believe that once we complete the arduous task of clearing out all the dead wood, the invasive species, and the improperly growing vegetation, the ongoing maintenance will become significantly more manageable. With renewed vigor and a clearer vision, we’ll be back at it again in the spring, ready to continue our journey of transforming this beautiful acreage.
Our heartfelt gratitude goes out to STIHL for providing such amazingly convenient, powerful, and user-friendly battery-powered tools. These innovative tools have been absolutely instrumental in making what could have been an overwhelming and arduous property clearing task as easy and efficient as possible. Their performance has truly transformed our ability to manage our extensive acreage, turning a daunting challenge into a rewarding endeavor.
