The Haven Conference Experience: A Journey of Inspiration, Growth, and Community Building
The closing speaker at the Haven conference delivered a powerful challenge: to embrace learning, foster continuous growth, push ourselves beyond our comfort zones, and be inspired to “do good in the world on a grand scale.” This profound message resonated deeply, igniting a clear goal within me, even if the exact path remains to be fully charted. Imagine the incredible transformation our world could undergo if this collective ambition became a shared reality for us all!
Haven, at its core, was an immersive experience designed to inspire and empower. It wasn’t just another event; it was a catalyst for creative minds, a convergence of talent, and a wellspring of renewed motivation for anyone passionate about DIY, home decor, and the blogging world.

Ana White — the keynote speaker — truly embodied awesomeness, even with her adorable baby bump! Her presence alone was a highlight, offering not just valuable insights but also a personal touch that made her message even more impactful for the DIY and woodworking community she champions.
Beyond the Keynote: A Holistic Conference Experience
A well-rounded conference like Haven masterfully blends various elements to ensure maximum engagement and benefit for attendees. There were countless sessions meticulously designed for learning, offering a wealth of knowledge on diverse topics ranging from advanced carpentry techniques to optimizing social media strategies for bloggers. Beyond the educational aspect, vibrant parties provided ample opportunities for dancing, laughter, and unwinding, fostering a relaxed environment crucial for genuine connection. Nourishing meals kept everyone energized, while an abundant supply of coffee ensured we could all stay awake and make the most of every precious moment across those two short, action-packed days.
The Foundational Principle: You Get What You Put In
Perhaps the most critical takeaway from attending Haven, or indeed any professional conference, is an undeniable truth: you get out of it precisely what you put into it. This isn’t merely a platitude; it’s a fundamental principle that dictates the depth of your learning, the strength of your connections, and the overall value you derive from such an event. It’s an active process of reciprocity. You give your attention, your questions, your ideas, and your willingness to connect. In return, you take away knowledge, inspiration, new perspectives, and invaluable relationships.
This philosophy extends beyond individual gain. It’s about looking out for others, offering support and encouragement, and in turn, experiencing the profound satisfaction of having others look out for you. My sincere hope is that every single attendee departed from Haven with a tangible sense of accomplishment – having learned something new, forged meaningful friendships, and perhaps most importantly, discovered a potential tribe within this vibrant community.
Cultivating Your Creative Tribe: The Power of Community
What exactly is a “tribe” in the context of the DIY and blogging world? It’s more than just a group of acquaintances. A tribe consists of people you can genuinely help and from whom you can learn invaluable lessons. They are your trusted posse, your unwavering support group, and individuals who truly “get” you. Within this tribe, there’s a mutual understanding and shared passion, a feeling of belonging where you “got” each other through thick and thin. This symbiotic relationship is crucial for sustained motivation and growth in any creative endeavor.
It’s important to remember that a strong tribe doesn’t materialize overnight, much like blogging success doesn’t happen instantaneously. In fact, what truly worthwhile endeavor in life ever does? Building genuine connections, fostering a supportive community, and achieving long-term success all require consistent effort, patience, and a genuine investment of time and energy. The magic of a conference like Haven lies in providing the fertile ground where these seeds of community can be planted and nurtured.
To cultivate your tribe and maximize your conference experience, simple yet profound actions are key:
- Reach out to others: Don’t wait to be approached; initiate conversations and extend invitations.
- Be kind: A friendly demeanor and genuine interest are magnets for positive connections.
- Be interested: Ask questions, listen actively, and show genuine curiosity about others’ projects and passions.
- Be invested: Offer support, share your knowledge, and be willing to contribute to the collective good of the community.
Once again, the principle holds true: You GET out what you PUT IN!

Practical Innovations: A Shout-Out to Duluth Trading Co. Aprons
On a more practical note, I must extend a heartfelt shout-out to Duluth Trading Co. for their incredible generosity. They kindly allowed Brittany and me to borrow their aprons from their booth for our class, and the experience was truly eye-opening. I am absolutely convinced that I need a couple of these for permanent use in my own workshop!
These aprons boast ingenious design features that make them exceptionally practical for anyone involved in DIY, woodworking, or crafting:
- Mesh Bottom Pockets: A brilliant innovation, the pockets feature mesh on the bottom, allowing sawdust, wood shavings, and other debris to simply fall through. This prevents annoying buildup and keeps your pockets clear and functional, a detail every DIY enthusiast will appreciate.
- Comfortable Strap Design: The apron incorporates a smart strap system that goes up the back and pulls down the shoulder straps. This ergonomic design significantly reduces irritation on the neck, even during long hours of work, ensuring comfort and focus on your project.
Both the men’s and women’s versions were remarkably comfy. A humorous side note: the men’s apron, being longer, completely covered my shorts on the second day of our class, leading to a few double-takes and the amusing illusion that I wasn’t wearing pants – but rest assured, I absolutely was!

Carrying the Momentum Forward: Post-Conference Reflections
That concludes my immediate reflections on the Haven conference for now. The energy, the lessons, and the connections made are still very much alive within me. The days since have been a flurry of activity and continued inspiration, fueling late nights of planning and creation. Perhaps that’s why I’ve been relying on a lot of coffee these days!
The journey of learning and applying new skills continues. Soon, I’ll be sharing a dedicated post filled with all my trim tips, building on the knowledge and enthusiasm sparked at Haven.
