Transforming The Lodge: A Deep Dive into Our Latest Renovation Milestones
We hope this update finds you in good health and high spirits. After a refreshing three-week break over the holidays, our dedicated team plunged back into the exciting journey of transforming “The Lodge.” As anyone involved in a significant renovation project knows, plans are rarely set in stone. True to form, we’ve embraced a few dynamic shifts in our strategy since our last communication, leading to even more innovative design choices and functional improvements. This post will walk you through the significant strides we’ve made, from critical insulation upgrades to a complete HVAC system overhaul, and even an exhilarating, albeit unplanned, addition: a spacious new loft!

Essential Upgrades: Mastering Energy Efficiency with Spray Foam Insulation
One of the most impactful improvements we’ve completed recently is the installation of superior insulation throughout The Lodge. Investing in high-quality insulation is paramount for any modern renovation, directly impacting energy efficiency, comfort, and the long-term sustainability of the building. For this critical phase, we opted for closed-cell spray foam insulation, a choice driven by its exceptional thermal performance and air-sealing capabilities. This advanced insulation was meticulously applied to both the ceiling/roof structure and the solid back concrete wall, creating an impenetrable thermal envelope that will significantly reduce heating and cooling costs while providing a consistent, comfortable indoor environment year-round.
Before the new spray foam could be installed, however, we faced the necessary task of removing the existing, outdated insulation. This older material had been laid directly onto the structural elements before the roof was put in place, making its removal a potential challenge. To our pleasant surprise, the old insulation came out far easier than anticipated. We systematically cut along the metal beams, allowing us to pull down large sections efficiently. This initial demolition phase, while messy, was immensely satisfying, clearing the way for a truly modern and energy-efficient solution. This step alone marks a huge leap forward in making The Lodge a truly comfortable and sustainable space.

During the insulation removal, we encountered a fascinating, albeit unwelcome, discovery. The ridge beam, a crucial structural element, was surprisingly full of leaves and nut shells. It quickly became apparent that we had inadvertently disturbed a rather “cozy” critter nest! While an unexpected find, it highlighted the importance of thorough inspection and preparation in any renovation. Ensuring all nooks and crannies are clean and free of pests is vital for the longevity and integrity of a new insulation system. We made sure to clear all debris, ensuring a pristine surface for the new spray foam application and preventing any future unwelcome guests.

Rethinking Climate Control: The HVAC Overhaul and Embracing Mini-Splits
Before the decision to switch our HVAC approach, we had spent considerable time and effort working around the existing ductwork. This involved contorting ourselves into awkward positions, navigating under and around the old system, all under the assumption that we would be repurposing it. The laborious nature of this work made us keenly aware of the space constraints and potential inefficiencies of the traditional ducted system for The Lodge. It was a clear signal that a fresh perspective was needed on our heating and cooling strategy. This hands-on experience ultimately paved the way for a more efficient and space-saving solution.

Following an insightful consultation with our trusted HVAC company, a pivotal decision was made: we would transition to a mini-split system for the entire back half of The Lodge. This change wasn’t made lightly, but the benefits of ductless mini-splits—such as superior energy efficiency, zoned climate control, and whisper-quiet operation—became overwhelmingly clear. These systems offer unparalleled flexibility, allowing us to heat or cool specific areas independently, which is ideal for a multi-purpose space like The Lodge. Once this strategic decision was finalized, the next step was straightforward: the complete removal of all the old, bulky ductwork that had previously dictated so much of our planning.

The sheer volume of material removed during this phase was staggering. The old insulation, the extensive network of ducting, and various other demolition debris accumulated into a massive pile. It took no less than four separate trips to the dump to fully clear out this enormous quantity of waste. This logistical challenge highlights the often-underestimated effort involved in debris removal during major renovation projects. However, the immediate reward was palpable: with the ductwork gone, the entire space felt dramatically larger and far more open, instantly transforming the atmosphere of The Lodge and sparking new ideas for its layout and functionality.

An Unplanned Triumph: Introducing The Lodge’s New Loft Space
The sudden spaciousness achieved by removing the old ductwork sparked an exciting new vision for The Lodge. Julie and I immediately began to envision additional opportunities and design elements that simply hadn’t been possible or even considered before. This ‘aha!’ moment led to another significant, yet incredibly thrilling, change of plans: The Lodge is now going to feature a magnificent loft! This decision emerged organically from the reclaimed volume and the desire to maximize every square foot of the newly expansive space. A loft will not only add significant usable area but also introduce a unique architectural feature, enhancing the overall aesthetic and versatility of the interior.
Integrating a loft into our plans meant adjusting some of the existing structural elements. We had to remove and/or relocate a couple of walls once again to accommodate the new upstairs level and ensure proper support and flow. While changing plans mid-project can sometimes be daunting, we were fortunate that at this stage, it primarily involved adjusting framing. Framing modifications, though requiring careful planning and execution, are considerably less complex than altering finished walls or established utilities. This adaptability in the early stages of construction allows for creative freedom and the ability to truly optimize the space as new ideas emerge. The addition of the loft is set to become a defining feature of The Lodge, promising elevated views and an exciting new dimension to the interior layout.

The Dynamic Duo (Plus One): Teamwork and Construction Realities
Our construction site has become a microclimate of its own, with temperatures fluctuating wildly from tank top weather to requiring full sweaters, sometimes within the same day! This unpredictable climate keeps us on our toes and ensures we’re always dressed in layers, ready for anything. It’s a small, quirky aspect of our daily work, but it definitely adds to the unique experience of building The Lodge, reminding us that every day brings a new set of conditions to adapt to.

Primarily, the construction of The Lodge has been a dedicated effort by myself, Julie, and Terry. We form a small but efficient core team, each contributing our unique skills and muscle to bring this vision to life. Last weekend, however, we were incredibly grateful to have an extra set of muscles join us. This additional help proved invaluable, especially when it came to hauling heavy materials like the numerous 16-foot 2×12 boards and sheets of OSB upstairs for the loft construction. Projects of this scale truly underscore the importance of teamwork and how a little extra support can make a monumental difference in tackling the physically demanding aspects of construction.

An Unforeseen Pause: Navigating Project Delays Amidst Health Challenges
Our original plan for this upcoming weekend was to push hard on finishing the remaining framing work, kickstarting the electrical rough-in, and consulting with a plumber to outline the next steps for our plumbing system. However, life, as it often does, threw an unexpected curveball into our meticulously laid plans. Earlier this week, Wes experienced a sudden loss of his sense of smell and taste, and I began to develop a persistent cough. Recognizing these all-too-familiar symptoms, we promptly sought COVID-19 testing. The results confirmed our suspicions: we have tested positive for the virus.

Consequently, the construction of The Lodge is once again temporarily paused as we adhere to necessary quarantine protocols. So far, my symptoms are relatively mild, mainly a headache and a persistent cough. Wes, unfortunately, is experiencing the more pronounced loss of smell and taste, alongside a headache. We sincerely hope that our cases remain mild and that this is the extent of our struggle with the virus. The past few years have been incredibly challenging for so many, with countless lives turned upside down by this pandemic. Our deepest thoughts and sympathies are with those who are battling severe illness, those who have tragically lost loved ones, and those who are facing immense financial hardship as a result. It remains a bizarre and often frightening period, but despite these setbacks, we hold onto hope that brighter days are ahead and that collective resilience will see us through.
For now, our focus shifts from construction to recovery and ensuring the health and safety of ourselves and those around us. We urge everyone to remain vigilant, stay safe, and continue to look out for one another during these trying times. The Lodge will be here, waiting patiently for our return, and we are confident that we will resume our exciting work once we are fully recovered and cleared to proceed. Until then, we appreciate your understanding and continued support on this renovation journey.
Stay safe – and hang in there.
