Welcome to Sawdust Girl’s Authentic Home Tour: Real Renovations, Real Life

Good morning and a warm welcome to all who are joining us today! I’m absolutely thrilled to be participating in this summer’s highly anticipated Summer Tour of Homes, generously hosted by Gina of The Shabby Creek Cottage. It’s an honor to share a glimpse into my world of sawdust and dedicated DIY.

If you’re new to the “Sawdust Girl” community, allow me to introduce myself. I’m Sandra, and my passion lies in transforming spaces with my own hands. My home isn’t just a place to live; it’s my ongoing canvas, a testament to what dedication, a saw, and a clear vision can achieve. My journey involves everything from tearing down existing walls to thoughtfully designing and constructing custom cabinetry. You’ll often find me knee-deep in a project, tackling most of the work myself for three core reasons:

  1. **Significant Cost Savings:** DIY allows me to achieve high-end results without the premium price tag of professional labor.
  2. **Uncompromising Personalization:** I believe a home should reflect its owner’s unique style and needs. Doing it myself ensures every detail is exactly as I envision it.
  3. **Guaranteed Quality and Craftsmanship:** When I build it, I know it’s built right – to my exacting standards, ensuring durability and timeless appeal.

This inspiring home tour series began on Monday, and as I clicked through the stunning, perfectly styled homes of my fellow participants, I must admit, a wave of honest anxiety washed over me. It’s a common and relatable feeling when showcasing a home that truly lives and breathes, especially one that’s a perpetual “work in progress.” The contrast between polished perfection and my current reality felt stark for a moment.

The unfiltered truth is that approximately 90% of my house is either currently undergoing construction or serving as temporary storage for the myriad of tools, materials, and personal belongings displaced by ongoing projects. So, in essence, much of my home, at this very moment, resembles the dynamic, bustling heart of a creative workshop rather than a pristine showroom. It’s a testament to the continuous evolution of a true DIY home.

But fear not! Despite the current state of organized chaos in many areas, I do have a few sanctuary spaces that are largely complete and ready for their moment in the spotlight. These rooms offer a glimpse into the finished vision, and I’m delighted to share them with you. Consider it an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the journey from raw potential to refined beauty. For the parts still under wraps, well, you’ll just have to imagine the exciting transformation yet to come! Let’s embark on this authentic tour together.

The Executive Master Closet: From Wacky to Wonderful Organization

Luxurious and highly organized master closet, showcasing custom cabinetry, ample storage, and elegant design by Sawdust Girl.

Let’s begin with one of my most satisfying and impactful transformations: the master closet. This space started as what I affectionately call a “wacky” layout – an inefficient, uninspiring area crying out for a complete overhaul. I dedicated four intensive months to this project, meticulously tearing out the ugly and building awesome. It wasn’t just about aesthetics; it was fundamentally about creating highly functional, custom storage solutions meticulously tailored to our needs and lifestyle.

The transformation is truly remarkable. We replaced standard, builder-grade fixtures with bespoke shelving, custom drawers, and efficient hanging solutions that maximize every inch of vertical and horizontal space. The goal was to create a luxurious and organized retreat, a space that feels both inherently practical and subtly indulgent. The dramatic before-and-after contrast speaks volumes about the power of thoughtful design and meticulous craftsmanship, proving that even a closet can be a masterpiece.

A recent addition that really elevated the space and infused it with character is the stunning plank wall. This feature adds undeniable texture, rustic charm, and a touch of modern farmhouse elegance, effortlessly transforming a simple wall into a captivating focal point within the closet. It’s these thoughtful, handcrafted details that truly make a DIY project shine and distinguish a personalized space.

And, of course, what’s a functional and beautifully designed closet without clothes to bring it to life? We strategically incorporated some vibrant pieces from our wardrobe to introduce a beautiful pop of color against the serene backdrop of the custom cabinetry. It truly enhances the overall aesthetic, don’t you think? It demonstrates how even practical elements can contribute significantly to the visual appeal and inviting atmosphere of a well-designed room.

The Screened-in Porch: Our Serene Outdoor Retreat

Beautifully decorated screened-in porch, featuring comfortable seating and a cozy atmosphere for outdoor relaxation in a DIY home.

Next, let’s step out onto our tranquil screened-in porch. When we first acquired the house, this entire space was clad in natural pine. While charming in its rustic way, it lacked the light, airy, and refined feel we desired for an everyday outdoor living area. Our journey to transform it involved a few key steps. We invested in professional painters to lighten and brighten the substantial pine surfaces, creating a fresh, inviting canvas. My husband, Wes, and I then collaborated to meticulously install the screens, a project that required patience but ultimately yielded a practical and delightfully bug-free outdoor oasis, perfect for enjoying nature without the nuisances.

The transformation wasn’t instant, which is often the case with truly personalized spaces. Sometimes, the best rooms evolve gracefully over time as needs and inspiration align. It took us about a year after the initial structural work to finally choose and bring in the perfect, comfortable outdoor furniture. But the wait was absolutely worth it. Now, it stands as a truly lovely and inviting space, ideal for savoring a quiet cup of coffee on a crisp morning, unwinding with a captivating book on a lazy afternoon, or hosting casual gatherings with friends. It seamlessly blends indoor comfort with the refreshing ambiance of the outdoors, making it one of our most cherished spots in the house.

Madison’s Creative Haven: A Personalized Kid’s Bedroom

Stepping inside, we’ll visit Madison’s bedroom – a truly personalized space crafted with immense love and creative ingenuity. (For those who might recall my earlier work, my blog was once known as Sawdust and Paper Scraps, a name that perfectly encapsulated the blend of robust woodworking and delicate craft projects I embraced in my earlier days.)

This room is a vibrant testament to how dedicated DIY can create unique and supremely functional solutions tailored specifically for a child’s evolving needs and blossoming interests. I personally designed and built her ingenious storage benches, which not only provide ample, accessible space for toys, books, and art supplies but also double as comfortable seating, maximizing the room’s versatility. Complementing these, a charming little hanging shelf proudly displays chalk and markers, perfectly positioned for her interactive vinyl chalkboard wall – a fantastic and ever-changing feature for spontaneous creative expression and learning.

Even her elegant mirror has a unique, DIY success story. It began its life as a plain, uninspired builder’s mirror, originally destined for a utilitarian bathroom. I salvaged it, carefully cut it down to a more appropriate size, and then meticulously crafted a custom frame, transforming a mundane object into a stylish and deeply personal piece that perfectly suits her room’s whimsical yet sophisticated aesthetic. These custom, handcrafted touches truly make her bedroom not just a place to sleep, but a vibrant, inspiring, and adaptable space for her to grow, play, and dream.

The Elegant Home Library: Built-Ins and Wainscoting for Timeless Appeal

Moving on, we arrive at another beautifully completed space that speaks to the power of classic design and thoughtful craftsmanship: our home library. This room truly exemplifies how architectural detailing and strategic design can create a sense of grandeur, intellectual purpose, and cozy intimacy. The custom built-in bookshelves, meticulously crafted and fitted from floor to ceiling, provide not just essential storage for our cherished collection of books but also form a stunning visual backdrop. Paired with elegant wainscoting that adds traditional charm and texture, these elements lend a timeless, classic feel to the room, instantly elevating its character and inviting you to linger.

Like any well-designed space, the library truly comes alive with strategic and personal styling. After the structural elements were meticulously in place, I focused on styling the bookshelves with a thoughtful mix of books, decorative objects, cherished personal mementos, and carefully chosen artwork. This careful curation adds warmth, personality, and that desirable “pop of color” that transforms a purely functional space into an inviting sanctuary for reading, quiet contemplation, or engaging conversation. It’s a room that beckons you to settle in and stay a while, proving unequivocally that a home library can be both eminently practical and profoundly beautiful, a true reflection of the homeowner’s passions.

The Unfinished Symphony: Ongoing Projects and Future Visions

While I love sharing the completed spaces and the satisfaction they bring, it’s just as important to acknowledge and embrace the authentic reality of a DIY home: it’s a continuous journey, not a static destination. Many areas of our home are still vibrant works in progress, bustling with activity, creative energy, and immense future potential. My workshop, for instance, is a crucial hub for all my creative endeavors and the birthplace of countless projects. While it’s certainly not “empty” – in fact, it’s currently in a glorious state of organized (or sometimes less organized, but always productive) chaos – it’s such a hive of activity that taking pristine new pictures often proves challenging. It’s truly the engine room behind all the transformations you see, and its evolving state is a testament to constant creation!

Indeed, a significant portion of the house is currently a dynamic, vibrant “wreck,” filled with the tools, materials, and potential of future beauty. But amidst this delightful mess, exciting and highly anticipated projects are rapidly taking shape. I’m currently deeply immersed in my Laundry Room renovation, a hardworking space I’m determined to make as supremely functional as it is beautiful. This project features some truly innovative, custom storage solutions that I’m incredibly thrilled about, all meticulously designed to maximize efficiency and elevate the aesthetics in this often-overlooked area.

These are more than just cosmetic upgrades; they involve carefully planned and executed custom features, such as a clever, space-saving drying rack and a spacious, pantry-style pull-out cabinet that revolutionizes storage. You can follow the detailed construction process for this essential pull-out cabinet tutorial on my blog, where I share step-by-step instructions so you can create similar, highly practical solutions in your own home, empowering you to tackle your own renovation challenges.

Simultaneously, I’m also tackling the challenging but absolutely essential task of creating a dedicated home office space in the loft. My current “office” setup in the kitchen, while resourceful and a testament to making do, is proving to be less than ideal for consistent focus and long-term productivity. A proper, organized, and inspiring workspace is absolutely critical for my business and creative flow, and I’m incredibly excited about the plans to transform the loft into a highly functional and aesthetically pleasing environment tailored to my working needs.

This home, truly, is still a continuous masterpiece in progress, a testament to the enduring joy of DIY. With four rooms largely “down” – meaning mostly complete and fully functional – we still have about ten more to go before the entire house reaches its final, envisioned state. My heartfelt hope is to see these remaining projects through to completion and finally settle in for a good, long while. My family has a history of moving frequently; in fact, I had just finished remodeling our last house in Illinois, pouring my heart and soul into every detail, only for us to pack up and move again. It’s a bittersweet cycle, but each home offers a new opportunity for fresh creative expression and transformative work.

In closing, if you ever find yourself scrolling through perfectly curated feeds online, feeling as though your own home is somehow “inadequately decorated” or perpetually “unfinished” in comparison to all the immaculate beauty shots, please remember this candid tour. Just come back and visit the Sawdust Girl again. Take a real look around my authentically lived-in, actively renovating home, and I promise, you’ll feel a whole lot better! It’s a comforting reminder that real homes are dynamic, evolving spaces, constantly being shaped and nurtured, and perfectly imperfect in their own unique way. Your home’s journey is a beautiful one, filled with character, continuous progress, and the unique story of your life, crafted with your own hands and heart. Thank you for joining me on this journey!
