Tear Out Day Kitchen Entry Makeover Day One

If you’ve been following my journey on Instagram or Facebook, you’ll know that my latest adventure took an unexpected turn into a full-scale kitchen entry makeover. What began as a simple, one-day project – a brief detour from my studio renovation – quickly blossomed into a multi-week saga, a classic case of DIY scope creep. Every dedicated DIYer understands that feeling when a seemingly small task unveils layers of unforeseen challenges, transforming a quick fix into a comprehensive overhaul. My initial intention was straightforward: tackle this little entryway in a single day. Believe me, I was serious! However, as is often the case with home improvement projects, once you start pulling at one thread, the whole tapestry begins to unravel, revealing opportunities for greater transformation. This particular journey kicked off with a firm decision to dismantle the existing bench, an element I had previously constructed but which had ceased to serve its intended purpose.

For those new to my renovation story, let’s rewind a bit to the genesis of this space. Do you recall the significant kitchen entrance I painstakingly integrated during the larger kitchen build? This unassuming “mudroom” area was originally quite different. It began as a simple doorway connecting to the dining room, accompanied by a window offering a view towards the driveway. Through careful planning and a bit of structural re-imagining, I sealed off the old dining room doorway, creating a more cohesive and functional kitchen layout. Simultaneously, I made a pivotal change by replacing the existing window with a door, granting us direct access to the outside. This transformation was aimed at enhancing both the flow and utility of our home, laying the groundwork for what I hoped would be a perfect mudroom solution.

Following these initial structural changes, my attention turned to furnishing this newly created entryway. That’s when I designed and built the bench area. This was intended to be our household’s primary “drop zone” – a convenient spot for keys, mail, and, crucially, a dedicated space for all our dog supplies. Before embarking on its construction, I held a family consultation. I was genuinely conflicted at the time, weighing the pros and cons of installing a bench versus a standard kitchen-height cabinet. The family consensus leaned heavily towards the bench, primarily for its perceived utility as a place to sit while putting on shoes and, more importantly, attaching leashes to our eager canine companions before walks. We envisioned a bustling, functional space, a perfect prelude to every outing.

However, reality often diverges from initial aspirations. Despite our well-intentioned family decision, the bench, regrettably, fell short of its grand purpose. This is what it looked like 99% of the time: a perpetually cluttered surface. The irony is, it has been used for “sitting on” precisely zero times. What was meant to be a practical seating area quickly devolved into an auxiliary storage unit for anything and everything. The convenience we had anticipated never materialized. Instead, the bench became a magnet for miscellaneous items, fundamentally failing its primary design objective. This wasn’t just an aesthetic issue; it highlighted a significant functional oversight in our home’s busiest thoroughfare. The constant visual reminder of its underperformance became a source of growing frustration.

One of the persistent challenges was finding a suitable spot for our dog food. I’m adamant about not storing pet supplies in the main pantry, which led to the large bag of dog food perpetually occupying a corner of the bench. This created an unsightly and unhygienic eyesore. Adding to the clutter was our recycling. Despite having built an ingenious recycling sorter for the side porch, we, as a family, proved to be “too lazy” to walk the extra five feet to deposit items properly. Consequently, the entryway bench became an interim, unofficial recycling depot, further contributing to the chaotic appearance of the space. This combination of dog food and recycling rendered the bench utterly useless for its intended purpose, transforming a potential asset into a glaring organizational liability. It became clear that a fundamental change was necessary to reclaim the functionality and aesthetics of this vital entry point.

Speaking of the side porch, that’s an entirely different beast of a project, complete with its own unique set of perplexing problems and challenges. But that, my friends, is a story for another day, a saga I promise to delve into later!

But let’s refocus our attention back to the problematic bench. The sight of the perpetual mess finally got the better of me. My patience wore thin, and I declared it was time for action. My resolution was firm: I would dedicate just one day to a swift kitchen entry makeover. The plan was deceptively simple: meticulously remove the existing bench and replace it with a more practical, enclosed cabinet. “Easy peasy,” I thought, underestimating, as many DIYers often do, the inevitable complexities lurking beneath the surface of any renovation project. This initial burst of optimism fueled my immediate next step: thoroughly clearing out every single item from the entryway. This vital preparatory stage, often overlooked, allowed me to gain a clear perspective of the space, revealing its true dimensions and potential, and mentally prepare for the demolition that lay ahead.

Kitchen Entry Makeover: Demolition Day Unleashed

And so began the much-anticipated #DemoDay! The first order of business was to systematically dismantle the existing structures. My trusty Trim Puller proved to be an indispensable tool throughout this phase. Its unique design allowed me to remove trim pieces without causing extensive damage to the walls, a crucial consideration for maintaining the integrity of the surrounding structure and minimizing repair work down the line. The demolition process commenced with the removal of the decorative board adorned with cute, doggy-themed hooks. These “hooks” were, in fact, drawer pulls that I had ingeniously, or perhaps misguidedly, repurposed. While the aesthetic was charming, their functionality as hooks was severely flawed, leading to one of the project’s early frustrations.

It turns out that using drawer pulls as permanent wall hooks, especially on a board securely fastened to the wall, is a design flaw I would not recommend. The fundamental problem lies in their installation method: you screw them in from the *back* of the board. This means that if, or rather when, one inevitably loosens or falls off due to repeated use, you simply cannot access the back of the board to re-secure it. This seemingly minor design oversight became a perpetual source of annoyance, contributing to the overall sense of disarray in the entryway. This inherent design flaw was, in fact, yet another compelling reason why I felt such an urgent need to dive into this comprehensive kitchen entry makeover. It was a constant reminder that sometimes, even clever repurposing can lead to long-term headaches, and a proper, purpose-built solution was desperately needed to restore order and functionality.

With the troublesome hook board removed, the next step involved addressing the flooring planks. To facilitate the much easier and cleaner removal of the bulky bench, I carefully pulled up a few rows of these planks. My strategic decision was to remove them up to the precise height where the new cabinet structure would eventually sit. This foresight ensures a seamless transition and a solid foundation for the upcoming build. This step wasn’t merely about creating space; it was about preventing potential damage to the existing flooring during the bench extraction and preparing a perfectly level surface for the new installation. Taking the time to properly prep the surrounding areas during demolition is critical for a smooth construction phase, saving time and effort in the long run.

One of the unexpected hurdles that emerged during this demolition phase was the door trim. In a sequence of installation that now seemed less than ideal, I had actually installed the door trim *after* constructing and positioning the bench. This meant that the trim was effectively trapping the bench in place, preventing its easy removal. To extract the bench without causing significant damage to either the trim or the surrounding wall, it became absolutely necessary to carefully pull off the door trim first. This added an unforeseen layer of complexity and time to my “one-day” project. It was a valuable lesson in the importance of planning the order of operations in DIY projects, reminding me that sometimes, decisions made earlier can have a cascading effect later down the line, necessitating additional work to rectify.

Adding to the growing list of impediments, the bottom door hinge also presented itself as an obstacle. Its positioning meant that the bench couldn’t simply slide out, further complicating what I had envisioned as a straightforward removal process. Consequently, I had to carefully detach the bottom door hinge as well. This meant temporarily destabilizing the door and adding yet another task to the demolition checklist. Each of these small, unforeseen detours – the door trim, the hinge, the planks – chipped away at my initial “one-day” optimism, revealing the true nature of ambitious DIY projects. However, each challenge also brought me closer to a completely cleared space, ready for its transformation. It reinforced the notion that patience and adaptability are paramount in any home renovation endeavor, especially when you’re tackling it yourself.

After navigating through these various minor but time-consuming obstacles – the pesky hooks, the carefully removed planks, the door trim, and the obstructing hinge – the moment of truth finally arrived. With a combination of strategic leverage and a good deal of effort, I managed to pull the “friggin’ bench” out! It was a satisfying, albeit slightly strenuous, accomplishment. The removal of such a large, built-in piece immediately opened up the space, providing a refreshing sense of emptiness and possibility. The physical act of dismantling and removing the bench was more than just a task; it was a tangible step towards rectifying a functional flaw and creating a canvas for a much-needed improvement. Seeing the cleared wall and floor, free from the clutter and underperformance of the old bench, brought a renewed surge of energy and excitement for the next phase of the makeover.

While the upper structure of the bench was completely removed, I made a conscious decision to leave the sturdy base in place. This foundational element, which was securely anchored, will serve as an excellent starting point and a solid foundation for the new cabinet I’m planning to construct. Reusing the existing base not only saves time and effort during the construction phase but also ensures structural stability and continuity with the existing framework of the entryway. This decision embodies the essence of smart DIY: identifying what can be salvaged and repurposed to streamline the project while maintaining quality. It’s a testament to efficiency and resourcefulness, allowing me to focus my energies on the more intricate details of building the new custom storage solution that this entryway desperately needs.

In a conscious effort to minimize waste and maximize efficiency, I aimed to salvage as much of the existing plywood from the dismantled bench as possible. With this goal in mind, I did my absolute best to disassemble the bench as gently and carefully as I could. The intention was to reuse these materials, reducing both cost and environmental impact for the upcoming cabinet build. However, the demolition process highlighted the impressive strength of modern woodworking adhesives. The wood glue I had used when originally constructing the bench had truly done its job – perhaps a little too well! It formed an incredibly strong bond, making disassembly a challenging and sometimes destructive task. Despite my best efforts to pry pieces apart delicately, some damage to the plywood was unavoidable due to the tenacious grip of the glue. This serves as a testament to the durability of a well-glued joint, but also a cautionary tale when future disassembly might be a consideration.

Despite the challenges posed by the incredibly strong wood glue, I’m pleased to report that I was ultimately able to salvage the top and bottom pieces of the old bench. While some damage inevitably occurred during the disassembly process, thanks to the robust adhesion of the glue, I have a clever solution. I’ll simply flip these pieces over and utilize their undamaged, pristine sides to construct the new cabinet. This resourceful approach not only minimizes waste but also allows me to repurpose materials effectively, keeping the project cost-efficient. It’s all about adapting and finding creative solutions when faced with unexpected bumps in a DIY journey. The old bench’s components will find new life, contributing to a more functional and aesthetically pleasing entryway that truly meets our family’s needs for efficient storage and organization, without the clutter.
