Embarking on a shower tiling project is an exciting endeavor that transforms a functional space into a personal sanctuary. After successfully completing the foundational steps of shower pan installation and ensuring robust waterproof shower wall board setup, the moment arrives to add the aesthetic layer – the tiles. While initially anticipating a swift one or two-day task, the reality of meticulous craftsmanship, especially with numerous design elements, often extends the timeline. In our case, the sheer volume of integrated niches added a delightful challenge, promising unparalleled storage for everything from shampoo bottles to razors, finally clearing the shower floor of clutter. The journey of tiling, while demanding, culminates in a stunning, highly functional shower space that significantly elevates any bathroom’s appeal.
The Art of Shower Tiling: A Step-by-Step Guide
Beginning the tiling process correctly is paramount for a professional finish. One of the most critical initial steps is establishing a perfectly level ledger line. Given that shower floors are intentionally sloped for efficient drainage, starting your tile layout directly from the floor edge would result in an uneven, unsightly appearance. To counteract this, I utilized my trusted laser level to project a precise horizontal line one tile width above the lowest point of the shower floor. This line served as my unyielding reference point, guaranteeing a level start for all subsequent rows of tile. For larger projects, a sturdy piece of scrap wood can be temporarily screwed to the wall along this line to provide a resting ledge for your first row of tiles. However, for smaller areas like ours, strategically propping tiles on scrap pieces of tile proved sufficient. This technique ensures that once the main tiling is complete and dry, you can accurately measure and cut the bottom row to perfectly fit the unique slope of your shower pan, creating a seamless and visually appealing transition.

Selecting the Right Tiles and Mastering Mortar Application
For this shower renovation, I opted for a modern and expansive large format subway tile, measuring 6″ x 18″. While visually striking, working with larger tiles can present challenges, particularly in maintaining perfectly flush edges and preventing what is known as “lippage” – where one tile edge is higher than an adjacent one. To combat this common issue and ensure a pristine, smooth surface, I decided to incorporate leveling spacers. These innovative tools are designed to hold tiles firmly in place, ensuring they are perfectly aligned and level with each other as the mortar cures.

Proper mortar application is another critical factor in achieving durable and professional results. I began by spreading a consistent layer of thin-set mortar onto a manageable section of the wall. With large format tiles, it’s also essential to “back-butter” each tile. This involves applying a thin layer of mortar to the back of the tile itself before pressing it onto the wall. This dual application technique ensures maximum coverage and adhesion, preventing hollow spots behind the tiles that could lead to cracking or loosening over time. As the leveling spacers slightly pull the tile away from the wall to create space for the leveling mechanism, back-buttering becomes even more crucial for ensuring full contact and a robust bond.
The Mechanics of Leveling Spacers and Cleanup Considerations
The leveling spacer system consists of a white T-shaped base, which is inserted under the tile edges, with a portion protruding upwards between the tiles to define the grout line. Once a section of tiles is set and the white bases are in place, the leveling wedges (black triangular pieces) are inserted into these bases. A specialized tool is then used to push these wedges through to a preset depth, effectively pulling the tile edges together and ensuring they sit perfectly flat and flush. This ingenious system is a game-changer for achieving professional-grade flatness and consistent grout lines, particularly beneficial for expansive tile layouts or when working with tiles that might otherwise be prone to lippage.

However, an inevitable consequence of using leveling spacers, especially when first learning the technique, is that excess thin-set mortar tends to squish up through the grout lines. In traditional tiling, it’s common practice to clean these lines immediately after setting the tiles, using a utility knife or a specialized grout clean-out tool before placing standard spacers. With leveling spacers, however, it’s difficult to thoroughly clean the excess mortar until the spacers are removed, which can only happen once the mortar has fully dried. This means some of the mortar can dry within the grout lines, making cleanup significantly more time-consuming and labor-intensive. Through practice, one certainly develops a better sense of how much mortar to apply to minimize squeeze-out. While there were sections where excessive mortar cleanup was unavoidable despite my best efforts, the trade-off was a perfectly flat and evenly spaced tile surface – a result well worth the extra effort. For very large format tiles, I unequivocally recommend leveling spacers for their superior results. For tiles of this size and smaller, however, conventional spacers might offer a faster and simpler installation experience, depending on your comfort level and desired level of perfection. Ultimately, the choice depends on balancing precision with project efficiency.

Adding Architectural Interest: Decorative Borders and Challenging Niches
Beyond the functional aspects, incorporating decorative elements can dramatically enhance the shower’s aesthetic appeal. Once I had tiled approximately two-thirds of the wall with the main field tile, I introduced a row of elegant pencil liner tile. This slender, refined trim created a sophisticated visual break, effectively separating the expansive field tile and adding a touch of custom design. Following this, I installed a row of distinct decorative tile, which became a focal point. Another row of pencil liner tiles was then placed to frame this decorative band, after which I continued with the large subway tiles all the way to the ceiling. This layered approach adds depth and character, transforming a simple tiled wall into a curated design statement.

Undoubtedly, the most intricate and time-consuming aspect of this project was tiling the multiple shower niches. While they offer unparalleled storage and functionality, the precision cutting and fitting required for each small surface can test even the most patient tiler. It was a true “chore,” and I vowed to be more judicious with the number of niches in future projects! To achieve a cohesive look, I carefully cut down pieces of the decorative tile to fit the back panels of each niche, creating a subtle accent. For the sides and top/bottom of these recessed boxes, I meticulously cut pieces of the field tile, ensuring snug fits and tight seams. The goal was not just functionality but also to integrate them seamlessly into the overall tile pattern.

Once the interior of the niches was tiled, the next step involved continuing the subway tile pattern across the wall directly in front of and surrounding each niche. This required precise cuts to leave a uniform reveal – a consistent border of exposed wall around each niche opening – which would later be covered by trim. While I strived for absolute uniformity, after what felt like an eternity of precise cutting and setting, my pursuit of “perfection” slightly waned. The cumulative effort of countless cuts and adjustments meant that minor, almost imperceptible variations became acceptable in the grand scheme of a beautifully tiled shower.

The Precision of Trim and Doorway Tiling
At this point, the intricate detailing of the niches and the sheer scale of the tiling project required a fresh pair of eyes and hands. My amazing helper, Julie, stepped in to tackle the demanding task of installing the niche trim. This crucial step involves meticulously cutting bullnose trim tile to frame each niche opening. The challenge lies in ensuring these trim pieces fit perfectly flush with the tiles on two different planes (the wall and the inside of the niche) and, perhaps most dauntingly, meet at crisp, aesthetically pleasing mitered corners. To achieve a strong bond and allow for subtle adjustments, we mixed the thin-set mortar to a thicker consistency, applying generous “blobs” to the back of each trim piece.

Each piece of trim was carefully installed on all four sides of the niche, followed by a period of delicate adjustment, tweaking, and “zhuzhing” until every corner and edge aligned as perfectly as possible. The temptation to continuously fuss with the trim pieces is strong, but knowing when to step away is a valuable lesson. After carefully cleaning any displaced mortar from the grout lines, we left the trim to cure, confident that the minor imperfections would largely disappear once the grout was applied – unless, of course, you inspect them with a magnifying glass!

Indeed, once grouted, the overall appearance of the niches became incredibly refined, with any minuscule irregularities seamlessly blending into the finished surface. This is the magic of grout: it unites disparate elements and creates a cohesive, polished look that elevates the entire installation.

The shower threshold and doorway presented their own set of unique challenges. My initial vision for the threshold was to avoid grout lines, creating a seamless, monolithic look. I attempted to achieve this by cutting one of the decorative tile pieces to perfectly fit the threshold. For the doorway, I started installing the only bullnose tile I could find that was suitable. However, sometimes material limitations dictate design, and in this instance, the limited sizes available for the bullnose tile meant the “material became the boss of the design.” And as anyone undertaking a DIY project knows, I prefer to be the boss of my own design! The initial attempt looked patchy and disjointed, failing to meet my aesthetic standards, so I made the executive decision to remove it.

For the second attempt, I opted for a more cohesive and visually impactful approach. I installed the large format subway tile vertically around the entire perimeter of the doorway. This required meticulous attention to detail, ensuring each tile was perfectly plumb and level, and crucially, within the precise clearance tolerance required for the upcoming frameless glass shower door. The pressure associated with tiling a doorway that will house a custom-fit frameless glass door cannot be overstated; even slight inaccuracies in the tiling can compromise the installation of the glass, leading to costly adjustments or re-tiling. Every measurement and placement had to be absolutely spot on.

The visual transformation was immediate and significant. The vertical orientation of the large tiles created a much more elegant and unified look for the doorway, aligning perfectly with the contemporary aesthetic of the shower. This decision proved to be far superior to the initial attempt, demonstrating the importance of adapting and refining your approach when faced with design constraints or unsatisfactory results.

Despite careful planning, slight inconsistencies can still arise. The top of the doorway, for instance, didn’t end up being perfectly level across its entire span. To rectify this minor deviation without removing tiles, we strategically built up the mortar beneath the tiles on one side, gradually bringing them to the desired level. To hold these adjusted tiles securely in place while the mortar cured, painter’s tape proved to be an invaluable temporary support, ensuring they wouldn’t slip or shift before setting.

The Grand Finale: Grouting and Sealing
With all the tiles meticulously set and the mortar allowed to cure for at least 24 hours, the next phase, grouting, marked the home stretch of this intensive shower renovation. The first step was to carefully remove all the leveling spacers and meticulously clean off any remaining excess mortar from the grout lines. This pre-grout cleanup is essential for ensuring the grout has a clean surface to adhere to and for achieving crisp, uniform lines. Once the tiles were prepped, it was time to unleash the grout. The process of grouting is often described as a repetitive cycle: spread grout, wipe, spread, wipe, wipe, wipe. It’s a surprisingly good arm workout, requiring sustained effort and attention to detail to push the grout deep into the joints and then remove all haze from the tile surface. I cleverly convinced Julie to take on this messy yet crucial job, and she tackled it with remarkable efficiency and a great sense of humor!
Her dedication truly shines through in the finished product.
After the grout was applied, we allowed it to cure for a full 24 hours. The numerous stages of this bathroom renovation, involving multiple applications of mortar and grout, taught us patience, as each material required its designated curing time. Fortunately, with several other ongoing projects, there was always something productive to do while waiting! Once fully cured, the final vital step was to seal the grout. We chose 511 Seal and Enhance impregnating sealer, a premium product known for both protecting grout from stains and enhancing its color. Sealing the grout is essential for preventing moisture penetration, staining, and mildew growth, ensuring the longevity and pristine appearance of the tiled shower.
And with that, the tiling phase of our shower renovation was triumphantly complete! The transformation from bare walls to a beautifully tiled, highly functional, and aesthetically pleasing shower space was immense. The meticulous effort, the challenges overcome, and the commitment to detail culminated in a truly stunning result.

Now, with the tiling perfected, the anticipation builds for the installation of the fixtures and, most excitingly, that elegant frameless glass door. These final touches will truly bring the shower to life, completing its transformation into a luxurious and functional centerpiece of the bathroom. Cross your fingers for us – perhaps we’ll have those installed and ready to share by next week, marking the absolute completion of this incredible journey!
