April 27th: Laying the Foundation – Priming and Initial Assembly

Today marked a significant milestone in our custom office built-in project, kicking off with tremendous energy and purpose. Our morning began by meticulously preparing the workspace, covering the floor to protect it from paint splatters and sawdust, a crucial step often overlooked in the excitement of building. With the area secured, we moved onto the vital task of priming all the cabinet bases. Priming is more than just an intermediary step; it’s the cornerstone of a durable, professional finish. It ensures superior paint adhesion, blocks stains, and provides a uniform surface, allowing the final coats of paint to look flawless and last for years.

The priming process, while smooth, proved to be quite the workout for my arm! It’s surprising how quickly repetitive motions like brushing or rolling can lead to fatigue, but the satisfaction of seeing each cabinet base transformed with a consistent, preparatory coat made every stroke worthwhile. I must confess, after initially being apprehensive about using some of the larger power tools in earlier stages, I found myself longing for the efficiency they bring. While priming is absolutely essential, it lacks the immediate gratification of seeing raw wood transform into a tangible structure. However, every step, no matter how repetitive, contributes to the overall quality and longevity of these custom built-ins.

Once the first coat of primer was meticulously applied to all cabinet bases, a well-deserved break was in order. There’s nothing quite like a refreshing dip in the pool to reset both body and mind after a morning of intense physical work. It’s a perfect reminder of the balance needed when tackling ambitious DIY projects – hard work, followed by adequate rest and recovery. This brief respite provided the energy boost needed for the next phase of our ambitious home office renovation.

The waiting game commenced shortly after – “Tick Tock, tick tock, tick tock…” Watching paint dry is proverbially tedious, but it’s a critical waiting period to ensure proper curing before proceeding. Rushing this step can compromise the final finish, leading to imperfections or poor adhesion. This downtime, however, also offered an opportunity to plan the next steps, mentally preparing for the intricate assembly work ahead. Patience truly is a virtue in woodworking, and every moment contributes to a superior outcome.

Once the primer was thoroughly dry, confirmed by a quick touch test, it was time for a wardrobe change back into my work clothes and a renewed focus. The next task was to precisely screw the cabinet bases together. This step is crucial for establishing the overall structure and ensuring accurate measurements for the subsequent face frames. Achieving perfect flushness and level required the combined efforts of both my husband and me. His extra set of hands and keen eye for detail were invaluable, making what could have been a frustrating task much smoother and more enjoyable. Teamwork truly makes the dream work when it comes to intricate DIY projects like these custom office built-ins. We meticulously aligned each section, making sure every seam was tight and every surface perfectly level, which is paramount for the professional look and structural integrity of the finished unit.

Attaching custom office cabinet bases together for built-in installation

With the cabinet bases securely joined, I moved on to a smaller yet equally important detail: drilling the holes for the adjustable shelf pins. For this, I employed my trusty Kreg Shelf Pin Jig, paired with a block of MDF for support. This jig makes the process incredibly simple and precise, ensuring perfectly spaced and aligned holes every time. Since these particular bottom bases only required about three holes each, it was a quick and effortless job. Adjustable shelving is a fantastic feature for any custom cabinetry, offering flexibility for varied storage needs, from books to office supplies, allowing for a truly personalized and organized workspace.

As you can probably tell from the lighting, dusk had settled, and the day was drawing to a close. Connecting the bases had indeed taken longer than anticipated, a common occurrence in detailed woodworking where precision dictates pace. However, I was absolutely determined to power through the “to-do” list assigned by Sandra, our unofficial project manager and inspiration. So, I pressed on to tackle the face frames. These frames are critical for the aesthetics and structural rigidity of the cabinets, giving them a finished, built-in look. Utilizing the Kreg Jig once more, I drilled precise pocket holes into the face frame material, preparing them for assembly. The Kreg Jig is an indispensable tool for strong, hidden joinery, perfect for creating clean lines on custom cabinetry.

While I didn’t manage to complete all the face frames as ambitiously planned, I did successfully assemble and attach one face frame, a significant step forward. Another frame is already cut and prepped, awaiting assembly, and the next task will be to precisely cut the material for the middle section’s face frame. Each completed component brings us closer to the vision of a fully functional and beautifully integrated home office.

May 2nd: Crafting the Cabinet Face Frames – Precision and Progress

The past couple of days have been incredibly productive, primarily focused on the intricate task of building and attaching all three face frames for our three sets of cabinet bases. This step is where the cabinets truly begin to take on their final form, transitioning from mere boxes to elegant furniture pieces. The face frames not only add a refined aesthetic but also provide crucial structural integrity, creating a strong, durable front for the custom built-ins. Each frame was carefully constructed using the Kreg Jig, ensuring strong, hidden joints that contribute to a seamless appearance.

Although I haven’t quite caught up with my ambitious to-do list, I’m very close, feeling a strong sense of accomplishment with each completed frame. My husband, ever the supportive partner, graciously took on the task of filling the nail holes in the face frames with wood filler. This attention to detail is paramount for achieving a perfectly smooth, professional finish before painting. Now, my next mission is to find the time to get these newly attached and filled face frames primed before the weekend arrives, ensuring they’re ready for their final coats of paint.

May 3rd: The First Coat of Paint and the Art of Sanding

Today was all about finishing touches and preparation for the final paint job. The face frames, now smooth and seamlessly integrated, received their first coat of paint. This initial layer is vital for sealing the wood filler and providing a consistent base for subsequent coats. Following this, we meticulously sanded down all the cabinet surfaces. Sanding is an often-underestimated step, but it’s critical for achieving a glass-smooth finish. It removes any minor imperfections, raised grain, and ensures optimal adhesion for the next layer of paint. Unfortunately, in the flurry of activity, I forgot to snap a picture to document this crucial stage. Rest assured, though, the sanding and initial painting were thoroughly completed, setting the stage for a truly professional outcome for our custom office built-ins.

May 4th: Balancing Life and Lumber – Kicking Off Cabinet Leg Construction

Today presented a classic dilemma: the call of home improvement versus family commitments. Let’s be honest, we didn’t just have “family commitments”; we embraced the wild, crazy fun of an amusement park day! While “family commitment” sounds much more like something we “had” to do, the reality was pure, unadulterated enjoyment. Sometimes, you just need to step away from the sawdust and immerse yourself in joy. However, due to our very important, fun-filled commitment, we didn’t get started on our building project until 4 in the afternoon. Despite the late start, our assignment for the weekend was clear: construct six sturdy legs for the cabinet bases. Given the limited time, my primary goal for today was simply to get all the necessary pieces cut. This focused approach ensures that we can hit the ground running tomorrow, ready for assembly, and keep our custom office cabinet project moving forward efficiently.

May 5th: Finishing the Legs and Future Dreams – A Glimpse into Our Vision

And just like that, we’re back on track! Today was incredibly productive, as we managed to knock out all six cabinet legs fairly quickly. It’s always a good day when I only have to “bug” (or rather, consult) with Sandra once during the entire process! Building these legs involved precise cuts and secure joinery, ensuring they would provide stable and attractive support for our custom built-ins. After successfully constructing the legs, the next step was to sand them all smooth. Unfortunately, with dinner to make, laundry piling up, and homework to wrangle, I only managed to finish one. The rest will have to wait for me to tackle during the week, or perhaps, the “sanding fairy” – my wonderful husband – will take pity on me and work his magic. Who am I kidding? He’s probably counting down the minutes until I leave for my work trip this week so he can have full control over the project and freely play with all the new tools we’ve been acquiring! It’s a playful dynamic that adds to the joy of our shared DIY adventure.

Newly built wooden legs for custom office cabinets

Here are the newly built legs, strategically placed next to each cabinet base. It might sound utterly crazy to an outsider, but my husband and I often stand there, discussing every detail of the cabinet construction. We talk about how seamlessly everything is coming together, the immense satisfaction of watching our vision materialize, and the excitement for the day when it’s all complete. We eagerly anticipate how these new skills we’ve acquired will transform not just this office, but potentially other areas of our home. These custom built-ins represent more than just furniture; they’re a testament to our teamwork, perseverance, and growing expertise in woodworking.

In those quiet moments, a peaceful silence often settles between us as we both drift into a shared daydream: an organized, fully functioning house, perfectly tailored to our needs, a haven of calm and productivity. Then, as if on cue, a piercing scream from the kiddo shatters the illusion – “Is dinner ready?!” And just like that, we’re jolted back to reality, happily embracing the beautiful chaos and everyday demands that make up our life. It’s a constant balance, but one we wouldn’t trade for anything. This project, much like life itself, is a blend of dreams and daily duties, all leading to a wonderfully built future.
