Complete Home Transformation

Transforming Our Kitchen: A Four-Week Renovation Update

It’s hard to believe that four weeks have flown by since my last kitchen renovation update. The passage of time feels both incredibly fast and excruciatingly slow when you’re deeply immersed in a project of this scale. While progress might not always seem visually dramatic on a day-to-day basis, rest assured, a tremendous amount of work has been happening behind the scenes. This journey to create our dream kitchen is far from over, but every small step brings us closer to the magnificent reveal.

Embarking on a full-scale kitchen renovation is a monumental task, often feeling like a whirlwind of activity where nothing is truly “finished” until the very last touch. This period has been packed with directing various teams, making countless decisions, and observing the meticulous work of others, leaving me feeling as though I’ve worked a full day, every day. It’s an odd sensation when much of that work isn’t directly with tools in hand, but it’s a critical part of the grand orchestration.

Embracing the Vision: Navigating the Renovation Reality

During a major home transformation, there are moments when the space looks more like a chaotic construction site than a future haven. These are the times when “the vision” becomes your most crucial tool. To the untrained eye, our current kitchen might appear far from a masterpiece, but for those who possess “the vision,” it is absolutely incredible right now! This perspective helps us appreciate the potential within the dust and disarray, knowing that each completed task is a foundational step towards something truly spectacular.

It’s vital to reiterate that while I am deeply involved, I am not a solo superhero tackling every single aspect of this ambitious project. My passion and expertise lie in building the custom cabinets – that is my primary contribution. For everything else, I’ve wisely enlisted the help of skilled professionals. This collaborative approach allows me to focus on what I do best while ensuring that all other critical components, from plumbing to electrical, are handled by experts. This partnership is key to turning our grand vision into a stunning reality.

Significant Milestones: Progress Since November 27th

Let’s take a chronological look at the substantial progress made on the kitchen and surrounding areas since my last update on November 27. It’s been a busy and transformative four weeks!

1. New Appliance Arrivals

The first wave of excitement arrived with the delivery of all our new kitchen appliances. These beautiful, state-of-the-art pieces are currently nestled in what feels like a brand new dining room. While technically it’s the old dining room, its newly defined separation from the living room and kitchen creates a distinct, refreshed space. Seeing these essential components waiting patiently reminds us daily of the incredible kitchen that’s rapidly taking shape.

2. DIY Cabinet Building with a Friend

A huge shout-out to my dear friend and client, Kelly, who made a quick but incredibly productive two-day visit. Her assistance was invaluable as we collaborated to construct three crucial main cabinets: the oven cabinet, the cooktop cabinet, and a much-needed broom closet. Building these foundational pieces myself brings an immense sense of satisfaction and customizability, perfectly aligning with the bespoke nature of this kitchen remodel.

3. Enhanced Hallways and Storage Solutions

Beyond the kitchen, significant improvements have transformed the surrounding living areas, enhancing both aesthetics and functionality:

  • Entrance Hallway Planking: The entrance hallway on both sides has been beautifully planked, adding character and warmth. Finally, the doorway leading to the library is receiving its much-anticipated trim work, with our skilled handymen picking up where I left off to ensure a polished finish.
  • Newly planked entrance hallway showcasing detailed trim work around the library doorway.

  • Master Bedroom Hallway Innovations: The generously wide hallway situated behind the kitchen, which leads to the master bedroom, has seen some impactful changes. A new pocket door now seamlessly connects to the laundry room, offering both privacy and efficient space utilization.
  • Wide hallway leading to master bedroom with a new space-saving pocket door installed for the laundry room.

  • Expanded Storage and Barn Door Project: At the opposite end of this hallway, we’ve created a large, brand-new storage closet. This replaces a somewhat empty space previously occupied by a giant armoire, providing significantly more usable and organized storage. This entire wall is slated for planking, and the door to the basement is getting a stylish new barn door, promising a modern rustic touch.

4. The Temporary Kitchen Quandary

The old kitchen cabinets have been completely removed, with half now in the basement and the other half in what used to be our “second dining room.” This area was optimistically set up as a temporary kitchen, a valiant attempt to maintain some semblance of normal home cooking. We even arranged dishes, salt, pepper, and other essentials. However, the reality of living amidst a full-blown construction zone has meant that we’ve mostly been eating out every single night. While delicious, it’s certainly adding up, and our temporary kitchen setup often feels like a wasted effort. Such is life during a major remodel!

The Heart of the Home: Actual Kitchen Progress Unveiled

Of course, you’re eager to see the actual kitchen progress! We’ve made substantial headway in the main kitchen area itself. The new flooring is completely installed, laying a beautiful foundation for the space. Most of the intricate box beam ceiling is also in place, adding architectural interest and a sense of grandeur. A couple more of the custom cabinets are now in position, further defining the layout and functionality of the room.

Reconfiguring an entire kitchen from the ground up requires intricate coordination. We’ve had a bustling crew on site, including plumbers, HVAC technicians, electricians, and three dedicated handymen, often with six people working simultaneously last week, not counting myself. It’s been incredible to witness their efficient dance around each other, ensuring that every trade seamlessly contributes to the overall progress without ever getting in the way. This level of teamwork is truly inspiring and essential for keeping the project on track.

A Touch of Holiday Spirit Amidst the Chaos

Amidst all the construction dust and organized chaos, we managed to inject a little holiday cheer this past weekend. Madison, my daughter, expressed that this Christmas was feeling a bit depressing without any decorations, movie nights, or game nights. So, we prioritized putting up the Christmas tree! I’m sure our electrician will be especially thrilled about navigating behind it to finish up the work in that closet. Laughter and small moments of normalcy are incredibly important during such an intense period!

Looking Ahead: Immediate Goals and Long-Term Vision

With just a week until Christmas, our “staycation” next week promises to be packed with exciting progress. My primary goal is to have the main kitchen wall completed by Friday. This means not necessarily the tile or cabinet doors, but crucially, getting all the major appliances installed and the primary lighting fixtures in place. The sink might still reside in the laundry room for a little longer, and that’s perfectly acceptable for now. The focus is on functionality and getting closer to a usable kitchen space. We’re truly happy with how everything is coming together, constantly reminding ourselves of the renovation adage: “It’s going to look like crap until it’s 98% done, and then all of a sudden — Bam! — it’s awesome!” We are definitely getting there!

Navigating Personal Hurdles and Project Management

I’m incredibly grateful not to be tackling this entire project alone, especially after an unexpected setback this past Saturday. I irritated my sciatica, bringing me back to square one (reminiscent of when I sneezed at the salon back in March!). I’m currently on day two of a twelve-day steroid pack and taking Vicodin, so the pain isn’t unbearable, but an MRI on Monday will help us understand the full extent of what’s going on. It’s frustrating because it seems I simply got out of the car incorrectly – such a silly cause for such a painful issue! However, this minor setback won’t halt the kitchen remodel. I’ll simply oversee the construction more closely, working with someone else to handle the heavy lifting while I, in the nicest way possible, direct the show. Rest assured, I am prioritizing self-care throughout this process. Everything is going to be just fine, and very soon, it will be even better.

Living in a House of Transformation: The Current Reality

This update gives you a glimpse into why I’ve been a bit absent lately. This project demands every ounce of my physical and mental energy as I strive to complete it as quickly as possible while ensuring every detail aligns perfectly with my vision. It’s an insane period for our household; our entire home is quite literally torn apart. The upstairs rooms are currently serving as temporary storage for ‘junk’ that needed to be cleared from the lower two levels. The basement ceiling is three-quarters removed, with everything crammed into the remaining quarter. To put it into perspective, a staggering nine out of twelve rooms or spaces on the main level are actively under some form of construction. It is truly a chaotic yet exhilarating environment!

I promise to share an abundance of pictures and detailed tutorials with you all after the New Year, showcasing the finished spaces and explaining the processes. Until then, I wish you all a very Merry Christmas! For more real-time updates and behind-the-scenes glimpses, be sure to connect with me on Facebook, where I frequently share progress photos. Peace and festive cheer to you all! <3
