Illinois Home: Pre-Renovation

Embarking on a Home Transformation: Our Illinois House Renovation Journey Begins

Every house holds a story, and sometimes, it’s a story yearning for a dramatic rewrite. After years of moving frequently and transforming numerous spaces, we’ve once again planted roots – this time in Illinois. Our latest adventure isn’t in a shiny new build, but in an older home that, frankly, left us feeling a mix of challenge and opportunity. The initial impression? It needed a lot of love, a complete overhaul, and a vision to make it less, well, “ugly.” This blog marks the beginning of that journey, a documented transformation from dated to dazzling, from drab to dream home. Join us as we peel back the layers of our new Illinois residence and prepare to breathe new life into every corner.

Our family is no stranger to relocation; this is our sixth move in just eleven years. Each time, we’ve found ourselves in a new space, eager to infuse it with our personality. Interestingly, our previous homes were brand new constructions that I eagerly (and perhaps a bit obsessively) tore apart and rebuilt to suit our style. This time, we opted for a different path. We decided to embrace the challenge of an older, ‘ugly’ house, recognizing its inherent character and the immense satisfaction that comes from a comprehensive renovation. After all, I can’t seem to keep my hands off a project, so why not start with a blank canvas that truly demands attention?

Unveiling the Potential: Our Illinois House – Before Photos & Renovation Plan

Embarking on a large-scale home renovation can be daunting, but I’ve found that setting clear goals and maintaining accountability are key to success. This blog will serve as my weekly (or perhaps bi-weekly, depending on the pace of real-life progress) progress report, a commitment to keep moving forward. I believe this structured approach offers several advantages for both myself and hopefully, for you, our readers, seeking inspiration for your own projects.

Firstly, it will undoubtedly help me focus on one project at a time. Anyone who has undertaken a renovation knows how quickly an entire house can devolve into a chaotic construction zone. By committing to regular updates, I aim to maintain some semblance of order and prevent the entire home from becoming a perpetual mess. Secondly, it creates a sense of urgency, much like knowing guests are arriving – a powerful motivator to complete tasks and tidy up. And thirdly, and perhaps most importantly, having to photograph and share my living space with the world will provide an unparalleled incentive to keep things tidy and progress visible. So, without further ado, let’s dive into the ‘before’ photos of our new, previously quite ugly, Illinois house.

The Dining Room: Awaiting Its Grand Transformation

Stepping into the dining room, one is immediately struck by its dated charm, or lack thereof. The existing decor, color palette, and fixtures are a clear nod to a bygone era. It’s a space that currently feels overlooked, yet holds immense potential as the heart of future gatherings and celebrations. We envision transforming this area into an elegant and inviting space where family and friends can share meals and create lasting memories. From outdated wallpaper or paint to uninspired lighting, every element is ready for a modern refresh, while still respecting the architectural integrity of the home. This room will be a testament to how a strategic renovation can completely redefine a space’s purpose and appeal.

The Den: From Drab to Dynamic

The den, a versatile space, currently presents a challenge in its tired state. Often a forgotten room in older homes, it can serve as anything from a quiet reading nook to a lively family room or a productive home office. Our current den showcases the classic signs of an older house – perhaps faded carpets, uninspired wall treatments, and fixtures that have seen better days. The goal here is to unlock its hidden potential, crafting a room that is both highly functional and aesthetically pleasing. We’ll explore design elements that enhance comfort and utility, ensuring it becomes a cherished part of our home, adaptable to our evolving needs.

The Entrance Hallway: Setting the First Impression

The entryway is the first glimpse guests get into your home, and ours is currently a less-than-grand introduction. The photographs show the hallway from both directions, revealing its current state of disrepair or datedness. An older home often comes with unique entry challenges, from worn flooring to inadequate lighting and a general lack of cohesive design. Our aim is to transform this utilitarian space into a welcoming and stylish corridor that sets a positive tone for the entire house. This involves carefully considering flooring options, illuminating the space with updated fixtures, and selecting wall treatments that create an immediate sense of warmth and invitation. The entry, though a thoroughfare, deserves just as much design attention as any other room.

The Powder Room: Small Space, Big Impact

Small but mighty, the powder room is a prime candidate for a dramatic transformation. Often compact, these rooms offer an incredible opportunity to experiment with bold design choices without overwhelming the senses or breaking the bank. Our powder room, in its current ‘before’ state, likely suffers from common issues found in older homes: dated fixtures, uninspired tiling, and a general lack of personality. We plan to inject vibrant life into this space, considering new plumbing fixtures, creative wallpaper, fresh paint, and updated lighting. The goal is to make it a memorable and stylish reflection of the home’s overall aesthetic, proving that even the smallest rooms can make a significant statement.

The Laundry Room: From Chore Zone to Cheerful Space

Ah, the laundry room – often the most overlooked and uninspired space in a home. The original blog post humorously points out the current inconvenience: “Yep, that’s where the dirty stuff goes. Then you have to walk over it to go outside. Great setup right?” This perfectly encapsulates the functional challenges and aesthetic neglect this room currently faces. Our vision for this utility area extends far beyond just washing clothes; we aim to create an efficient, organized, and even cheerful space. This means exploring clever storage solutions, durable and attractive flooring, bright lighting, and possibly even a designated folding area. Transforming the laundry room isn’t just about making a chore easier; it’s about making a frequently used space more pleasant and less of an eyesore.

Hallway to Garage/Laundry/Office: Maximizing Transitional Spaces

The hallway leading to the garage, laundry room, and perhaps an office space, is another area often neglected in home design. These transitional zones can quickly become cluttered and uninviting. The ‘before’ photo of this hallway likely reveals the classic signs of an older home’s utility corridor – perhaps poor lighting, scuffed walls, and a general lack of architectural interest. Our plan is to infuse this hallway with purpose and style. This could involve installing built-in storage, updating lighting to brighten the path, and selecting materials that tie into the broader home aesthetic. Even a hallway can contribute to the overall flow and functionality of a house, making daily routines more enjoyable.

The Kitchen: The Heart of the Home, Reimagined

The kitchen is arguably the most vital room in any home, and ours is undoubtedly ready for a major intervention. The ‘before’ image likely showcases elements common in older kitchens: dated cabinetry, worn countertops, inefficient layouts, and possibly a color scheme that belongs in a different decade. Our objective is to transform this space into a modern, highly functional, and aesthetically pleasing culinary hub. This comprehensive renovation will involve redesigning the layout for optimal flow, selecting new appliances, installing updated cabinetry and countertops, and refreshing the lighting. The goal is to create a kitchen that not only looks beautiful but also serves as an efficient and enjoyable space for cooking, dining, and gathering. This will be one of the most impactful transformations in our Illinois home renovation journey.

The Living Room: Crafting a Comfortable Haven

The living room, often the central gathering spot, is where comfort and style converge. Our current living room, as seen in these ‘before’ photos, likely suffers from common issues in older homes: tired carpet, outdated paint, and perhaps a layout that doesn’t maximize the space’s potential. Our vision is to transform this room into a cozy and inviting haven for relaxation and entertainment. This involves carefully considering new flooring, a fresh paint scheme, updated lighting, and a strategic furniture arrangement. We aim to create a space that feels both elegant and approachable, a true reflection of our family’s lifestyle and a comfortable retreat for everyone. These two images capture different angles of the living room, highlighting the scope of the transformation ahead.

Beyond the Photos: The Overall Aesthetic and Our Vision for this Old House

While these photos provide a glimpse into the primary living spaces, the rest of the house, much of which is captured on video, shares a consistent theme. Picture this: ubiquitous orange-toned wood molding and doors, brass fixtures that have lost their luster, and cheap carpet covering most floors. The only exceptions are the entrance, downstairs hallways, and kitchen, which feature the same pervasive ‘orange-y’ wood. It’s a palette that, while perhaps popular in its time, now screams for a contemporary update.

Despite these cosmetic challenges, what initially drew us to this Illinois house was its layout. I’ve spent years renovating even “brand new” homes, so the idea of tackling an older, genuinely ‘ugly’ house felt like a natural progression. It’s a chance to build character and charm from the ground up, rather than tearing down new features. While I’ve already made some initial progress, there is still an immense amount of work to be done. For instance, the basement project has been stalled for nearly two years. My renovation rhythm tends to be rather inconsistent: four months on, three months off; three months on, six months off – you get the idea. This is precisely why I’m imposing a deadline of sorts, a ‘weekly progress report,’ to maintain momentum and share the highs and lows of this extensive home makeover.

This Illinois house renovation is more than just a series of projects; it’s a journey of transformation, creativity, and perseverance. We are excited to document every step, from the initial demolition to the final decorative touches. Stay tuned as we begin to peel back the layers of dated design and reveal the true potential of this charming older home. We hope you’ll enjoy following along – and perhaps even find some inspiration for your own home improvement endeavors!
