This month, Bosch Tools celebrates the heartwarming journey of families creating lasting memories and strengthening bonds through collaborative building projects. Every family’s definition of “building together” is wonderfully unique, and ours is no exception. A question I frequently encounter is about my husband Wes’s involvement in the myriad of projects constantly underway in our home, and how he truly feels about our shared passion for DIY.
With Father’s Day just around the corner, it feels like the perfect moment to delve into the heartwarming, sometimes hilarious, story of “Our First Family DIY Project.” This pivotal experience not only set us on an incredible home improvement journey but also sculpted the distinctive way my family approaches DIY today. It’s a tale of discovery, compromise, and ultimately, a celebration of how far we’ve come.

The Unexpected Beginning: Our First DIY Adventure in Arizona
Our DIY story truly began when Wes and I settled into our second home in Arizona. Our daughter, Madison, was a curious three-year-old, and my parents were visiting. It’s an unwritten rule in our family that when my parents visit, especially my dad, a project must be underway. He thrives on staying busy and lending his skilled hands. My brother and sister even drove up from California for a few days to join the family gathering – and, implicitly, to contribute to whatever project was inevitably going to unfold.
There was no specific project planned, nor even a vague idea floating around. Yet, everyone knew, with an almost cosmic certainty, that a significant DIY undertaking was on the horizon. This “knowledge” was simply a given. Except for Wes. He remained blissfully unaware.
One morning, as Wes departed for work and Mom took Madison to the park, the grand decision was made: we would tile over the dated laminate countertops in our kitchen. Our youthful optimism led us to believe this monumental task would be completed in a mere couple of hours. Oh, how delightfully naive we were!
The Moment of Truth: Wes’s Introduction to DIY Demolition
A few hours into our ambitious endeavor, the laminate countertops were thoroughly scuffed, the existing backsplash had been swiftly removed with a circular saw (a move that felt incredibly empowering at the time), and we were just beginning to lay tiles over the initial chaos we had created. It was at this precise moment that Wes returned home from work. He walked through the front door, his eyes falling upon the scene of our “progress,” and stared in silent, gaping horror at the monstrous mess that had consumed his kitchen. Without a word, he walked into our bedroom, emerged with an overnight bag, and promptly left. In that unforgettable instant, Wes made two profound discoveries: first, a spontaneous DIY project was indeed happening in his home; and second, he possessed an intense and undeniable dislike for demolition mess!
However, alongside his aversion to the chaos, Wes also discovered a deep appreciation for the finished product that emerged from such a mess. We meticulously worked through the night, laying every tile. When Wes returned home the following day, the grouting was complete, the tools were neatly put away, and the kitchen looked absolutely stunning! The mess was entirely gone, replaced by beautiful, new countertops, and Wes was, to our immense relief, completely happy about the transformation.
Our Evolving DIY Philosophy: Finding Our Rhythm
And so, our family’s unique DIY journey officially began. We were invigorated by the prospect of creating awesome, personalized improvements in our home – projects that would have been financially out of reach if we had to purchase or hire them out. The realization that “we could do it ourselves!” was incredibly empowering. From that day forward, we made a strategic decision: Wes would be permanently excused from demolition duty. In fact, it was decided that it was best if he did not see, hear, or touch demolition with a ten-foot pole! I quickly learned the art of scheduling demolition work for when he was out of town, ensuring every trace of dust and debris was meticulously cleaned up before his return, without ever needing to mention a thing. This unspoken arrangement has consistently proven to be the best approach for our family dynamic.
Our DIY skills continued to grow, and our shared passion for transforming spaces remained strong. When we moved to Illinois, our new house presented us with an unfinished basement – a blank canvas brimming with potential. Overjoyed by the absence of any initial demolition requirements, Wes enthusiastically declared that we could finally begin finishing our basement… together. Of course, I was incredibly grateful for the extra set of hands and his renewed enthusiasm. We eagerly set our sights on the upcoming weekend, gathered our tools, rolled up our sleeves, and got busy. Our first goal? Framing the walls.

Learning What “Building Together” Truly Means for Us
After a few hours of diligent work, Wes and I had constructed a grand total of a four-foot section of wall. A four-foot section, with studs precisely every 16 inches, equates to a total of just four studs! The reason for this slow pace quickly became apparent: Wes’s desire and perceived need to make absolutely everything completely perfect. While admirable, this pursuit of flawless execution proved incredibly frustrating for both of us in the fast-paced, often imperfect world of DIY framing. Through this experience, we made another crucial discovery: hands-on DIY work, particularly the intricate, measurement-heavy kind, wasn’t something he genuinely enjoyed. From that point onward, I have confidently embraced my role as the primary DIYer of this family, and it has honestly worked out pretty great.
Over the years, I’ve learned to deftly accommodate Wes’s natural anxiety about the chaos that inevitably accompanies demolition and the initial stages of tearing things apart. In return, he has learned to place unwavering trust in my vision and ability to transform our house into a beautiful, functional home. Regardless of the winding path we took to reach our current harmonious state, I wouldn’t trade our unique journey for anything in the world. Wes has become an incredibly supportive pillar for all my DIY projects. He is always willing to step in precisely when I need an extra set of hands, and readily lends his strength when I require help lifting, moving, or installing something heavy or awkward. His support extends far beyond physical assistance.

He supports me through every project phase: carefully pulling out my inevitable splinters, gently rubbing my sore muscles after a long day of work, patiently listening when I rant about unexpected setbacks or things gone wrong, and joyfully celebrating with me when a challenging project is finally completed. This, for us, is the true essence of what “building together” looks like – a perfect blend of shared passion, understanding, and unwavering support.

My Experience with the Bosch 18V Combo Kit
I’ve had the pleasure of using these very tools extensively throughout the past week, and I can attest to their exceptional quality and thoughtful design. Both the drill/driver and impact driver fit incredibly comfortably in my grip, offering a perfect balance of lightweight design and powerful performance. What truly impressed me was the significant advancement in battery technology: the included batteries are roughly half the size of those that came with the last Bosch impact driver I purchased just a few years ago. It’s genuinely amazing how incredibly thin and lightweight 18V batteries have become, making these tools even more user-friendly and less fatiguing for extended periods of work.

The compact body of the impact driver, in particular, proved to be an invaluable asset in my recent projects. I was able to effortlessly drive a screw not just at an angle, but perfectly straight into a narrow, eight-inch wide cavity of the lumber cart I built this week! This level of maneuverability and access in tight spaces is a testament to Bosch’s excellent engineering and makes complex tasks surprisingly achievable.

As Father’s Day approaches, this Bosch 2-Tool Combo Kit stands out as an outstanding gift for anyone who loves building, DIYing, or simply needs a reliable set of tools for household tasks.
