Laundry Room Washing Center

This past weekend was a whirlwind of productivity! While Wes and I were busy with our office lighting installation, we also achieved a major milestone in our laundry room: the installation of the custom countertop, sink, and faucet. This was a moment I had eagerly anticipated, especially the countertop, envisioning all the laundry I’d finally be able to fold right there. However, the distinct aroma of the Tung Oil finish is still quite strong, so its full utility will have to wait just a little longer!

Our goal for this laundry room makeover was to blend rustic charm with ultimate functionality, creating a space that not only looked great but also served multiple purposes efficiently. From selecting the raw wood for the countertop to making strategic choices for the sink and faucet, every detail was considered with practicality and longevity in mind. We’re incredibly excited to share the journey of transforming this often-overlooked utility space into a highly efficient and stylish area of our home.

Crafting the Perfect Wood Countertop: A DIY Journey

The centerpiece of our new laundry room is undoubtedly the custom wood countertop, meticulously crafted from 2x stock. The journey to its completion began weeks ago when I first acquired the raw lumber. Understanding the importance of wood acclimation, I brought the stock into the house well in advance. This crucial step allowed the wood to thoroughly dry out and adjust to the interior humidity levels, significantly reducing the risk of warping, cracking, or movement after installation. This preparation is paramount for any successful woodworking project, especially for surfaces exposed to moisture, like a laundry room countertop.

Selecting and Finishing the Wood: The Tung Oil Effect

When it came to the aesthetic, I opted for a layered approach with the finish. I experimented with a blend of different stain colors to achieve a rich, multi-dimensional look that complements the overall rustic-modern theme of our home. This process involved careful application and blending to ensure a consistent yet unique appearance across the entire surface. Once the desired stain was achieved, I sealed and protected the countertop with Tung Oil. Tung oil is celebrated for its natural, durable, and water-resistant properties, making it an excellent choice for a high-traffic, potentially damp environment like a laundry room. It penetrates deeply into the wood fibers, offering superior protection while enhancing the natural grain and luster of the timber. However, a word of caution for those considering Tung oil: it is notoriously pungent! The lingering smell is quite potent, requiring ample ventilation and patience before the space can be fully utilized. Rest assured, I’ll be sharing a comprehensive tutorial on the entire countertop building and finishing process very soon, detailing all the steps and lessons learned.

Innovative Sink and Faucet Placement for Maximum Utility

Every element in our laundry room was chosen and positioned with a specific purpose in mind, especially the sink and faucet. We aimed for a design that was both aesthetically pleasing and incredibly functional, addressing common frustrations found in standard laundry setups.

A Strategic Sink Installation: The “Reveal” Design

My undermount sink installation features a slightly larger reveal than one might typically encounter. This wasn’t an oversight but a deliberate design choice, part of a larger plan to maximize our folding space. My intention is to use this distinctive reveal as a practical ledge to hold the countertop cutout when the sink is not in use. Imagine being able to temporarily cover the sink basin, effectively extending the countertop surface, giving me the entire breadth of the counter to spread out and fold clothes. This ingenious solution ensures that even with a sink, we don’t sacrifice valuable workspace, a critical consideration in a busy laundry room.

The Unobtrusive Faucet: Back Corner Placement and Pullout Functionality

Similarly, the placement of our faucet in the back corner of the sink basin is anything but arbitrary. This strategic positioning ensures that the faucet does not impede the use of the sink for larger items or the aforementioned countertop extension. It keeps the workspace clear and unobstructed, allowing for maximum flexibility. The primary motivation behind needing a sink in the laundry room at all was driven by a rather specific need: dog baths! Therefore, it was imperative that we chose a pullout faucet. This feature is an absolute game-changer, providing the flexibility and reach needed to comfortably wash our furry friend, Brody, without making a colossal mess. The versatility of a pullout sprayer makes cleaning the sink itself, or even rinsing larger items, incredibly simple.

Choosing the Right Materials: Stainless Steel for Durability (and Doggie Baths!)

The choice of material for the laundry room sink required careful consideration. Initially, I was hesitant about stainless steel. My concern was primarily about scratching, as a utility sink is bound to see its fair share of rough use, especially when it doubles as a dog bath. However, after extensive searching, finding a sink that met my exact dimensional requirements and possessed the specific shape I needed for my unique faucet placement proved challenging. Ultimately, the superior durability, hygiene, and timeless appeal of stainless steel won me over. While the concern for scratches remains, I’ve already devised a simple solution: a soft towel placed at the bottom of the sink during Brody’s baths will provide cushioning and protection, mitigating any potential damage. This compromise allowed us to achieve the precise functionality and aesthetic we desired without significant sacrifice.

Brody’s New Spa: Adapting to the Laundry Room Dog Bath

With the sink and faucet finally installed, the moment of truth arrived: introducing Brody to his new custom bath station! We carefully lifted him onto the counter and into the sink for a trial run. To our surprise, he was absolutely terrified! His little face showed pure alarm, a reaction we hadn’t quite anticipated.

The Inaugural Test Drive: A Scared Pup

We’re not entirely sure what spooked him the most. It could have been the novelty of the new environment, the strange height, or perhaps the lingering, strong odor of the Tung Oil still curing on the countertop. It’s plausible it was a combination of both. Whatever the reason, his initial reaction was quite a comical, if slightly disheartening, start to his new grooming routine.

Overcoming the Fear: Training for Future Baths

Despite his initial apprehension, Brody will undoubtedly have to get accustomed to his new bathing spot. This dedicated dog bath station in the laundry room represents a significant improvement in convenience and cleanliness for us. No more wrestling him into the shower or bending awkwardly over a bathtub! We plan to gradually introduce him to the sink, using treats and positive reinforcement to help him associate the space with pleasant experiences. Soon enough, this functional laundry room will truly live up to its multi-purpose design, serving as an efficient hub for laundry, utility tasks, and even Brody’s spa days.
