Calderwood Cottage Renovation: Unveiling the Transformed Back Section
Welcome back to the ongoing saga of Calderwood Cottage! Our journey to breathe new life into this charming, yet challenging, property continues. Following our intensive efforts to install crucial HVAC ductwork, as detailed in Part 2, our focus has now shifted entirely to the back section of the house. This area presented its own unique set of obstacles and, ultimately, exciting opportunities for transformation. Today, we’re thrilled to share the significant progress we’ve made in overhauling this crucial part of the cottage, turning former liabilities into future assets for comfortable and functional living.

Unearthing Unexpected Challenges: The Extent of the Rot
Our initial foray into the back of the house began much like many other renovation projects: addressing a seemingly small issue that quickly revealed a much larger problem. Back in October, during what we playfully refer to as Round 1 of our battle with this cottage, we began by removing some visibly rotted trim from around one of the windows. As seasoned renovators of older homes will know, visible rot is often just the tip of the iceberg. True to form, the damage wasn’t confined to the trim; it extended deep into the structural elements. This meant that what started as a simple repair quickly escalated into a more extensive demolition and rebuild than we had initially budgeted for or planned. It’s a common story in home renovation: one discovery often leads to another, requiring adaptability and a willingness to tackle unforeseen complexities head-on.
The discovery of widespread rot meant we couldn’t just patch things up. The integrity of the entire back section of the house was compromised, necessitating a complete overhaul. This wasn’t merely cosmetic; it was about ensuring the long-term structural soundness and weatherproofing of Calderwood Cottage. While certainly a daunting prospect at first, we’ve learned to view these unexpected challenges as chances to not just repair, but to fundamentally improve. Every layer we peeled back, every damaged piece of wood we removed, presented an opportunity to redesign and enhance the home’s functionality and aesthetic appeal. Dealing with the entire backside of the house meant we had to tackle everything from the framing to the exterior envelope, turning a necessary repair into a comprehensive renovation project.

Rethinking the Entrance: Functionality Meets Comfort
One of the most impactful changes we made to the back of the house involved a strategic reconfiguration of the entrance wall. The original layout felt inefficient and lacked practical features. We decided to entirely reframe this wall, strategically moving the main entrance door over and the wall itself back a few feet. This seemingly simple adjustment yielded a multitude of benefits, immediately enhancing both the exterior charm and the interior functionality of the cottage.
On the exterior, the relocation allowed us to design and incorporate a small, welcoming roof shelter directly above the door. It’s a minor detail that makes a world of difference, especially during inclement weather. Having a cozy, dry spot to stand under while fumbling with keys or greeting guests is always a nice touch, adding a practical layer of comfort and curb appeal to the cottage’s rear façade. This small architectural detail contributes significantly to the overall welcoming atmosphere we envision for Calderwood Cottage.

Inside, the benefits of moving the door and wall were even more pronounced. The original layout was undeniably a waste of precious space, featuring a peculiar little shelf whose purpose remained a mystery. In a small house like Calderwood Cottage, every square inch counts, and optimizing space for maximum utility is paramount. By shifting the entrance, we successfully created ample room along the back wall for much-needed storage cabinets. This decision involved a careful consideration: should we prioritize natural light from an existing, albeit broken, window, or opt for essential storage? Given the cottage’s compact footprint, the choice was clear. The window mechanisms were completely broken anyway, so we had no qualms about foregoing them to gain valuable storage solutions. These cabinets will provide crucial organizational space, ensuring the cottage remains clutter-free and highly functional. This thoughtful design choice transforms an inefficient area into a highly practical and aesthetically pleasing part of the home, proving that strategic planning can unlock hidden potential in any renovation project.

Master Bathroom Transformation: From Laundry Room to Luxury
Perhaps the most dramatic transformation in the back section of Calderwood Cottage involves what was once a sprawling laundry room. This area, located in the back half of the “back of the house,” was an oversized space equipped with hook-ups for a washer and dryer. While functional, it felt disproportionately large for a laundry area in a cozy cottage and represented a significant underutilization of space. Our vision for this section was far grander: we are meticulously converting it into a luxurious master bathroom, a true oasis within the cottage.
This particular section of the house was an addition to the original structure, a detail that often brings both challenges and delightful surprises. As we began the demolition process, peeling back layers of paneling, we uncovered a remarkable piece of the cottage’s history: the original brick exterior. This discovery was a true “aha!” moment, revealing the craftsmanship and character of the home’s initial construction. The exposed brick offers a rustic charm and textural interest that we plan to incorporate into the new master bathroom design, blending the old with the new in a harmonious way. Preserving and highlighting this original feature adds an authentic touch, grounding the modern amenities of the new bathroom in the cottage’s historic roots.

The Challenging Conversion: From Bricked-Over Window to New Doorway
The discovery of the original brick also brought with it another exciting revelation: an original window that had been completely bricked over during the construction of the addition. This hidden gem presented a unique opportunity. Instead of simply re-opening it as a window, we decided to transform it into a doorway, providing a direct entrance to our new master bathroom. This structural change promised to enhance the flow and accessibility of the cottage, connecting spaces in a more intuitive way.
However, turning a bricked-over window into a functional doorway is no small feat. The first challenge was meticulously cutting through the dense mortar lines that held the brick wall together. We explored various options for specialized tools, but many were either prohibitively expensive to buy or rent for a single job, or simply too heavy and cumbersome for us to manage safely and effectively. Resourcefulness is key in DIY projects, so after trying a few less-than-ideal methods, we settled on using a trusty rotary hammer equipped with a chisel bit. This tool proved to be surprisingly effective, albeit labor-intensive, for precisely carving out the necessary lines in the sturdy brickwork. It allowed us to systematically dismantle the wall without needing industrial-grade equipment, embodying the spirit of practical, hands-on renovation.

The Demolition Dance: Sledgehammers and Laughter
Even after meticulously cutting through all the mortar lines, we were quite surprised by how stubbornly the brick wall resisted falling over. It seemed to have a will of its own! This is where sheer determination and a bit of brute force came into play. Julie and I took turns whacking the remaining sections with our modest sledgehammer. We truly don’t have the luxury of running into town to acquire a new, specialized tool every time we encounter a minor setback. Sometimes, old-fashioned elbow grease and a reliable, albeit “little,” sledgehammer are exactly what you need to get the job done.

I was, of course, filming to capture the highly anticipated moment the wall finally toppled over. What resulted was an unintentionally hilarious video that makes me laugh out loud every single time I watch it. Julie, ever the trooper, had a pulled muscle in her glute that she kept forgetting about in the heat of the moment. With each powerful kick against the stubborn brick, she would wince in pain, creating a comical juxtaposition of determination and physical discomfort. It’s a perfect encapsulation of the realities of DIY – moments of frustration mixed with bursts of laughter and the eventual triumph of perseverance. Despite the pulled muscle, her tenacity was admirable, and the memory of her “demolition dance” will certainly be a highlight of this entire renovation project.
A New Beginning: The Master Bathroom Entrance Unveiled
Against all odds and through plenty of sweat and a few laughs, we got it done. The once bricked-over window, an relic of the past, has been successfully transformed into a magnificent new entrance. This now frames the gateway to our soon-to-be master bathroom, marking a pivotal moment in the Calderwood Cottage renovation. This new doorway not only improves the flow and functionality of the interior space but also serves as a testament to our dedication to preserving the cottage’s unique character while modernizing its living areas. The satisfaction of seeing this significant structural change completed is immense, and we are incredibly excited for the next steps in creating a beautiful, functional master retreat. The back section of Calderwood Cottage is well on its way to becoming a cherished and integral part of this charming home, reflecting our commitment to thoughtful design and diligent craftsmanship. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to shape our vision for this special place!
