Transforming a home, one project at a time, brings immense satisfaction and functional improvements. Today, I’m thrilled to share the completion of a highly anticipated project: our new recessed wall cabinet, perfectly situated over the toilet in the Jack and Jill bathroom’s water closet. This custom-built, between-the-studs wall cabinet is more than just a storage solution; it’s a testament to thoughtful design and efficient use of space, providing the ideal spot for toilet paper, personal care items, and other essential bathroom necessities. And yes, it comes with doors—because in a real-life, busy household bathroom, hidden storage is truly a game-changer for maintaining a tidy environment.

While these photos showcase the cabinet’s contents styled to perfection, reflecting an organized oasis, I harbor no illusions about its everyday appearance. My family has a unique talent for transforming neatly arranged spaces into, shall we say, “lived-in” environments with remarkable speed. I plan to check back in a week to see if the notorious “white tornado” has swept through, a common occurrence once my back is turned. This charming chaos is precisely why I document these projects; it allows me to revisit the pristine beginnings before real life truly moves in. It’s a bittersweet reality for any DIY enthusiast, but the satisfaction of a well-executed project endures.

The Vision: Crafting a Recessed Bathroom Cabinet for Optimal Storage
The journey to creating this recessed wall cabinet began long before construction, during the initial framing stages of this Jack and Jill bathroom. Understanding the critical need for efficient storage in any bathroom, especially one shared, I knew a conventional protruding cabinet would obstruct valuable space above the toilet. The solution? A sleek, built-in cabinet seamlessly integrated into the wall cavity, offering maximum storage without compromising precious floor space or creating visual clutter. Recessed cabinets are ideal for small bathrooms or any area where you want to maintain a clean, minimalist aesthetic.
The specific location for this toilet paper storage cabinet was originally a doorway leading into a smaller bathroom. Initially, I had sealed this opening, adding a central stud and drywalling the bedroom side. However, the idea of leveraging this newfound wall space for custom recessed storage sparked a different, more ambitious approach. Recognizing the opportunity to create a truly tailored solution, I reconsidered the standard framing. Instead of adhering to the typical 16-inch on-center stud spacing, I decided to tailor the opening to my specific needs, ensuring maximum utility and depth without sacrificing aesthetic appeal.
Strategic Wall Modification for Enhanced Storage Depth
To achieve the desired recessed depth and width for my bathroom storage cabinet, the initial single stud I had installed was carefully removed. This allowed for greater flexibility in creating the rough opening. I then introduced a horizontal stud, positioned strategically above the toilet’s height, defining the top boundary of the cabinet. The sides of the opening were adjusted by adding vertical blocking to narrow the total width of my recessed cavity to a precise 21 inches. This careful planning ensures that the cabinet fits snugly and provides ample storage without protruding into the bathroom space, which is a common problem with traditional wall-mounted units.
A crucial decision in maximizing the cabinet’s utility was to gain an extra 1/2 inch of depth. While standard practice would involve installing drywall on both sides of the wall, I opted to omit drywall on the bedroom side. This choice, though unconventional, was driven by the specific design plan for the adjacent bedroom wall, which features Plywood V-Groove Planks. These planks, at 1/4 inch thick, would directly cover the framing, effectively providing a finished surface while allowing the cabinet to utilize the full depth of the wall cavity. This seemingly small gain of 1/2 inch makes a significant difference in a shallow cabinet, maximizing storage capacity for bulky items like multiple rolls of toilet paper or larger bathroom essentials.

I must admit, the thought of someone, years from now, tearing into that plank wall and encountering an unexpected framing setup does bring a smile to my face—they might utter a few choice words! But that future “someone” won’t be me. I intend to fully enjoy both my beautiful plank wall and the precious extra 1/2 inch of depth in my recessed toilet paper storage cabinet for as long as I reside in this home. It’s a small customization that yields significant functional benefits and is a perfect example of smart small bedroom design and space optimization.

Building the Ultimate Recessed Toilet Paper Storage Cabinet
For the construction of this custom recessed cabinet, I chose 1/2-inch MDF (Medium-Density Fiberboard) for the entire structure, including the back panel. While I typically use 1/4-inch plywood for cabinet backs, the unique circumstance of the adjacent 1/4-inch plywood plank wall on the bedroom side necessitated a sturdier solution. The 1/2-inch MDF back provides enhanced rigidity and structural integrity, crucial for a built-in unit that needs to withstand daily use and maintain its form over time. MDF is also an excellent choice for painting, providing a smooth, flawless finish.
Cabinet Box Assembly: Precision and Strength for Your DIY Project
Assembling the cabinet box was straightforward, focusing on durability and squareness. The top and bottom panels were securely joined to the side panels using a combination of wood glue and screws. This method ensures robust connections that resist racking and maintain the cabinet’s structural integrity, vital for any DIY cabinet project. After the main box was assembled, the 1/2-inch MDF back was carefully fitted and permanently attached. It was glued and nailed around its entire perimeter, firmly securing it to the top, bottom, and both side panels. This not only reinforces the cabinet but also provides a solid foundation for the subsequent installation process into the wall cavity.

It’s important to remember that this cabinet was sized precisely for the custom opening I created, which deviates from typical 16-inch on-center stud spacing. For those embarking on a similar DIY project, precise measurements of your specific wall cavity are paramount. My detailed drawings, provided below, serve as a valuable guide, but you will need to adapt the dimensions to fit your unique space. Accuracy in measuring and cutting is key to a professional-looking built-in installation, ensuring your over the toilet storage solution is perfectly integrated.

Seamless Installation and Finishing Touches for Your Custom Storage
Once the cabinet box was meticulously assembled, the next step was to carefully slide it into its prepared rough opening within the wall. This required precise alignment to ensure it was perfectly level and plumb within the between studs cabinet space. Once in position, the cabinet was securely fastened to the wall studs through its sides using appropriate fasteners like screws or nails. It’s crucial that the front edge of the cabinet sits flush with the existing drywall, creating a seamless transition for the upcoming face frame, which is key to a professional built-in look.

The addition of a 1×2 face frame is essential for both aesthetics and functionality. It provides a finished look, conceals the raw edges of the cabinet box and drywall, and offers a solid surface for mounting the doors. Each piece of the face frame was cut, mitered, and then glued and nailed into place, piece by piece, ensuring a tight, professional finish. A deliberate 1/2-inch overhang was left on the inside of the cabinet, which later serves a crucial purpose in supporting the fixed shelves, further maximizing the utility of this space-saving bathroom storage solution.

With the face frame in place, the cabinet was ready for priming and painting. I utilized my airless sprayer for this stage, coating the cabinet at the same time I was painting the plywood plank walls in the adjacent bedroom. This not only ensured a consistent finish but also saved time and effort, maximizing efficiency during the project. Proper priming is especially important for MDF to seal its porous surface and ensure a smooth, durable paint finish.

Innovative Shelf Installation for Maximized Space and Organization
To optimize every inch of the shallow cabinet depth and avoid the complexity of adjustable shelf hardware, I opted for fixed shelves installed with a creative method: caulk adhesive. This approach proved to be incredibly effective for adding robust shelves without further encroaching on the limited interior space. I cut numerous pieces of 1/2-inch MDF for both the vertical side supports and the horizontal shelves. The installation involved first gluing a pair of side supports to the cabinet interior, just behind the 1/2-inch face frame overhang. Once these were securely in place, a shelf was laid on top and adhered. This process was repeated several times, layering supports and shelves until the desired number of compartments was achieved. For the final shelf, the last set of side supports was cut to fit precisely and glued into position.

Following the installation of all shelves, a generous amount of caulk was applied to all seams and edges. This not only provided additional structural integrity to the shelves but also created a smooth, finished appearance, ready for final paint. While it might have been slightly easier to install the shelves during the initial cabinet assembly, the pressing need to get the cabinet box installed quickly—to proceed with planking the bedroom wall—meant I tackled the shelves later. This second phase required a brush and roller for priming and painting the new shelf components, a slower but equally effective method for smaller, intricate areas, ensuring a seamless finish for our custom bathroom cabinetry.

Selecting and Installing the Cabinet Doors: A Key to Hidden Bathroom Storage
The cabinet doors, sourced from CabinetNow.com, represent a crucial aesthetic and functional element of this built-in storage solution. For this particular recessed cabinet, I chose full overlay doors. This decision was deliberate and practical: in a very shallow cabinet, inset doors would consume an additional 3/4 inch of precious interior space, significantly reducing its storage capacity. Full overlay doors, by contrast, sit proud of the face frame, maximizing the internal depth of the cabinet. This choice ensures that the only parts of the cabinet that extend beyond the wall cavity are the face frame and the doors themselves, resulting in a minimal projection of less than 2 inches from the wall—a truly streamlined, space-saving design perfect for an over the toilet storage unit. The doors complete the transformation, turning a simple wall cavity into an elegant and organized feature.

The Reward: A Beautifully Organized Bathroom with Hidden Storage
The completion of this recessed wall cabinet has brought a profound sense of order and serenity to our Jack and Jill water closet. No longer are extra toilet paper rolls, spare soaps, razors, or various shower and toilet room supplies left cluttering countertops or precariously stacked. Instead, everything has its designated place, neatly tucked away behind elegant doors. This strategic bathroom organization solution not only keeps essential items within easy reach but also contributes to a calmer, more aesthetically pleasing environment, free from visual distractions.

The true brilliance of having cabinet doors, beyond the aesthetic appeal, lies in the ability to maintain a perpetually tidy appearance. I never have to witness how others in the household choose to store their supplies—whether stacked by size and color, perfectly aligned, or simply tossed in. What happens behind those closed doors remains a mystery, allowing me to enjoy the calm and organized exterior. And for someone who appreciates things neatly stacked, sorted, and facing the same direction, this feature is truly invaluable for peace of mind. This DIY recessed cabinet is a testament to functional design and the benefits of custom home improvement.

Indeed, if I don’t see it, it won’t bother me! This project underscores the power of custom solutions in home design. A DIY recessed wall cabinet not only maximizes an often-underutilized space but also elevates the functionality and aesthetic of a bathroom, turning a challenge into an elegant, practical feature. It’s a prime example of how thoughtful planning and execution can result in a significant upgrade to your home’s organization and appeal, particularly in areas like small bathroom storage. Consider a built-in solution for your next home renovation to truly make the most of your space.
