Sawdust Girl Design Build Journey

Unleashing Your Inner Creator: My Journey in Design, Building, and Remodeling

I frequently receive questions about my journey into the world of building, remodeling, and designing. Many aspiring creators ask for advice on how to embark on a similar path. For me, the secret lies in a balanced approach: my skills are truly 50/50 – split equally between design prowess and construction expertise. It’s this powerful synergy of both vision and execution that allows me to transform ordinary spaces into something truly extraordinary.

My full story is detailed on my About Me page, but if there’s one pivotal takeaway from my experience, it’s this: I absolutely adore what I do. This deep-seated passion is the engine that drives me. I thrive on the creative process, taking drab, dysfunctional, or simply uninspired rooms and breathing new life into them. Without this profound love for the craft, I don’t believe anyone could dedicate the immense amount of time, navigate the inevitable challenges and “hick-ups” that constantly arise, muster the patience for the intricate “fiddle factor” required, or expend the sheer physical energy needed to tackle the demanding projects I undertake.

The Art of Vision: Cultivating Your Design Eye

Discovering Your Design Passion

For as long as I can remember, I’ve found immense satisfaction in making every space I inhabit more functional, aesthetically pleasing, and uniquely mine. It’s almost an involuntary habit; I rarely walk into a room—be it in a home, an office building, or a restaurant—without mentally re-imagining its potential, mentally sketching out a complete renovation. If you find yourself doing the same, constantly visualizing improvements and dreaming of transformations, then you might just have the “design bug.”

Do you find yourself eating, sleeping, drinking, dreaming, and breathing design? Is it a constant hum in the back of your mind, a perpetual source of inspiration and problem-solving? If so, there’s a strong indication that design is not just a passing interest but a genuine passion waiting to be nurtured and expressed.

From Inspiration to Cohesion: Learning Design Principles

Perhaps you’re brimming with fantastic ideas for projects or specific elements within a room, but you struggle to weave them together into a harmonious, cohesive space where every component works in unison. This is where formal design education, even basic interior design classes, can be incredibly valuable. While creativity is often innate, design principles can be taught and mastered. These foundational techniques offer a robust framework to guide you through critical aspects of space planning:

  • Room Layout & Flow: Understanding how to arrange furniture and elements to maximize space and create intuitive pathways.
  • Proper Lighting: Learning to utilize natural and artificial light to enhance mood, functionality, and highlight architectural features.
  • Color Theory: Mastering the art of selecting color palettes that evoke desired emotions, create visual balance, and reflect personal style.
  • Material Selection: Choosing appropriate materials and finishes for durability, aesthetics, and overall tactile experience.
  • Scale and Proportion: Ensuring that all elements within a room relate to each other in a visually pleasing and functional way.

These learned techniques don’t stifle creativity; rather, they provide a toolkit that empowers you to execute your visions with greater confidence and professionalism.

Embracing Your Unique Style: Beyond the Rules

That being said, I am not a staunch believer in rigid “rules” when it comes to design. While principles offer guidance, true style emerges from within. My approach is simple: I like what I like, and I design what makes my eyes happy. That, ultimately, is my unique style.

Style is inherently personal; it’s your design character, your visual personality. It’s subjective, evolving, and beautifully diverse. We all gravitate towards different aesthetics, and for the most part, our individual styles are dynamic, shifting and maturing much like the seasons. If you consistently pursue what genuinely delights your senses and brings you joy, what truly is there to worry about?

Even if your creations don’t resonate with everyone else in the world, if you are content with the space you’ve crafted and feel happy living within it, then you’ve achieved the ultimate goal. Isn’t the fundamental purpose of home design and renovation to create an environment that *you* genuinely love and thrive in? Your home should be a reflection of your soul, a sanctuary that brings you comfort and inspiration every single day.

The Craft of Execution: Developing Your Building Skills

My Humble Beginnings in Carpentry

For me, the practical journey into building began with an intensive, two-day “Carpentry 101” session, taught by my brother, Rollin – who is, in a word, pure awesome sauce! It’s worth noting that a significant portion of my large family is remarkably adept in various DIY skills. I often wish we lived closer; we could have epic DIY parties, tackling and completing each other’s projects in record time! That brief but crucial two-day immersion in carpentry basics was all it took to ignite my building journey and set me on this incredible path.

I got to see Rollin for like 5 minutes this year when I went to Utah for SNAP conference. It was short but sweet!

A World of Learning Opportunities

But what if you don’t have a skilled sibling, parent, friend, or mentor readily available to jumpstart your hands-on learning? Fear not, the resources for aspiring builders are more abundant now than ever before. The digital age has democratized learning, making practical skills accessible to everyone. Consider these avenues:

  • Formal Classes & Workshops: Local community colleges, hardware stores, and specialized craft centers often offer courses in woodworking, basic carpentry, electrical wiring, plumbing, and other essential home improvement skills.
  • Online Video Tutorials: Platforms like YouTube are treasure troves of step-by-step guides for almost any building task imaginable. From framing a wall to installing intricate trim, there’s a video for it.
  • Blogs & Websites: Countless DIY blogs (like this one!) and home improvement websites provide detailed tutorials, tips, techniques, and project plans.
  • Books & Magazines: Traditional print resources still offer comprehensive guides and inspirational content that can deepen your understanding of various trades.
  • Mentorship & Community: Seek out local DIY groups, makerspaces, or even experienced tradespeople who might be willing to offer guidance or advice.

The Journey of Continuous Growth: Start Small, Learn Constantly

The key to mastering building skills is to start small and incrementally build a robust foundation that continues to grow and evolve indefinitely. Don’t fall into the trap of expecting to construct the Taj Mahal as your very first project. Begin with manageable tasks that allow you to practice fundamental techniques and gain confidence.

Examples of excellent starter projects include:

  • Building a simple bookshelf or storage crate.
  • Installing new trim or baseboards.
  • Patching drywall or painting a room.
  • Assembling flat-pack furniture with a focus on precision.
  • Repairing a leaky faucet or replacing a light fixture.

Like any skill or talent, proficiency in building demands hard work, dedication, and consistent effort to hone. Take on one simple project, then another, and another, steadily plugging away and learning with each step. Most often, the most profound lessons are learned from making mistakes. There is no endpoint to this journey; you are constantly growing, adapting, and perfecting your craft. There is no magic formula for instant success; it’s a testament to hard work, patience, and persistent practice.

Embracing Challenges and Finding Joy in Creation

With every project I undertake, I invariably learn something new, push my perceived limits a little further, and experiment with novel techniques. Of course, there are plenty of moments when frustration sets in—sometimes intensely so, bordering on anger. The process isn’t always smooth. However, the overwhelming majority of the time, I feel an incredible sense of exhilaration and excitement, eagerly anticipating getting back to work on my latest creation.

While everyone undoubtedly has their own compelling reasons for diving into and sticking with “BIY” (Build It Yourself) projects, for me, it’s a multifaceted combination:

  • Saving Money: DIY often provides significant cost savings compared to hiring professionals.
  • Unparalleled Control: I value the ability to oversee every detail, ensuring the project aligns precisely with my vision.
  • High Expectations for Results: I strive for perfection and can ensure the quality meets my personal standards.
  • Precision & Specificity: The desire for every little thing to be “just so,” from the finish to the fit, is a powerful motivator.
  • Flexibility & Adaptability: The freedom to pivot and change the plan mid-project if I decide it needs to be done differently is invaluable.
  • The Sheer Joy of Creating: Above all, I deeply love the act of bringing something tangible into existence with my own hands.

This hands-on work, this transformation of raw materials into functional beauty, is my “art.” And it makes me incredibly happy, offering a profound sense of accomplishment and creative fulfillment that few other endeavors can match.
