Partnering with Madison & Duluth: Don’t Miss Our Giveaway!

Hello fellow DIY enthusiasts and home improvement warriors! I am absolutely thrilled to share some incredibly exciting news. I’ve partnered with the phenomenal team at Duluth Trading Co. for an amazing project, and I’m not doing it alone! My wonderful daughter, Madison, is joining me on this adventure, bringing her unique perspective and boundless energy to the mix. Madison and I are definitely individuals with distinct personalities, a vibrant testament to the fact that even those with completely different interests and thought processes can find common ground and collaborate beautifully.

While our interests might diverge and our brains process information in unique ways – sometimes making communication a delightful challenge – we share a core set of characteristics that bind us: we are both resilient, strong, and confident women. We don’t shy away from hard work, and we’re certainly not afraid to roll up our sleeves, get our hands dirty, and put in the effort required to accomplish something truly meaningful. It’s this shared spirit of determination and practicality that makes our partnership with Duluth Trading Co. so perfectly aligned.

Duluth Trading Co.: Redefining Rugged and Functional Workwear for Women

Duluth Trading Co. stands as a beacon for those who demand more from their apparel. Their philosophy revolves around creating rugged, highly functional, and supremely comfortable workwear, along with innovative accessories, designed to tackle any task. What truly sets them apart is their unwavering commitment to authenticity and clarity. They embody a “keep it real” ethos that resonates deeply with me. There’s never any ambiguity about a product’s purpose; its design directly addresses a real-world problem.

Take, for instance, their iconic LongTail T-shirts. The name itself hints at its ingenious solution. This extended length isn’t just a style choice; it’s a practical fix for what they unashamedly call “plumber’s butt.” It’s a simple, straightforward solution to a common, often overlooked issue, ensuring comfort and modesty throughout a demanding workday. This dedication to solving real problems with innovative, no-nonsense designs is precisely why Duluth Trading Co. has earned such a loyal following among tradespeople and DIYers alike.

As someone who also believes in keeping things real and tackling projects head-on, I’m a huge advocate for comfort and functionality in all aspects of life, especially when engaging in hands-on work. And yes, I wholeheartedly endorse the concept of covering what needs to be covered! It’s all about maintaining a sense of self-respect and professionalism, even when you’re knee-deep in sawdust or paint. I promise to uphold this principle as Madison and I embark on our exciting new building journey, sharing every step of our progress with you.

Our New DIY Adventure: A Built-In Bookshelf Transformation

Speaking of projects, Madison and I have set our sights on transforming a specific nook in our living room. For those who remember, this was the infamous alcove where I once had a bathtub! Yes, a bathtub in the living room – a relic of a past renovation phase. Now, we’re converting that space into something far more fitting for our home: a custom-designed, built-in bookshelf. This project is not just about adding storage; it’s about enhancing the aesthetic and functional appeal of our home, making it feel more complete and organized.

Madison, in particular, is an enthusiastic supporter of making our house feel more “finished.” Beyond that, she is an incredibly passionate reader and a huge fan of books. This makes the built-in bookshelf project an absolutely perfect endeavor for her to be deeply involved in. To put her dedication into perspective, she genuinely reads more books in a single month than I have probably read in my entire life! Her voracious appetite for literature means that our home is often filled with stacks of books, a joyful but sometimes overwhelming sight.

Her enthusiasm for reading, while admirable, once led to a bit of a challenge at the library. She had a habit of checking out the maximum limit of 15 books for herself, often borrowing against my library card limit as well, and sometimes these treasures would be returned a little late. The late fees on 25 books can quickly add up, and after one particularly costly incident that depleted her entire savings, she wisely decided to implement a personal limit of three books at a time. She also humorously concluded that not taking a giant tote bag to the library would help curb her urge to disregard her self-imposed limit. Sometimes, indeed, LESS really IS better, especially when it comes to managing library hauls!

This insight led us to discover the perfect solution for her book-carrying needs: a durable and stylish Duluth travel bag. It’s not just any bag; it’s perfectly sized to carry just the right amount of books, reinforcing her new, disciplined approach to library visits. It’s a small detail, but it perfectly illustrates how practical solutions can support positive habits, echoing Duluth’s commitment to functionality.

The Planning Phase: Bringing a Vision to Life

With our project goal firmly in mind, Madison and I dove into the planning stage. This involved a lot of measuring, discussing design options, and using painter’s tape to visualize the bookshelf’s dimensions on the wall. The initial tape lines were adjusted, refined, and moved at least ten times before we finally settled on a plan that felt just right. This iterative process is crucial for any DIY project, ensuring that the final build not only fits the space perfectly but also meets our aesthetic and functional requirements. It’s a testament to patience and collaboration, and it’s a vital part of teaching Madison the realities of hands-on work.

We are incredibly excited to share the entire project build with you, detailing our progress as it happens throughout the week. I always find that working with a firm deadline helps me stay focused and motivated, so I’ve set one for myself: Friday, November 21st! This tight timeline ensures that we move with purpose and efficiency, pushing us to bring this vision to life.

I’m deliberately making this dramatic to instill a super sense of urgency within myself, ensuring I get my metaphorical (and literal) butt in gear to make this project happen from start to FINISH!

Let’s just say we won’t be quitting our day jobs to pursue a new career in professional modeling anytime soon! In fact, I actually had to resort to a little bribery to convince Madison to participate in the photoshoot at all! Does it show? Bwahahaha!

Madison receiving a humorous tool safety refresher

With a big project ahead, I decided Madison needed a thorough (and slightly dramatic) refresher course in Tool Safety!

Unsurprisingly, she didn’t quite think she needed to pay full attention. Ah, teenagers!

Innovation in Workwear: DuluthFlex Fire Hose Cargo Pants

One of the standout pieces I’m wearing for this project is the innovative WOMEN’S DULUTHFLEX FIRE HOSE CARGO PANTS. These pants are an absolute game-changer for anyone engaged in demanding physical work, especially DIYers like us. What makes them truly brilliant is the inclusion of specialized pockets on the knees, designed specifically to accommodate KNEE PAD INSERTS! This feature is nothing short of revolutionary.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve struggled with traditional knee pads. They constantly slip down, bunch up, and the elastic straps behind the knee become incredibly uncomfortable and irritating after just a short period of wear. Duluth’s integrated knee pad solution completely eliminates these frustrations, offering continuous comfort and protection where it’s needed most. I specifically chose these pants for this very reason, prioritizing comfort and efficiency during long hours of kneeling, sawing, and building. Madison, on the other hand, opted for a pair of pants without these dedicated knee pad pockets. Perhaps she’ll learn the value of this feature the hard way!

(A friendly warning: not everyone possesses superhuman shins like mine, so I strongly advise against re-enacting this photo!)

While these incredible knee pads provide unparalleled protection for your knees, they, unfortunately, do nothing to alleviate a sudden, painful charlie horse. For those, you simply have to take a moment and stretch them out!

Building Skills and Cherishing Moments

Madison and I truly have a blast together. Our days are filled with laughter, silliness, and the pure joy of spending quality time side-by-side. This project isn’t just about building a bookshelf; it’s an invaluable opportunity for me to “teach” her the ropes of construction, empowering her with practical skills that will serve her well throughout her life. From understanding basic carpentry principles to learning how to safely operate tools, every step is a lesson in self-reliance and problem-solving.

As she gains these new abilities, I’m constantly reminded that the day she steps out on her own is approaching faster than I sometimes care to think about. It’s a bittersweet realization, but it only fuels my desire to equip her with every possible skill and ounce of confidence she’ll need to thrive independently.

She is growing up so incredibly fast, and I couldn’t be prouder of the remarkable young woman she is becoming. Madison embodies strength, capability, unwavering confidence, a fantastic sense of humor, brilliant intellect, captivating charisma, and profound compassion. She is truly an extraordinary person, and every moment we share on this project adds another layer to our special bond.
