Maryville House Tour: The Loft Experience

When we first acquired the Maryville house, the upstairs loft presented itself as a vast, undifferentiated expanse. It was a blank canvas, albeit one with a few existing features: a compact powder room and a small utility closet at the far end, discreetly housing the heat pump, the heart of the home’s climate control system. The stairway leading up to this area was flanked by standard half-walls, and, true to the ubiquitous nature of new construction, the entire space was carpeted in the same basic builder-grade material that seemed to follow us from every previous home purchase. It was functional, certainly, but devoid of personality and tailored purpose, waiting for a vision to unlock its full potential.

Transforming the Loft into a Versatile Lounge Area

Our initial vision for this expansive loft space was ambitious: to transform it into a sophisticated, multi-functional lounge. The first crucial step in achieving this was to enhance privacy and define the area more clearly. I extended the existing half-walls to the ceiling, effectively enclosing the space and creating a sense of intimacy and separation from the main living areas below. To complete this transformation, a solid door was added, instantly elevating the loft from an open thoroughfare to a secluded retreat.

Had we decided to make the Maryville house our long-term residence, this lounge would have been meticulously designed for comfort and relaxation. Imagine a cluster of large, exceptionally cozy club chairs, thoughtfully arranged around a stylish coffee table, inviting quiet conversation or solitary reading. The perimeter walls, currently bare, would have been adorned with custom-built bookshelves, brimming with literary treasures and decorative accents, creating an atmosphere of intellectual warmth and personal sanctuary. The versatility of this newly defined space was immense; it could effortlessly serve as an adult lounge, a quiet reading nook, a dedicated home office, or even a sophisticated entertainment area. However, with our decision to sell the house, our staging strategy shifted. To appeal to a broader market, particularly families, we opted to stage it as a vibrant and inviting kids’ playroom, showcasing its adaptability and generous dimensions.

For the temporary staging, the loft was filled with colorful, kid-friendly furniture and playful accessories, demonstrating its immediate utility as a dedicated space for children to learn, play, and grow. This arrangement highlighted the benefits of having an additional enclosed area in a family home, providing a safe and organized environment for toys, games, and creative activities, keeping the main living areas clutter-free. The transformation from an open, undefined space to a purposeful, enclosed room significantly enhanced the home’s functionality and appeal, proving that even a builder-grade loft holds immense potential for personalized design and versatile living.

Adjacent to this newly enclosed lounge, there was an existing alcove that presented a unique design challenge and opportunity. My original, more elaborate plan for this area involved creating a significantly larger and more luxurious bathroom. The existing toilet, tucked away in what felt like a tiny, closet-like room, would have remained in its current position for efficiency. However, the cramped pedestal sink directly opposite the toilet was slated for removal, making way for a much-needed storage closet, a perennial desire in almost any home. To truly open up this section and integrate it seamlessly with the envisioned larger bathroom, I even went so far as to remove the toilet closet door altogether at one point, with the grand intention of closing off the entire expanded section using a stylish, large sliding door – a design choice that would have added both elegance and functionality.

However, as is often the case in home renovation journeys, plans are subject to change. Our decision to put the house on the market altered the course of these detailed design aspirations. The focus shifted from creating our dream bathroom to making practical, aesthetically pleasing updates that would appeal to potential buyers and ensure the home was presented in its best light. Consequently, the elaborate bathroom expansion was scaled back to a more sensible, less personal finish, ensuring everything was complete enough to make sense to a future homeowner without investing in highly customized features that might not resonate with everyone. This practical pivot allowed us to focus on finishing touches elsewhere, streamlining the preparation for sale while still enhancing the home’s overall functionality and appeal.

Further along, this compact hallway serves as a transitional space, leading gracefully into what would become the craft room. Initially, I had envisioned creating a cozy reading nook or installing a chic lounge chair in this particular corner, transforming it into a quiet retreat for contemplation or a quick break. However, as the project evolved and practicalities came into play, we opted for a more flexible and playful solution: a couple of cool, comfortable beanbags. This choice proved to be an unexpected delight, providing adaptable seating that could be easily rearranged or moved as needed, perfect for casual relaxation or accommodating extra guests in a pinch. It remains a surprisingly neat and inviting nook, offering a laid-back charm that complements the creative energy of the adjacent craft room. Its simple yet effective design demonstrates how even small, often overlooked transitional spaces can be imbued with purpose and style, adding to the overall functionality and appeal of a home.

Craft Room: A Dream Workspace for Creativity and Organization

The craft room, undoubtedly one of the most exciting transformations in the Maryville house, truly embodies the concept of a dedicated creative sanctuary. I’ve already had the pleasure of sharing the ultimate craft room reveal in a previous post, showcasing its incredible functionality and thoughtful design. However, there’s one significant addition that followed that initial reveal: the installation of a magnificent L-shaped desk, which further solidified the room’s status as a powerhouse of productivity and artistic expression. This desk was a game-changer, integrating seamlessly into the space and offering an unparalleled work surface.

As I mentioned in that earlier post, my commitment to building a custom desk for this area stemmed from a desire to make the space intuitively functional and visually cohesive. Before its arrival, that particular wall was a vast, somewhat perplexing expanse, punctuated only by a generous array of electrical receptacles—a clear indication of its potential, yet lacking a defined purpose. Now, with the custom L-shaped desk firmly in place, it has been utterly transformed. This desk isn’t just a surface; it’s a strategically designed hub, perfectly suited for homeschooling activities, extensive craft projects, or any creative endeavor requiring ample space and meticulous organization. Its thoughtful design maximizes the room’s utility, ensuring every inch serves a purpose and every task can be approached with ease and efficiency, making it an ideal environment for focused work and boundless creativity.

The true beauty of this craft room lies in its meticulously planned features, each designed to enhance organization and foster creativity. One of my absolute favorite elements, and a true standout, is the impressive set of map drawers. These aren’t just any storage units; their wide, shallow compartments are perfect for neatly organizing an array of flat materials—think large sheets of paper, fabric swatches, stencils, or even treasured artwork. They eliminate clutter and ensure that often-awkward items are stored flat, protected, and easily accessible, making them an indispensable asset for any serious crafter or artist. The sheer joy of having everything in its place, ready for inspiration to strike, is immeasurable.

Beyond the map drawers, the room boasts other equally impressive features that contribute to its extraordinary functionality. I also absolutely adore the giant central island, a true workhorse in the space. Its expansive surface provides ample room for spreading out projects, whether it’s intricate papercrafts, detailed sketching, or assembling larger pieces. At one end of this magnificent island, a cleverly integrated wrapping paper storage cabinet stands ready. This dedicated station is a dream for anyone who frequently wraps gifts or needs easy access to various rolls of paper, ribbons, and tags. It transforms what could be a messy, frustrating task into an organized, enjoyable experience, keeping all wrapping essentials neatly tucked away yet immediately at hand.

And let’s not forget the colossal project table, another cornerstone of this creative haven. While I initially conceived it primarily as a fabric cutting table—a personal necessity born from my aversion to crawling on the floor to meticulously cut out large patterns for sewing projects—its utility extends far beyond. On those rare but cherished occasions when I do bring out my sewing machine, this table provides an ergonomically friendly and spacious surface, making the process much more comfortable and precise. The underlying philosophy behind this grand craft room was to build a functional area for every conceivable craft I might ever want to pursue. It was about creating a space where no creative endeavor felt limited by a lack of space or organization, ensuring that whether it’s sewing, painting, scrapbooking, or any other DIY project, the environment is perfectly equipped to support it. This room is a testament to designing a space that anticipates and facilitates all forms of artistic expression.

The Craft Room: A Remarkable Before & After Transformation

To truly appreciate the magnitude of this transformation, it’s essential to look back at where it all began. This photograph captures the “before” state of the craft room half of the loft, exactly as it appeared when we first took ownership of the Maryville house. It was an undifferentiated segment of the open loft, presenting a stark contrast to the vibrant, highly functional space it would ultimately become. At this stage, it was merely a part of the generic builder layout, full of untapped potential but lacking any specific purpose or character, a blank slate waiting for inspiration to strike and hands to bring a vision to life. The transformation from this uninspired starting point to a dedicated creative hub is truly remarkable.

And now, for a close-to-same view, showcasing the incredible metamorphosis this space has undergone. The comparison between the “before” image and this “after” shot highlights not just a renovation, but a complete reimagining of the area’s purpose and aesthetic. Where there was once an empty, uninspired stretch of floor and wall, there now stands a testament to thoughtful design and diligent craftsmanship. This view captures the essence of the finished craft room, brimming with personalized features and optimized for creative work, demonstrating how vision and effort can transform a mundane space into a source of daily inspiration and productivity.

Reflecting on this extensive home transformation, I find myself filled with a profound sense of satisfaction regarding how I designed and executed both the craft room and the loft lounge. Each space was carefully considered and crafted, and I am confident that the new owners will derive immense enjoyment and utility from them. There’s a tinge of bittersweetness, of course, in leaving behind such an abundance of meticulously planned counter space and bespoke storage solutions, especially in the craft room, which truly became a haven of creativity. However, life, interests, and needs are constantly evolving, and mine have certainly shifted considerably since the initial design phases of these rooms.

Back then, my blog was still operating under the name “Sawdust and Paper Scraps,” perfectly encapsulating my balanced passion for both woodworking and an array of intricate crafting projects. My daughter, Madison, was also at the prime age for imaginative play, necessitating dedicated spaces where she could engage in toy-filled adventures and simply “hang out.” Now, with Madison off to college, the dynamics of our home life have transformed, and my own creative pursuits have gravitated much more towards the substantial “sawdust” end of the spectrum, with less emphasis on the “paper scraps” portion. This natural evolution means that while I cherish the memories and the craftsmanship invested in these spaces, I’m also eagerly looking forward to what comes next. In our upcoming house, the focus will undoubtedly be on creating an even more spectacular and personalized workshop—a dedicated space where my woodworking passions can truly flourish without bounds. I simply cannot wait to embark on that exciting new chapter and get started on designing and building the workshop of my dreams!
