We’re thrilled to kick off this house tour, inviting you to step through the front door and into the heart of our carefully redesigned “Entry” area. A Grand Transformation: The Entryway

Our journey with this house began with a vision for openness and natural light, especially evident in the entryway. When we first acquired this property, the library presented itself as a far more enclosed, almost isolated space, accessible only through a narrow doorway from the entry hallway. The initial layout felt restrictive, hindering both the flow of movement and the spread of light. While finding comprehensive “before” photos can be a challenge, the one below provides a clear indication of its previous configuration – and rest assured, we’ll delve into the mystery of the “X” marked over the coat closet in a future post, revealing another exciting renovation!

Entry – “Before”

One of the most impactful decisions in this renovation was to dramatically open up the library to the entryway. This strategic alteration wasn’t just about knocking down a wall; it was about transforming the entire feel of both spaces. By creating a wider, more expansive opening, we instantly dissolved the sense of confinement. Now, instead of two distinct and somewhat small rooms, we have a flowing, interconnected area that feels significantly more open and much larger, even if the actual square footage hasn’t changed. Crucially, the entryway is now bathed in the glorious natural light streaming in from the library’s window, making it feel bright, welcoming, and infinitely more inviting.

Following the structural work of expanding the entrance into the library, my focus shifted to the intricate details that truly elevate a space: the trim work. I meticulously trimmed out every angle and edge, giving the space a polished, custom-built appearance. For the entry ceiling and the wall directly opposite the library, I chose to install beautiful V-Groove Wood Planks. This not only adds incredible texture and architectural interest but also introduces a subtle warmth and a timeless character that immediately catches the eye. The planks draw the gaze upward, enhancing the perceived height of the ceiling and creating a cohesive design element. Furthermore, to underscore the importance of the transitional spaces, I crafted and installed some bulky trim around the doorways. This substantial trim work frames both the entry from the living room and the newly enlarged opening into the library, defining these thresholds with elegance and robust architectural presence. It’s these thoughtful details that transform a simple hallway into an intentional, welcoming entry point to our home, setting the tone for the design aesthetic throughout.

The Heart of Knowledge: Our Custom Library

Stepping inside the library, the design narrative continues with an emphasis on rich detail and personalized craftsmanship. Echoing the entryway, I also planked the ceiling in this space, creating a beautiful continuity and enveloping the room in a sense of cozy sophistication. The walls were given a classic yet contemporary update with exquisite wainscoting, which adds a layer of depth, texture, and historical charm. This lower paneling not only protects the walls but also grounds the room, providing a beautiful counterpoint to the towering bookshelves above. However, the true focal point and the crowning glory of this library is the magnificent full wall of arched bookcases. These aren’t just shelves; they are a bespoke architectural statement, designed to house our collection of books and cherished objects while exuding an air of timeless elegance. The gentle curve of the arches softens the linear design, adding a bespoke, handcrafted feel that makes this room truly unique and inviting. Each detail, from the selection of materials to the precise construction, was meticulously planned to create a space that is both highly functional and aesthetically inspiring, a true bibliophile’s dream come true.

It’s truly astonishing, isn’t it, how the strategic application of trim and a fresh coat of paint can utterly transform a space? These elements are far more than just finishing touches; they are powerful design tools that can dramatically alter the perception and character of a room. Trim work, whether it’s crown molding, baseboards, or custom architectural details like the bulky trim we installed, adds depth, dimension, and a sense of bespoke craftsmanship. It frames windows and doors, defines ceilings and floors, and breaks up large expanses of wall, lending an air of sophistication and architectural interest that elevates a room from ordinary to extraordinary. Similarly, paint, with its incredible versatility, can change the mood, lighten a dark space, or bring cohesion to disparate elements. A thoughtful color palette, combined with crisp lines and expertly applied trim, can highlight architectural features, create focal points, and seamlessly blend new additions with existing structures. In our library and entryway, the combination of intricate trim and a carefully chosen paint scheme has created a cohesive, elegant, and inviting atmosphere that feels both timeless and distinctly ours. It just goes to show that sometimes, the most significant transformations come from these often-underestimated, yet incredibly impactful, design decisions!

Continuing our journey back into the entry hallway, we encounter another significant modification that dramatically improved the home’s functionality and aesthetic. Originally, there was a second doorway in the entry hallway, directly opposite the library, which led into the dining room. This initial configuration presented several challenges that ultimately prompted a complete overhaul. The biggest “buggy” thing, as I like to call it, was the glaring inconsistency between these two doorways. They were neither the same height nor width, and to make matters worse, they weren’t even placed exactly opposite each other. This asymmetry created an awkward visual imbalance and disrupted the flow of the entire entryway. It made the space feel disjointed and lacked the cohesive design language we aimed for. Such mismatched openings can be a real headache in interior design, often making a space feel less intentional and less polished.

To address these aesthetic and functional issues, I made the bold decision to completely close off the dining room doorway and plank that entire wall. This strategic move instantly resolved the asymmetry and created a beautifully uninterrupted expanse. The V-Groove planking extends seamlessly across this newly solid wall, tying into the design elements already established in the entry ceiling and the wall opposite the library. The result is a much cleaner, more cohesive visual line that enhances the overall sense of spaciousness and order in the entryway. Beyond the visual appeal, this transformation offered a substantial practical benefit: a vast, unbroken wall for storage and display. I absolutely love having this dedicated wall; it provides endless opportunities for personalization and functionality. To capitalize on this potential, I built a simple yet elegant console table specifically for this space. Its clean lines and thoughtful design provide a perfect platform for seasonal decor, cherished art pieces, or even practical storage solutions like decorative baskets or trays. The versatility of this wall means it can evolve with our needs and tastes, offering ample potential for decor and/or storage, making it a truly valuable addition to our home.

With the dining room doorway now closed off from the entry, we’ve rerouted the flow, and the dining room entrance is now beautifully open to both the living room and the kitchen. Of course, achieving this seamless open-concept feel required another significant undertaking: the complete removal of the wall that originally separated the kitchen and living room. This pivotal structural change was essential to allow for the new, integrated flow between these key communal spaces. The impact of these interconnected areas is profound, creating a central hub for family life, entertaining, and daily activities. We’ll be diving into the exciting details and transformations of these three rooms – the living room, dining room, and kitchen – in our very next post, coming your way later this week. Get ready to see how an open-concept design can truly revolutionize a home, enhancing connectivity, natural light, and modern living!

We can’t wait to share the rest of our home with you and continue this journey of transformation. See you soon!
