Our Comprehensive Kitchen Renovation Journey: A Year of Transformation and Beyond

Happy New Year! As we step into 2015, it’s the perfect moment to reflect on the monumental changes our home underwent in the past year. Among all the transformations, the kitchen remodel stands out as the most significant undertaking – a project that began a full year ago and continues to evolve into the heart of our home. This detailed recap will walk you through the entire process, sharing the highs, the lows, the design evolution, and the practical challenges of creating a truly custom kitchen space. Join us as we recount the ambitious journey from a dated space to a functional, beautiful, and nearly complete dream kitchen.

Embarking on a kitchen renovation is more than just updating cabinets and countertops; it’s about reimagining a space central to family life, entertaining, and daily routines. Our goal was to not only enhance aesthetics but also dramatically improve functionality and flow within our entire living area. This renovation was born from a desire for an open-concept layout that would connect our kitchen directly to the living room, creating a more cohesive and inviting environment for everyone.

Phase 1: The Transformative Power of Demolition

Witnessing the Kitchen Demolition

Kitchen Demolition Phase

The exhilaration of tearing down the dividing wall was, without a doubt, the most thrilling moment of the entire year-long project. It wasn’t just a wall; it was a barrier that confined the kitchen, isolating it from the rest of the house. As the plaster and studs came down, an immediate sense of spaciousness and boundless possibility filled the air. This single act of demolition fundamentally altered the character of our home, instantly transforming a cramped layout into an expansive, open-plan area. The dusty aftermath was quickly overshadowed by the vision of a truly integrated living space.

With the physical constraints removed, the real design challenge began. We were now faced with a blank canvas, a daunting yet exciting prospect. The freedom to design without barriers meant meticulously considering every aspect of kitchen functionality and aesthetics. I immersed myself in the design process, meticulously drawing up almost twenty different layouts. This extensive exploration wasn’t excessive; it was essential. Each drawing represented a unique approach to optimizing flow, maximizing storage, integrating appliances seamlessly, and ensuring the new space would cater perfectly to our family’s needs. From various island configurations to appliance placements, every option was explored to ensure we landed on a design that was not just good, but exceptional.

Phase 2: Crafting the Vision – Initial Kitchen Design & Planning

Our initial vision came to life in what we dubbed “The Plan.”

Double island kitchen plan

This early design focused heavily on a robust appliance wall, a fixed element that provided a strong anchor for the entire kitchen. Its design was meticulously planned and executed with precision. However, the true test of any kitchen layout often comes when you start to physically occupy the space, even before construction is complete. A concept I swear by, and one you might recall from my post on planning and designing a built-in closet, is the invaluable practice of taping off your design on the floor. This method allows you to literally walk through your planned space, visualize traffic patterns, assess distances, and gain a tangible sense of how the layout will function. It’s a simple yet incredibly effective way to prevent costly mistakes and ensure your design truly works in practice.

We applied this ‘tape test’ rigorously to our proposed kitchen island. While the initial drawings looked promising, physically outlining the island with painter’s tape revealed some immediate concerns. The first island configuration, while ambitious, felt slightly off. It didn’t quite capture the natural flow we envisioned for the open space, and both Wes and I realized we didn’t “love” it as much as we thought we would. This critical realization, made before any permanent construction, highlighted the power of thorough planning and flexibility in the design phase.

Phase 3: Adapting and Perfecting the Kitchen Island Design

Tracking Our Home Renovation Progress

Undeterred by our initial island design’s shortcomings, we embraced the opportunity to refine our vision. We quickly moved to tape off an alternative island design, one that promised better circulation and a more harmonious integration into the broader living area. This second iteration immediately clicked. It offered improved workspace, clearer pathways, and a more inviting focal point for the kitchen. The decision was unanimous: this was the layout we had been searching for. This iterative design process, while adding a slight delay, proved invaluable, ensuring that the final result would be a space we genuinely adored and that functioned flawlessly.

This thoughtful revision led us to adopt The NEW Kitchen Plan, featuring an optimized island that promised both beauty and superior utility.

Phase 4: Overcoming Unexpected Challenges – A Personal Setback

An unforeseen detour: My Back Surgery

Surgery recovery phase

Just when the kitchen renovation was gaining momentum, life threw an unexpected curveball: I underwent back surgery. This significant personal setback brought the DIY aspects of the project to a grinding halt. For several weeks, I was under strict orders to avoid lifting anything over five pounds, gradually progressing to a ten-pound limit. This meant all hands-on DIY work, which is my passion, was entirely out of the question. It was a frustrating yet necessary pause, forcing me to delegate and trust others with tasks I typically would have tackled myself.

This period of recovery underscored the importance of a strong support system. I was incredibly fortunate to hire a couple of skilled handymen for some of the heavier work, but the true heroes were Wes and Madison. They stepped up magnificently, taking my detailed instructions and finishing the custom cabinet builds with remarkable precision and dedication. Their contribution during this challenging time was invaluable, keeping the project moving forward even when I couldn’t actively participate. This experience reinforced the collaborative spirit of home renovation and the resilience required to navigate unforeseen obstacles.

Phase 5: Key Milestones and Crafting Custom Elements

The Kitchen Island Takes Shape

With renewed energy and a solid team, progress accelerated. The custom kitchen island, the centerpiece of our revised design, truly began to take its impressive form. Watching it emerge from mere lumber and plans into a tangible structure was incredibly satisfying. This bespoke island was designed not just for aesthetics but for maximum utility, incorporating ample storage, seating, and a generous workspace.

The installation of our elegant White Granite Countertops was another pivotal moment.

The selection of countertops is a crucial decision in any kitchen, balancing durability, beauty, and cost. Our choice of white granite brought a bright, clean, and luxurious feel to the space, beautifully complementing the cabinet colors we had envisioned. Its natural patterns added texture and depth, elevating the overall design of the kitchen.

Several months post-surgery, with strength regained, I was thrilled to return to hands-on DIY work. The satisfaction of installing the kitchen backsplash myself was immense. This detail not only protected the walls but also added a significant aesthetic layer, tying together the various elements of the kitchen. Following this, I channeled my woodworking skills into building bespoke floating shelves. These shelves offered both practical storage and an opportunity to display decorative items, breaking up the expanse of cabinetry and adding a personalized touch to the space.

Phase 6: Expanding Beyond the Kitchen – Integrated Living Spaces

Kitchen Remodel Recap

The kitchen renovation spurred a ripple effect, inspiring further improvements to adjacent areas to ensure a cohesive aesthetic throughout our open-plan living space. This led to the creation of a custom pantry. Initially, I built a pantry that served its purpose, but as with many DIY projects, continuous evaluation led to refinements. I later decided to rebuild my pantry, optimizing its layout and storage capacity to better suit our evolving needs. This iterative process of building and refining is a testament to the nature of DIY – always striving for perfection and functionality.

In addition to the pantry, I crafted a charming window seat, providing a cozy nook and additional storage, and laid the base for a sophisticated china hutch, bridging the kitchen and living room seamlessly. These elements required careful planning and execution, including finishing some skim coating in the living room to ensure perfectly smooth walls that would complement the new built-ins. Each project, though seemingly small on its own, contributed significantly to the overall vision of an integrated, functional, and aesthetically pleasing home.

Phase 7: The “80% Done” Reality and Future Focus

A common truth in extensive home renovations is the “80% done” phenomenon. My philosophy often revolves around getting a space to a highly functional state, even if all the meticulous finishing touches aren’t yet in place, before moving on to address other critical areas of the house that have been causing frustration or inconvenience. Our home, a constant work in progress, often presents multiple challenges simultaneously, demanding a strategic approach to project management. This often means leaving a project, like our kitchen, at a very usable, albeit not entirely complete, stage to tackle another pressing issue elsewhere.

This pragmatic approach allows us to make consistent overall progress, even if it means some areas linger in a state of near-completion. For quite a few months, our kitchen has maintained this functional yet unfinished appearance while I diligently focused on completing other essential rooms. The images below capture the kitchen’s state for an extended period, reflecting the realities of a comprehensive whole-house renovation.

And indeed, this is still largely how it looks today – functional, beautiful in its core, but awaiting its final flourishes.

Phase 8: The Final Push – Completing Our Dream Kitchen in 2015

However, this “80% done” status is about to change dramatically! The kitchen has been prioritized as the very first project to bring to full completion in 2015. While it might seem like there’s not “too much” left to do, I know from experience that these final details often demand the most time, precision, and patience. The devil is truly in the details when striving for perfection in custom cabinetry.

The immediate tasks involve constructing two more vital cabinets: the upper sections for the integrated china hutch and the dedicated coffee station. These pieces are essential for completing the aesthetic and functional symmetry of the space. Following this, the most intricate and time-consuming stage awaits: building all the drawer fronts and doors. Given our chosen inset design, each door and drawer front must be crafted to fit absolutely perfectly within its frame, demanding an exceptional level of accuracy.

This “fiddle factor,” as I call it, means a meticulous process for every single door: precise measurement, careful cutting, repeated fitting, micro-trimming, extensive sanding to achieve a flawless finish, expert painting, and finally, delicate installation. It’s a journey that is undeniably tedious and demands painstaking attention to detail, which I admit is probably why it’s been subconsciously avoided for a while. But procrastination ends now. My firm goal is to have the kitchen fully completed by the end of January. The time for avoidance is over; it’s time to buckle down and finish what we started. It’s time to “Giddy-up!” and bring this spectacular kitchen renovation to its well-deserved conclusion.
