Recovering from the aftermath of a major home disaster, often dubbed a “sewer saga,” requires not just immediate fixes but also strategic, long-term solutions. My recent experience involved extensive damage, uncovering not only the direct impact of the sewer issues but also revealing existing problems like moldy drywall in my Jack and Jill Bathroom due to a leaky vent stack. This ordeal has made me incredibly grateful for every step I take towards a more resilient home. That’s why I’m particularly excited to be installing PURPLE XP® Drywall. Unlike conventional drywall, PURPLE XP® is engineered with a robust, thick paper on both sides of the gypsum core, specifically designed to resist moisture, mold, and mildew. This crucial upgrade offers not just a repair but a significant enhancement to my home’s durability and my peace of mind.

While I’m not yet ready to embark on a full-scale renovation of the entire “sewer zone,” dealing with the immediate chaos it unleashed is an absolute necessity. The comprehensive clean-out of a bedroom and closet for demolition left the rest of our basement in an unmanageable state. We managed to donate a truckload of items to Habitat ReStore and gifted several large pieces to friends furnishing their first home, but a significant amount of belongings still awaits proper storage. Our main basement area, typically reserved for workouts and relaxation, is currently so cluttered that reaching the exercise equipment or the sofa is a challenge.
This pressing need for organization has pushed a long-delayed project to the forefront: finishing a basement storage closet. This closet, framed nearly three years ago, now represents a crucial step towards reclaiming our living space and restoring order amidst the ongoing construction. It’s a foundational project that paves the way for greater progress.

At first glance, completing a storage closet might seem like an insignificant undertaking given the sheer scale of chaos engulfing my entire home. Indeed, almost every single room, save for Madison’s newly completed bedroom, is now in some phase of construction or disruption. Yet, this humble closet project holds immense importance for several compelling reasons:
- A Desperate Need for a “Win”: After enduring the stress and setbacks of the sewer disaster, securing even a small victory is vital for morale. Successfully completing this closet will provide a much-needed psychological boost, proving that progress, no matter how minor, is still possible. It’s a tangible sign that I can still accomplish my goals despite the overwhelming circumstances.
- Restoring Order to the Basement: The primary function of this closet is to provide much-needed storage for the displaced items from the “sewer zone.” This will help clear the main basement area, making it functional again for its intended purpose as a workout and TV space. An organized basement significantly reduces daily friction and improves overall quality of life.
- Unlocking Further Renovation Progress: This project is a critical domino in a larger chain of renovations. By creating storage in the basement, I can finally clear out the garage workshop, which is currently overflowing with items that need a home. A functional workshop is essential for building custom drawers and cabinetry, which are the final components needed to complete the Jack and Jill Bathroom renovation. This bathroom was agonizingly close to completion before my entire world was thrown into disarray by the sewer flood, making its completion an extremely high priority. Finishing it would be an enormous relief and a testament to perseverance.
So, the closet project is officially underway! The first and most critical step in bringing this long-awaited storage solution to life is the installation of PURPLE XP®Drywall. Choosing this specialized drywall is a deliberate decision, aligning with my goal of creating a resilient, mold-resistant space that won’t succumb to future moisture challenges, especially in a basement environment.

The majority of the drywall installation was a solo effort, a testament to determination and meticulous planning. However, certain stages, particularly those involving the heavier 5/8″ sheets for the ceiling, necessitated an extra pair of hands. Thankfully, I had a willing volunteer in Penny, who bravely stepped up to assist with the most challenging part of the process. Installing 5/8″ drywall is inherently more strenuous than working with 1/2″ sheets due to its increased weight and rigidity. Tackling ceiling installations further amplifies this difficulty, demanding precise positioning, sustained overhead effort, and careful maneuvering. It’s a task that truly pushes your physical limits.

This particular closet, measuring approximately 7’x7′, only required two sheets of drywall, which was a huge relief. Had it been a larger space, demanding a third round of our challenging ceiling installation process, I’m quite certain my arms would have completely given out. Despite the struggle, we persevered through the two necessary sheets, driven by the vision of a finished, functional space. The satisfaction of overcoming such a physically demanding task was immediate and profound.
Installing PURPLE XP Drywall on the Ceiling: A Step-by-Step Guide and the Challenges Involved
The process of installing the PURPLE XP Drywall on the ceiling, while arduous, was a systematic effort that highlights the teamwork and tools required for overhead work:
- Initial Lift and Prop: We began by carefully lifting one heavy sheet of drywall. The first strategic move was to prop one end of the sheet onto a sturdy ladder, providing a critical pivot point and taking some of the initial weight off our arms. This allowed us to reposition ourselves and prepare for the next stage.

- Elevating with a Taller Ladder: Next, Penny climbed her own ladder, which was slightly taller. From her elevated position, we coordinated to push the drywall sheet upwards, shifting its weight onto her ladder. This allowed the sheet to be held closer to the ceiling, further reducing the strain on our backs and arms and making the final lift more manageable.

- Final Positioning: With the drywall now securely propped and elevated, I ascended my ladder. Together, we performed the final lift, maneuvering the sheet precisely into its permanent position against the ceiling joists. This moment required coordination, strength, and careful alignment to ensure a flush fit.
- Securing with Screws and Leverage: Once in place, I held the heavy sheet above my head, maintaining pressure against the ceiling. Penny then carefully climbed down from her ladder, repositioned it for better leverage, and took over the task of supporting the drywall. This crucial swap allowed me to free up a hand and begin the process of securing the sheet with screws. The precise placement of screws, typically every 6-8 inches along the perimeter and field, is essential for a strong, lasting installation.

- The Advantage of Specialized Tools: This challenging task was made significantly easier by my DeWalt collated drywall screwgun. Its collated screw strips allowed for rapid, one-handed operation, meaning I didn’t have to fumble with individual screws while simultaneously supporting the heavy drywall sheet overhead. This tool was an absolute lifesaver, dramatically speeding up the fastening process and minimizing physical fatigue.

After completing the ceiling installation, I had to take a mandatory break to rest my arms. The exertion was immense, leaving my muscles thoroughly fatigued. However, the feeling of accomplishment was even greater. Knowing that we had conquered the most difficult part of the drywall installation filled me with a deep sense of satisfaction and renewed energy for the rest of the project.

With the most challenging ceiling panels in place, I was able to finish installing the remaining drywall on the walls by myself. Listening to music, I found a rhythm and focused on the meticulous process of measuring, cutting, and securing each panel. The walls, being less physically demanding than the ceiling, allowed for a more steady and contemplative pace, providing a much-needed sense of control and accomplishment. Each sheet carefully put into place felt like another step away from the recent chaos and towards a functional, beautiful home.

Every step of the drywall installation went remarkably smoothly after the ceiling was done, reinforcing my conviction that this project is indeed going to be the significant “win” I so desperately need. It’s more than just a storage closet; it’s a symbol of resilience and the first tangible step towards restoring order and joy to my home after weeks of stress and disruption.

This newly enclosed space, with its distinctive purple drywall, feels like my own special “TARDIS” – a small area that promises to hold much more within its walls, symbolizing the transformative power of a well-executed project. Despite my notorious struggles with predicting project timelines, I consistently set ambitious goals. While these often prove to be unrealistic, and I frequently miss them by a wide margin, they serve as powerful motivators. My competitive nature drives me to push boundaries and achieve results, even if the competition is solely with myself. These lofty targets inspire me to work harder and more efficiently, ultimately moving projects forward faster than if I had no deadlines at all.

For this closet, I set an ambitious goal: to not only install all the drywall but also to complete the first coat of mudding before the day was out. True to form, I found myself starting the mudding process late in the evening, around 10 PM. This dedication to finishing strong, even when tired, is what pushes these projects to completion.

For the mudding, I specifically chose ProForm®XP®Ready Mix with Dust-Tech®. This joint compound is a game-changer for anyone doing drywall finishing, especially in occupied spaces. Its unique formulation is designed to significantly reduce airborne dust during sanding. Unlike traditional compounds where dust disperses widely, Dust-Tech® ensures that particles are heavier and fall straight to the ground. This feature dramatically improves air quality, reduces cleanup time, and creates a much healthier working environment. Even when using a vacuum attachment with a sanding tool, the Dust-Tech® technology provides an extra layer of protection, making the entire finishing process more tolerable and efficient. It’s an investment in both the quality of the finish and the health of the DIYer.

To my pleasant surprise, the mudding process advanced much faster than anticipated, and I managed to complete the first coat well before midnight! While it will undoubtedly require additional coats for a perfectly smooth finish, achieving my specific goal for the day – completing the initial mud application – felt like a significant triumph. This swift progress was a true testament to the efficiency of the materials and my determined effort, solidifying this project as a definite win in my ongoing home renovation journey.
