Embarking on a home renovation journey is often portrayed with immaculate “before” and stunning “after” photos. However, the reality of living through a DIY project is a messy, chaotic, and often frustrating process that demands patience and perseverance. This past weekend, I dedicated my time to pushing forward on several home improvement endeavors, and while my house still resembles the aftermath of a small hurricane, significant progress was indeed made. This is the authentic DIY experience: periods of disarray dominating the majority of the timeline, followed by the eventual, often sudden, transformation into something truly amazing. Currently, I find myself approximately 50% complete on at least four or five projects, indicating I still have a considerable path ahead before reaching that gratifying sense of completion.
I’ve always believed in transparency when it comes to sharing my DIY adventures. It’s crucial not to set unrealistic expectations for anyone considering starting a home project. The glamour of the finished product often overshadows the immense amount of dust, disorder, and deliberate chaos that exists between the initial “before” snapshot and the final reveal. This blog aims to keep it real, offering an honest glimpse into the ongoing challenges and triumphs of a hands-on homeowner. So, for a dose of reality and a bit of fun, allow me to share some “in-between” photos. These snapshots serve as a reassuring reminder that the mess and disorganization during a major home remodel are not only normal but an integral part of the creative process.
Let’s dive into the current projects underway and the steps I’ve taken to transform my living space:
1. Custom Barn Door Installation for Wide Hallway

The first significant undertaking is the construction and installation of a custom barn door for my wide hallway. This hallway previously received a beautiful plank wall treatment, but the unfinished corners have been a lingering detail that I’m determined to address. Barn doors offer a fantastic blend of rustic charm and practical space-saving benefits, making them an ideal choice for this particular area of my home. The wood I purchased for this project is currently stored in my basement, allowing it to acclimate to the internal humidity levels of our home. This acclimatization period is vital to prevent warping and movement after construction, ensuring the door remains stable and beautiful for years to come. While ideally, the wood should rest for a few weeks, my schedule only allowed for about five days. Sometimes, you have to make do with what time you have!
Adding to the basement’s current “storage unit” aesthetic are my old kitchen cabinets. These units are being stored until I make a final decision on whether to sell them or repurpose them in another area of the house. For now, they occupy a substantial quarter of the basement, a testament to the ongoing nature of renovation and the constant shuffle of materials and belongings.
2. Enhancing Kitchen Functionality with Drawer Organizers
A truly gratifying milestone achieved recently was the installation of several kitchen drawer organizers. This might seem like a minor detail, but anyone who has struggled with disorganized kitchen drawers knows the immense impact it has on daily life. Last weekend marked the successful integration of these essential inserts, instantly transforming six previously chaotic drawers into highly functional storage spaces. The difference is night and day, making kitchen tasks more efficient and enjoyable. The smooth glides on these drawers deserve a dedicated post of their own, as their quality and functionality are truly exceptional. I have another seven drawer units on order, and with each installation, our kitchen is progressively moving towards optimal functionality. This phased approach to kitchen organization is steadily improving our home’s overall efficiency and making life considerably more pleasant. Efficient kitchen storage isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about creating a harmonious and stress-free environment where every utensil and ingredient has its rightful place.
3. Resolving Hallway Lighting & Safety Issues
Sometimes, the smallest details can become the longest-standing problems in a DIY home. About six months ago, I renovated the planking on this particular hallway ceiling. In the process, I misplaced the small components, often called “Doohickies” in DIY jargon, that secure the light fixture to the ceiling brace. Consequently, the light fixture has been dangling precariously for half a year. This weekend, I decided it was time to put an end to this minor but persistent nuisance. A trip to Home Depot was in order to find suitable replacements. I discovered a bag of six bright brass mounting clips for a mere $3. However, rather than buying those and having to modify their color to match my existing hardware, and then inevitably misplacing the spares, I opted for a new light fixture that cost $5. This new fixture came with the correctly colored mounting clips, solving the problem efficiently and economically. Plus, who knows, in another decade, I might stumble upon this old light fixture and conjure up an exciting new DIY project for it!
In addition to securing the light, I also addressed another long-standing issue: a dangling smoke detector. For just as long as the light, the smoke detector had also been hanging loose, serving no real purpose other than to keep the light fixture company. Ensuring safety devices are properly installed is paramount, and it feels good to have both the light and the smoke detector firmly in place, contributing to both the aesthetics and safety of the home.
4. Crafting a Multi-functional Kitchen Entrance “Drop Station”
The concept of a “drop station” or mudroom bench near an entryway is invaluable for maintaining home organization. It provides a designated space for shoes, bags, keys, and mail, preventing clutter from spreading throughout the house. This weekend, I embarked on building my custom kitchen entrance drop station. The process began with drawing up detailed plans and a visit to Home Depot to procure the necessary lumber. I had the store cut the initial pieces, hoping to save time, but as often happens in DIY, adjustments were needed. Upon returning home, I realized the cuts weren’t quite right for my refined vision, necessitating a redraw of my plans to accommodate new dimensions and then re-cutting every piece myself. This iterative process of planning, building, and adjusting is very common in custom DIY projects.
What I’m currently constructing might look like a simple bench, and indeed, it will serve as a bench. However, its true potential goes far beyond a mere seating area. This drop station is being designed with multiple functions in mind, aiming to streamline our daily routines and enhance the entryway’s utility. I’m excited to share all the intricate details of its design and functionality once the project is closer to completion. Entryway organization is often overlooked, but a well-designed drop zone can significantly reduce daily stress and improve the overall tidiness of a home.
5. Preparing Our Home for a New Puppy’s Arrival
As some of you may already know from Madison’s insightful post about creative DIY dog beds, our family is eagerly anticipating the arrival of a new puppy! While undertaking numerous home projects, it’s easy for clutter to accumulate almost imperceptibly until a specific reason compels a thorough assessment and cleanup. Usually, that reason is the impending arrival of guests from outside our immediate family. We typically engage in a frantic scramble to clean up, and for a few days afterward, it feels wonderfully organized – until the inevitable return to delightful chaos. However, with “Little Puppy” soon joining our family, there’s a more personal and critical reason to get things in order: creating a clean, safe, and stress-free environment for her arrival.
During the extensive kitchen remodel, our dining room table has been repurposed as a central workstation, covered with blankets, a sheet of plywood, and insulation to protect it. My collection of tools had temporarily settled in a corner of the living room, transforming what should be a comfortable relaxation space into a mini-workshop. Our home had truly not been the most pleasant or organized place to live for quite some time.
The impending arrival of the puppy provided the perfect motivation for a significant cleanup and reorganization effort. We needed to prepare her dedicated area and ensure the house was tidy enough to minimize stress for both the new addition and our family. This massive undertaking involved shifting our temporary work zones. The dining room has now become my designated “tool home” and temporary indoor workshop, consolidating the renovation-related mess to one area. Consequently, the living room has been largely cleared, now only cluttered with “normal” household items – primarily an abundance of couch pillows and various dog toys. It’s a constant mystery to me why those couch pillows can never seem to stay put on the sofa!
Seriously, as if there isn’t already enough delightful chaos in our lives with ongoing DIY projects, a new puppy, and the eternal battle against rogue couch cushions. Yet, despite the never-ending to-do list and the intermittent mess, every step forward is genuine progress. This journey of transforming a house into a home, filled with personal touches and tangible improvements, is incredibly rewarding. Ultimately, life is good, and the satisfaction derived from creating and improving our living space is immeasurable.
