Building a home is a journey filled with both challenges and immense satisfaction, especially when it comes to customizing spaces to perfectly suit your needs. Today, we’re diving into a crucial project for our guest bedrooms: designing and installing bespoke wardrobe cabinets. Our goal was to transform two relatively small guest bedrooms into inviting and highly functional spaces, ensuring our visitors enjoy maximum comfort during their stay. The existing closet situations in these rooms were disproportionate, and we envisioned a solution that would not only provide ample storage but also integrate seamlessly with the room’s aesthetics. By opting for custom-built wardrobes, we achieved a smart balance: optimized storage within the bedrooms and the flexibility to allocate more space to an adjoining larger bathroom, a perfect setup for guests who appreciate comfort but aren’t planning to move in. 😉

Designing Custom Wardrobe Cabinets for Ultimate Guest Comfort
When planning for guest spaces, functionality and a welcoming atmosphere are paramount. Our Guest Bedroom 2 features two distinct wardrobe cabinets, each meticulously designed to be 32 inches wide and stretch an impressive 9 feet tall. While the bedrooms themselves are modest in size, these new closet dimensions are perfectly proportionate, offering significant storage without overwhelming the room. The decision to create smaller, yet highly efficient, closet footprints allowed us to reallocate valuable square footage, contributing to a more spacious and luxurious guest bathroom experience. This thoughtful design ensures that our guests have plenty of room for their belongings, all while maintaining the open, inviting feel of the bedroom.
The journey to creating these built-in wardrobes began with careful consideration of every detail. From the initial measurements to the final finishes, each step was executed with precision and a clear vision for the end result. We aimed for a solution that felt integrated, not merely added, reflecting the custom craftsmanship throughout our home. The benefits of custom cabinetry extend beyond mere storage; it’s about maximizing every inch, reflecting personal style, and enhancing the overall value and comfort of your home. These wardrobes are not just storage units; they are a testament to efficient design and a commitment to hospitality, ensuring our guests feel truly at home.
Building the Foundation: Sturdy Bases and Tailored Toe Kicks
Every successful build starts with a solid foundation, and these custom wardrobe cabinets are no exception. Each cabinet proudly rests on a robust 2×6 base, providing exceptional stability and elevation. This choice was deliberate, allowing us to incorporate custom toe kicks that are taller than standard. Why taller? Because our home features elegant, tall baseboards, and I wanted a cohesive, uninterrupted visual line around the room. This seemingly small detail significantly contributes to the built-in, furniture-grade appearance of the wardrobes, making them feel like an integral part of the room’s architecture rather than standalone pieces.

The construction of these bases involves precise cuts and secure fastening, ensuring they are perfectly level and plumb before any cabinet boxes are introduced. This initial accuracy is critical; any imperfections here would compound as the build progressed. The 2×6 lumber provides not just height but also a sturdy platform capable of supporting the weight of the large cabinet boxes, the contents within, and the upper units. It’s a foundational element that underpins both the structural integrity and the aesthetic appeal of the entire wardrobe system.
Constructing the Main Wardrobe Cabinets: A Study in Functionality
Our guest bedroom storage solution comprises two primary cabinet sections, each tailored to specific storage needs. The left wardrobe is a single, generously sized cabinet, boasting a depth of 25 inches. This substantial depth is ideal for hanging clothes, providing ample space for garments to hang freely without being crushed or wrinkled, a common issue with shallower closets. This full-depth section is perfect for dresses, suits, and jackets, offering guests the luxury of unpacking and organizing their attire with ease.

Constructing such large cabinet boxes, especially those designed for built-in applications, presents its own set of logistical challenges. Maneuvering these substantial units through doorways and into their precise locations requires careful planning, patience, and often, a little bit of creative problem-solving. This isn’t my first rodeo, and I’ve come to expect that nothing in custom woodworking is ever “easy.” Each installation presents a unique puzzle, but with experience, you learn to anticipate and overcome these hurdles.

Once the cabinets are positioned, securing them firmly to the wall studs is paramount for safety and stability. For this critical step, my trusty Zircon stud finder proved invaluable. Scanning through the cabinet back, it allowed me to mark the exact locations for driving 3-inch cabinet screws, ensuring each fastener hit a stud dead center. There’s nothing more frustrating than eyeballing a mark on the wall, attempting to line it up from inside the cabinet, and then missing the stud. Precision here prevents wasted effort and guarantees a secure installation that will stand the test of time.

A fundamental rule in cabinet installation, which cannot be overstated, is to always ensure your cabinets are perfectly level and plumb before securing them to the wall studs. Even the slightest deviation can cause issues down the line with doors, drawers, and overall aesthetics. This often involves shimming and careful adjustments, but the effort is well worth it for a professional and functional finish.

Layering Storage: Upper Cabinets and Strategic Spacers
With the lower main cabinets securely in place, the next phase involved adding the upper cabinet sections. This step required careful measurement to account for both the height of the top cabinet itself and the critical spacing for future crown molding, as well as the deliberate gaps between the two cabinet units. This tiered approach maximizes vertical storage, reaching nearly to the ceiling, which is especially beneficial in smaller bedrooms.

Compared to the large base units, building the smaller upper cabinet boxes felt like a breeze. It was the easiest part of the day, a welcome reprieve from the heavy lifting and precise maneuvering of the larger components.

However, getting even these “little” cabinets settled precisely into their designated upper positions proved to be the most challenging task of that particular day. It’s a testament to the fact that every step in a custom build can present its own unique difficulties, regardless of the size of the component.

To achieve the desired aesthetic and structural integrity, I utilized 2×4 blocks as deliberate spacers between the lower and upper cabinets. The primary reason for this was to create a roughly 3-inch wide rail in the forthcoming faceframe. This specific width was chosen to harmonize with the overall design and proportions of the cabinetry, contributing to a refined, built-in appearance.

With all sections aligned and carefully positioned, the cabinets were then securely fastened to each other and, crucially, to the wall studs. This comprehensive securing process ensures the entire wardrobe system is robust, stable, and immovable, ready to serve our guests for years to come. The result is a seamless, integrated storage solution that looks and feels like it was always meant to be part of the room.

The Right Wardrobe: A Tale of Precision, Persistence, and a Little Slip-Up
Moving to the right side of the guest bedroom, the design for this cabinet was focused on a different kind of storage: shelves and drawers. This unit is intentionally shallower, at 18 inches deep, making it perfect for folded clothing, accessories, and other items best stored in compartments. It features a fixed shelf in the middle, dividing it into an upper section for additional shelving and a lower section designed for a series of functional drawers.
Building this final cabinet section for the entire bathroom project presented an unexpected challenge. I ran out of hardboard backing – needing just one more sheet. A quick trip to town solved the shortage, but upon returning to the workshop, a momentary lapse in concentration led to cutting the hardboard exactly 1 inch too narrow. In the world of custom cabinetry, such a mistake can often mean scrapping the piece and starting over. However, given it was the very last piece and I had just enough margin, I decided to make it work. With careful angling of my staples, I managed to secure the backing, leaving a narrow 1/4 inch grip on each side.
Miraculously, not a single staple ended up poking through into the cabinet opening! It was a small victory, a reminder that sometimes, even when things go awry, a bit of ingenuity and careful execution can turn a potential disaster into a perfectly functional outcome. It just goes to show that not everything has to be perfectly easy to work out.

This 18-inch deep cabinet, with its thoughtful internal division, provides versatile storage options for guests. The upper shelves are perfect for towels, linens, or bulkier clothing, while the planned drawers below will offer organized space for smaller items, keeping the room tidy and clutter-free. This combination ensures every type of guest belonging has its designated spot.

Just like its counterpart, getting the small, upper cabinet for this section into its final position presented its own set of difficulties. Despite its size, the precision required for alignment and secure fastening made it quite a challenging maneuver. (Seriously, the video below offers a great perspective on these installation challenges!)

Internal Organization and Faceframe Precision
Once the main cabinet boxes were installed, attention turned to the internal organization of the drawer section. I added vertical cleats precisely in the middle of the lower section, creating two distinct columns for drawers. This design allows for a balanced and highly functional drawer system, offering customizable storage for a variety of items. The precision of these cleats is crucial for the smooth operation and alignment of the future drawers.

Even with careful planning, sometimes mistakes happen. I encountered problems with mis-measuring on this particular cabinet section, leading to some frustration. To correct it, I cut two additional cleats at the right height, effectively doubling them up, and then secured them to the cabinet. While this “screw-up” doesn’t affect the structural integrity or ultimate functionality of the cabinet, it’s the kind of minor imperfection that can irritate a detail-oriented builder. It’s a common DIY reality, and learning to adapt and find solutions is part of the process.

The final structural step for the cabinet boxes involved attaching the faceframes. Since I plan to add elegant inset doors and drawer fronts, it was absolutely critical to ensure that everything was perfectly square during this process. Inset cabinetry demands meticulous precision; even a slight deviation can result in gaps, misaligned doors, or drawers that bind. This stage requires patience, precise clamping, and careful fastening to achieve a professional, high-end finish that will truly make these custom wardrobes shine.

The Finishing Line: Sanding, Priming, Painting, and Beyond
With the physical construction of the wardrobe cabinets now complete, the project moves into its final, transformative phase: sanding, priming, and painting. However, these steps are part of a larger, coordinated effort to refresh the entire guest bedroom. We’re adding beautiful planking to the walls, and the most efficient approach is to spray everything – the cabinets and the new wall planking – at once. This strategy ensures a consistent finish, saves time, and minimizes cleanup, resulting in a cohesive and professionally painted room.
