Maryville House Tour: Master Bathroom Oasis

Every home has that one room, the last frontier of a renovation project, often saved for its sheer dauntingness or lack of immediate appeal. For us, in the Maryville house, that room was undeniably the master bathroom. It wasn’t just dated; it was a relic from a bygone era, an unfortunate time capsule within an otherwise beautifully refreshed home. While my initial inclination wasn’t to undertake a full-scale renovation, especially when preparing to sell, the undeniable truth was that the master bathroom holds immense power in captivating potential buyers’ emotions. The rest of the house shimmered with modern elegance, but this single room stood out like a sore thumb, screaming for a complete overhaul. It had to be done, not just for aesthetics, but for the home’s overall value and market appeal.

So, with a renewed sense of purpose and against an incredibly tight deadline, my incredible partner Julie and I plunged into what would become one of our most challenging, yet ultimately rewarding, projects. We crushed this renovation in a mind-blowing record time of just three weeks! The exhilaration of completing such an intensive project, especially one that felt so pivotal to the entire house’s transformation, was immense. Surviving the completion of this house, particularly with this bathroom, felt like a true triumph. We transformed a tired, cramped space into a luxurious, spa-like sanctuary, proving that even the most outdated rooms can be reborn with vision and hard work.

Before and After: A Dramatic Master Bathroom Transformation

The stark contrast between the “before” and “after” states of our master bathroom is truly remarkable. Prior to the renovation, the space was characterized by its cramped layout, dark and outdated finishes, and a general lack of functionality. The original design choices, prevalent in homes from the 1980s, contributed to a heavy and enclosed atmosphere that simply didn’t align with modern living or the refreshed aesthetic of the rest of our home. Imagine walking into a room that felt more like a utility closet than a relaxing retreat, with every element from the flooring to the fixtures visibly past its prime. It was a space that actively deterred relaxation and convenience, making it a priority to address before listing the property.

Now, step into the “after” picture, and you’re greeted with an entirely different experience. The once-cramped room has blossomed into an expansive, light-filled oasis, boasting sleek modern lines, sophisticated finishes, and a serene ambiance. Every element was carefully selected to maximize both visual space and practical functionality, turning a major drawback into one of the home’s most appealing features. The transformation is more than just cosmetic; it’s a complete reimagining of the space, designed to enhance daily routines and elevate the overall living experience. This dramatic metamorphosis truly showcases the power of strategic renovation and thoughtful design in creating a bathroom that buyers dream of.

Master Bathroom Renovation: From Dated to Dreamy in Three Weeks

Our master bathroom renovation was a whirlwind of activity, meticulously planned and executed with military precision to meet our ambitious three-week deadline. The journey began with the most satisfying, yet physically demanding, phase: demolition. My wonderful friends, Chantel and Matt, became invaluable allies, joining me in the arduous task of liberating the space from its antiquated fixtures. Together, we tackled the removal of the cumbersome built-in bathtub, the bulky old cabinets, and the dated floor tiles, literally stripping the room back to its bare bones. One particularly memorable challenge was the granite countertop – a beast weighing approximately 500 lbs! It took a combined effort, enlisting the help of our kind neighbors, to carefully maneuver it out of the house. In a stroke of luck, one of those neighbors actually wanted the old cabinets and countertop, saving us the hassle and expense of disposal – a win-win situation we celebrated heartily, as my alternative plan involved a simple “free” sign on the curb!

Beyond simply removing the old, the demolition phase presented an opportunity for a fundamental layout improvement. A crucial strategic decision involved tearing out a section of the wall between the master closet and the bathroom. Previously, a poorly positioned door, flush against the side wall, opened directly into the bathroom, creating a significant amount of dead and wasted space. This awkward doorway, combined with the original cabinetry that spanned only about two-thirds of the room, resulted in a glaring five feet of unusable wall space. Not only did this arrangement make the double vanity feel incredibly cramped, with the sinks uncomfortably close, but one sink was also positioned directly in front of the shower door. While thankfully I never smacked anyone, the potential for a collision and the sheer inefficiency of the layout constantly bugged me. It was clear this configuration was a major contributing factor to the bathroom’s claustrophobic feel.

Wall demolition for master bathroom layout change

Adding to the list of spatial inefficiencies was the original bathtub. The builder had framed it into a massive, elevated platform that aggressively protruded into what was already a narrow walkway. This design choice severely restricted movement and further exacerbated the feeling of being confined. Compounding the issue, the tile work surrounding this behemoth of a tub screamed “1980s,” a visual anachronism that desperately needed to go. It was not just an aesthetic flaw; it was a functional impediment, stealing precious floor space and making the entire bathroom feel overwhelmingly crowded. So, with no regrets, we tore it all out, eager to reclaim every inch of the room and pave the way for a truly modern and spacious design.

The decision to shift the doorway by approximately 20 inches proved to be a game-changer for the new layout. This seemingly minor adjustment unlocked the entire wall for continuous cabinetry, finally allowing us to install a double vanity with ample space between the sinks. This crucial step, however, necessitated relocating the plumbing lines, a task that required the expertise of our phenomenal plumber. Luckily, we have an incredible professional who always manages to fit us into his busy schedule. He even graciously came over on Mother’s Day, with his wife’s full approval, to complete the rough-in plumbing, ensuring our renovation stayed on track. His flexibility and dedication were absolutely essential to the project’s success.

In a renovation with such a tight timeline, meticulous coordination and precise timing were everything. The sequence of tasks was critical: the floor tile had to be laid before the new soaking tub could be installed, and the shower connections needed to be finalized before we could close up the walls. A key design element I was keen to incorporate was board and batten wainscoting, and it was imperative to install this before the tub went in. Attempting to install and paint around a newly placed tub would have been an incredibly difficult and time-consuming endeavor. Our plumber, a true partner in this project, was incredibly understanding and supportive of my plan to get the wainscoting up first. He skillfully completed the shower connections, then moved on to other essential tasks like hooking up the loft sinks, allowing me a crucial window. During this time, I installed the drywall and the foundational pieces of the wainscoting. This thoughtful collaboration made my job significantly easier, though I still had to contort myself into some tight spots to install the rails and stiles. To save even more time and effort in those confined areas, I had the foresight to prime and paint all the wainscoting pieces beforehand, minimizing paint work in the tiny, awkward spaces.

Given our strict time constraints, the choice of cabinetry was an easy one: IKEA. Known for their ready-to-assemble systems and modern aesthetics, IKEA cabinets offered the perfect blend of style, quality, and quick availability. A huge shout-out goes to Madison, who selflessly drove three and a half hours each way to Atlanta to pick up our cabinet order, a monumental task that saved us invaluable time. The photo above captures the bathroom literally days before our scheduled photographer’s visit to capture images for the listing. We had already postponed the shoot two or three times, underscoring the immense pressure we were under to get everything absolutely perfect and completed on time.

The final push was a testament to incredible teamwork and dedication. Chantel became our cabinet assembly pro, expertly putting together all the IKEA units. Julie, with her meticulous eye, took charge of tiling the shower, transforming it into a stunning focal point. I juggled the installation and painting of the wainscoting and trim, adding those crucial architectural details. And in a surprising, yet incredibly appreciated move, Madison, who typically shies away from this kind of work, stepped up to paint the water closet! Her willingness to help was a huge boost, especially since her university semester had just ended, granting her some much-needed free time. She drove an hour each way almost every single day for two weeks, pitching in wherever she could. This collective effort, fueled by determination and strong coffee, was the secret to our swift success.

And with an incredible surge of collaborative energy and relentless effort, we got it done! The transformation was nothing short of miraculous, a testament to what a dedicated team can achieve under pressure.

Bathroom Reveal: A Modern, Spacious Master Retreat

The completed master bathroom stands as a shining example of thoughtful design and efficient execution. One of the most impactful changes was to the shower. We strategically narrowed the shower entry and raised the threshold, allowing us to create a seamless walk-in shower without the need for a door. This design choice was particularly suited for our galley-style bathroom, which features entrances on both ends, as a swinging door would have awkwardly obstructed the main walkway. While we maintained the original footprint of the shower, Julie, with her incredible tiling skills, completely reimagined it from the ground up, resulting in a truly gorgeous, spa-like enclosure. We upgraded all the fixtures, including the addition of a convenient handheld shower, a luxury we had surprisingly lived without for eight years with the old shower setup. This new design not only enhances accessibility but also contributes significantly to the bright and open aesthetic we aimed for.

Replacing the bulky, builder-grade jetted tub—which protruded into the pathway by about five inches—with a sleek, modern soaking tub dramatically transformed the perception of space in the room. This change alone made the bathroom feel immeasurably more expansive and luxurious. Interestingly, this beautiful soaking tub was actually “borrowed” from my new house; it wouldn’t have found a permanent home there anyway, as we plan to add a dedicated master wing with a different bathroom configuration. Its presence here not only elevates the design but also offers a deep, relaxing bathing experience, a far cry from its cramped predecessor.

Another strategic element that played a crucial role in enhancing the spacious feel was our choice of IKEA cabinets. These particular units are only 19 inches deep, a significant five inches shallower than the typical 24-inch bathroom vanity. This thoughtful selection instantly freed up valuable floor space, making the galley bathroom feel much wider and more navigable. For the drawer fronts, I opted for a style that was new to me, Resjön White. What makes these fronts truly special is their tactile texture – it’s not merely an optical illusion but a genuine, subtle pattern that adds depth and character to the otherwise clean, modern aesthetic. To complement these sleek cabinets, we chose the Modern Edge – 12 1/8″ Long Edge Pull in Polished Chrome, expertly supplied by Liberty Hardware. These minimalist pulls integrate seamlessly into the design, providing functionality without visual clutter, perfectly aligning with our bright and open design philosophy.

Our collaboration with Liberty Hardware was instrumental in outfitting this bathroom renovation with high-quality, stylish accents. They generously supplied all our hardware needs, ensuring a cohesive and sophisticated look throughout the space. In addition to the sleek drawer pulls we selected for the vanity, we incorporated their elegant Ara robe hooks, which offer a perfect blend of form and function. For towel storage, the Ara 30″ Single Towel Bar was the ideal choice, providing ample space for bath towels while maintaining the minimalist aesthetic. Each piece from Liberty Hardware contributed to the overall sense of refined elegance, demonstrating how carefully chosen details can elevate a bathroom’s design to new heights.

Our overarching design goal for this master bathroom was to create a bright and open sanctuary. Given the inherently galley-style layout, which isn’t huge, it was paramount to employ strategies that maximized both visual and perceived space. The key elements to achieving this desired aesthetic included a light color palette for the walls and tiles, ensuring an abundance of natural and artificial light, and minimizing visual clutter. We intentionally chose light paint colors that reflect light, making the room feel larger and airier. Initially, I had planned to build a center tower cabinet between the two sink vanities for additional storage. However, due to the tight timeline and our desire to maintain an unobstructed view, we pivoted. Instead, we sent Penny and Madison on a fun shopping excursion to find a decorative storage item that would fit perfectly in that central space. They returned with a fantastic towel ladder – which, while perhaps originally intended as a blanket ladder, serves its purpose beautifully by holding towels and contributing to the open, airy feel. This creative solution perfectly encapsulated our commitment to functional elegance and efficient space utilization.

As always, it’s truly all in the details, isn’t it? Even in the smaller, often-overlooked spaces, thoughtful selections can make a significant impact. Liberty Hardware’s Ara collection impressed us with its comprehensive range, including a sleek flush handle that we absolutely had to incorporate. For the water closet, our updates were kept intentionally simple yet effective: a fresh coat of paint to brighten the space and the installation of a decorative shelf to hold essential “supplies.” While it might just be a water closet, these small touches contribute to the overall cohesive and refined feel of the entire master bathroom, proving that no area is too small to deserve a touch of style.

One particular element where I chose to truly splurge, and have absolutely no regrets, was on the lighted mirrors. These mirrors are a game-changer; they don’t just provide excellent task lighting, but they genuinely make you look amazing, offering a flattering glow that enhances your reflection. The sophisticated ambiance and practical benefits they provide are unmatched, instantly elevating the entire vanity area. I am so enamored with their effect that I’ve already decided lighted mirrors will be a non-negotiable feature in all my future bathroom renovations. They represent the perfect blend of modern luxury and functional design, contributing significantly to the high-end feel of the space and creating a truly delightful experience for anyone using the vanity.

The final result of our master bathroom renovation is nothing short of absolutely beautiful. Looking back, I can still hardly believe that we managed to pull off such an extensive and detailed transformation in a mere three weeks! It was a project that pushed us to our limits, but the outcome speaks for itself. There’s a bittersweet sadness for Wes and me, knowing we lived in this house for eight years without the luxury of this stunning bathroom. Like so many other rooms in the Maryville house that only reached their full potential just before we prepared to move out, this magnificent bathroom will be enjoyed by its new owners, rather than us. However, I continuously reassure Wes that I will design and build an even more incredible version of whatever room we’re discussing in our next home. That’s a promise I’m excited to keep, especially since our new house, affectionately described as “campy,” will present its own unique set of renovation challenges and opportunities. This master bathroom journey truly caps off the Maryville house tour with a flourish, and I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who followed along. Next time I post, I’ll be thrilled to share glimpses of my new house and/or my new workshop, embarking on fresh adventures in home transformation!
