Maryville House: The Guest Wing Unveiled

Welcome to a guided tour of our meticulously crafted guest wing, a sanctuary of comfort and style that branches off from the main living area, conveniently situated beside the custom-built bookshelf and integrated dog crate. This thoughtfully designed section of our home offers a private retreat for visitors, encompassing two distinct yet equally inviting small bedrooms and a functional Jack-and-Jill bathroom. The journey into this serene space begins with a captivating hallway, promising a blend of unique design elements and practical solutions that define our approach to home renovation and interior aesthetics.

The inviting hallway, adorned with striking shiplap detailing, features a trio of doors, each leading to a unique and expertly designed space. As you proceed, the first door on your right introduces you to the sophisticated powder room – a space that truly embodies a remarkable transformation and showcases our innovative design philosophy. This hallway serves not just as a passageway, but as an integral part of the guest experience, setting the tone for the carefully curated rooms that lie beyond.

Luxurious Powder Room Transformation

For those who followed the early days of this house’s renovation journey, you might recall the audacious placement of a bathtub conspicuously protruding into the living room. A decision that left many, including myself, pondering its original intent. However, in our comprehensive re-imagining of the space, we made a bold and transformative choice: to reclaim portions of the living room and an awkward corner closet. This strategic realignment allowed us to integrate a full, luxurious shower into what was originally conceived as just a powder room, drastically enhancing its functionality and appeal.

My vision for this revamped space was nothing short of “glamorous,” and I believe we achieved just that. Every element was carefully selected to create an atmosphere of refined elegance. A truly unique feature, and one of my favorites, is the custom decorative floor pattern. This intricate design, which I meticulously laid out, adds an unexpected artistic flair and a playful sophistication that instantly elevates the room. It was a project undertaken purely for the joy of creative expression, and the results speak for themselves.

Typically, I’m not one for wallpaper, preferring painted surfaces or architectural details. But upon encountering this particular tree-themed wallpaper, I was captivated. Its intricate design and distinctive character were unlike anything I had seen, making it impossible to pass up. The serene arboreal motif not only introduced an element of nature indoors but, serendipitously, perfectly complemented a beloved painting I already owned, creating a cohesive and deeply personal aesthetic. This powder room now stands as a testament to creative risk-taking and the beautiful outcomes that can emerge when design boundaries are pushed.

The Enchanting Vintage Glam Bedroom

At the very end of our inviting guest wing hallway awaits a truly captivating space we affectionately call the “Pretty Bedroom.” This room was a delightful collaborative venture for Julie and me, offering us a wonderful opportunity to delve into and explore alternative decorating styles. For this particular bedroom, we embraced the sophisticated charm of vintage glam, aiming to create a luxurious yet approachable aesthetic that feels both nostalgic and utterly contemporary.

One of the central pieces in this exquisite room is the bed, which boasts a remarkable transformation. It’s the same piece that once served as Julie’s utilitarian black trundle bed. Through a dedicated process of rejuvenation, we gave it a new lease on life, perfectly aligning it with the room’s vintage glam theme. If you’re curious about the detailed steps behind this fascinating bed upcycle project, I highly recommend checking out the dedicated post for an inspiring before-and-after perspective.

To truly imbue the space with the authentic essence of vintage glam, we embarked on several treasure hunts to various local thrift stores. This enjoyable pursuit allowed us to unearth unique decorative pieces that possessed character and history, perfectly complementing our design vision. Our persistence paid off when we discovered a sweet, understated vanity. While initially quite short, we saw its potential and extended its legs, transforming it into a functional and stylish focal point. The full details of this creative process are documented in my dedicated vanity makeover post, showcasing how a little ingenuity can breathe new life into forgotten furniture.

Beyond the decorative elements, functionality and clever space utilization were also paramount. This room presented a charming, albeit somewhat challenging, little alcove. Recognizing its potential, I custom crafted a sleek curved floating desk, complemented by bespoke shelves above it. This built-in solution not only maximized the use of an otherwise awkward space but also provided a stylish and ergonomic workstation, seamlessly integrating into the room’s elegant aesthetic. Building this piece was a gratifying experience, allowing for a perfect fit and finish that truly makes the room feel complete and tailored.

The Revitalized Urban Organic Guest Bedroom

Stepping into the second guest bedroom reveals a space that has undergone a truly remarkable metamorphosis, looking completely different from its appearance when we first moved in. Our goal for this room was to create an inviting atmosphere that blends natural elements with contemporary urban flair, resulting in what we affectionately termed an “urban organic” look. This involved a meticulous selection of textures, materials, and a serene color palette that evokes both tranquility and modern sophistication. We firmly believe we’ve hit the mark, crafting a space that is both visually appealing and incredibly comfortable for any guest.

As with many of the rooms throughout this home, I prioritized adding architectural character through custom moldings and planks on the ceiling. These details lend a sense of bespoke craftsmanship and depth that elevates the entire room. With Julie’s invaluable assistance and keen eye for styling, we meticulously curated every element, from textiles to decorative accents, to perfectly encapsulate the urban organic aesthetic. The collaboration ensured that both the structural enhancements and the decorative touches worked harmoniously to create a cohesive and stylish retreat.

A highlight of this bedroom is the pair of DIY bedside tables that Julie and I crafted together. These pieces remain favorites of ours, not just for their functional elegance but also for the incredible sense of accomplishment they represent. The fact that each table cost me approximately $20 to make adds another layer of satisfaction, proving that beautiful, custom furniture doesn’t always have to come with a hefty price tag. Their simple, clean lines perfectly complement the urban organic vibe, providing practical surfaces without cluttering the aesthetic.

In a major structural reconfiguration, I completely tore out and re-imagined the adjacent bathroom wall, allowing for the creation of innovative built-in features within this guest room. This extensive work enabled me to carve out a dedicated desk niche, thoughtfully designed to mirror a similar feature in Madison’s room, thus maintaining design continuity across different areas of the home. Furthermore, I integrated a custom built-in wardrobe directly into the wall, providing ample and discreet storage. Interestingly, the back half of this wardrobe cleverly houses the built-in linen closet, accessible from the Jack-and-Jill bathroom right through the connecting door, demonstrating highly efficient space planning and dual functionality.

Innovative Jack and Jill Bathroom Design

Our Jack and Jill bathroom, a vital component of the guest wing, has largely been completed for some time, with the final touch being the installation of its mirror. This particular mirror required a custom cut to perfectly fit the unique dimensions of the space, a small detail that made a significant difference in the overall aesthetic. Julie and Madison, our resident experts in comfort and style, had the pleasure of enjoying this exceptional bathroom for a brief period before our move, and it’s safe to say, it left quite an impression. Without boasting too much, I genuinely believe this might be the most storage-friendly Jack and Jill bathroom I’ve ever encountered. Every inch was designed with efficiency and elegance in mind, ensuring maximum utility without sacrificing style.

Indeed, the bathroom was perfect in every aspect, save for the critical absence of a mirror. I embarked on a tireless search for a suitable off-the-shelf option, but after countless unsuccessful attempts, I decided to take matters into my own hands and fabricate one. My initial intention was to construct an elaborate frame to house the mirror. However, as our plans shifted towards preparing the house for sale, I made the pragmatic decision to “finish to sell” – prioritizing speed and simplicity. Consequently, the intricate framing plan was scrapped, and the custom-cut mirror was directly mounted, achieving a sleek, minimalist look that surprisingly enhanced the modern feel of the bathroom.

While I could elaborate extensively on the myriad details of this innovative bathroom, I’ll refrain from going into every single aspect, as I have shared comprehensive insights and updates on its development in previous posts. However, it’s worth noting the intricate thought process and custom craftsmanship that went into every element, from the layout to the finishes, making it a truly unique and highly functional space within the guest wing. Its design caters to both aesthetic appeal and practical needs, a testament to thoughtful home renovation.

A clever architectural feature connects the guest bedroom directly to the pretty bedroom through a discreet hallway, running through its spacious closet. This innovative design allows for seamless flow and provides immense utility, with built-in wardrobes thoughtfully integrated on both sides of this connecting passage. This maximizes storage efficiency and maintains a clean, uncluttered aesthetic, proving that even transitional spaces can be designed with both beauty and purpose in mind.

The construction of the bathroom vanity was a significant project, one where Julie’s timing was absolutely perfect – she arrived just in time to lend her expertise in building the robust concrete countertop! The collaborative effort resulted in a truly striking and durable vanity, don’t you agree? Its custom design not only fits the space impeccably but also provides substantial storage, aligning perfectly with our goal of creating a highly functional and stylish bathroom that would stand the test of time.

Another experimental design element I incorporated was the tile inlaid directly into the wood floor. This was a completely new technique for me, involving careful planning and execution, but I am exceptionally pleased with the final outcome. It creates a truly unique and eye-catching feature that sets this bathroom apart. Through the next doorway, you’ll find the dedicated spaces for the shower and toilet. Originally, I had pivot doors installed for these sections, but it quickly became apparent that their functionality reduced the opening by about 5 inches, making passage uncomfortably narrow. Consequently, the doors were removed, and the space now functions perfectly without them, emphasizing an open and accessible design.

We are incredibly fortunate that this entire guest wing, with all its bespoke features and thoughtful designs, has been fully completed for quite some time. This meant that our cherished guests had the distinct pleasure of enjoying these perfectly finished and beautifully appointed spaces, a sentiment I can hardly extend to Wes and myself regarding our own living quarters! In stark contrast, our “Master Wing,” encompassing the master bedroom and walk-in closet, remained in an unfinished state until after Wes had already transitioned to the Lodge property. It’s a humorous testament to where our renovation priorities lay, ensuring our guests experienced the utmost comfort and style while we continued our journey of crafting our dream home.
