The Fawn Library Volume One

Every home has that one space – a room that feels just a little out of place, slightly undefined, or perhaps underutilized. For us, that space was our dining room. While perfectly functional, its dimensions always felt a bit peculiar; too compact to truly serve as a spacious living area, yet undeniably too large to simply ignore. We envisioned something grander, something that would not only maximize its potential but also infuse our home with character and warmth. Thus, the ambitious project began: to transform this overlooked dining room into an incredible, inviting home library and a cozy reading nook. The mere thought of it coming to life fills us with immense excitement! This is the first entry in our project diary, detailing the initial, often challenging, steps of building our dream DIY built-in bookshelves.

Transforming a Dining Room into a Dream Library: Fawn’s DIY Journey – Part 1

Day 1: The Frustrating Start to Our Built-In Bookshelf Project

The first day of any DIY project is often met with high spirits and eager anticipation. Ours was no different. We had ordered the highly recommended Kreg RipCut online, thanks to Sandra’s expert advice, and couldn’t wait to put it to use. With our new tool in hand, we headed to Lowe’s, purchased three sheets of Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) – the core material for our custom built-in cabinets – and were ready to begin. We envisioned swift, precise cuts, laying the foundation for our elegant library. However, reality soon hit, and it hit hard.

Our circular saw had an L-shaped cutout on its plate that, unbeknownst to us, was significantly shorter than the rest of the tool’s base. This seemingly minor detail created a major problem: the Kreg RipCut, designed for straight, repeatable cuts, kept falling off. What should have been a straightforward process turned into a bewildering struggle. We wasted an entire sheet of expensive MDF, attempting to coax the saw and guide into submission, our frustration mounting with each failed cut. It was a disheartening start, leaving us questioning our initial enthusiasm and the very tools we had invested in for our aspiring home library.

Adding to our cutting woes was our lack of experience with proper wood support. We had vaguely remembered Sandra mentioning using insulation and a sturdy work table to cut wood efficiently and safely, preventing it from dropping or causing awkward movements. Yet, in our haste, we hadn’t fully absorbed the lesson. As my husband attempted to make cuts, I found myself in a precarious position, trying to manually support the heavy MDF sheets from underneath. This impromptu acrobatics act was not only physically demanding but also incredibly dangerous, with the constant fear of a misplaced hand or a falling piece of wood. The spectacle was, in retrospect, quite ridiculous, and I vividly recall recounting our bizarre method to Sandra later. Her response was a mix of amusement and gentle exasperation, quickly followed by a clear, concise explanation of how to construct a proper cutting table using readily available materials. This simple piece of advice, once implemented, would make our lives a thousand times easier and exponentially safer for our custom built-in project.

Despite the initial setbacks, the wasted material, and the (just a few!) exasperated words exchanged, we pressed on. By the end of this challenging first day, we had managed to get all the necessary pieces cut and primed. It was a baptism by fire, a harsh but valuable lesson in preparation, tool compatibility, and safety. We were exhausted but ready, anticipating a smoother assembly process on Day 2 for our aspiring DIY home library.

Day 2: Assembling the First Bookcase – A Test of Patience and Precision

With the primed pieces laid out, Day 2 was dedicated to assembling the first of our built-in bookcases. The excitement from seeing individual panels transform into a tangible structure was palpable. Sandra had, once again, proven invaluable by recommending where to source excellent corner clamps and introducing us to several other clever woodworking gadgets. These tools, designed to hold pieces firmly at perfect right angles, undoubtedly streamlined the assembly process significantly – making it much easier than it would have been without her guidance. Yet, even with the right tools, constructing the first unit was a slow, methodical affair, demanding both patience and a steep learning curve.

The learning curve for assembly proved to be particularly steep. It took us several hours just to figure out the precise order of operations, the optimal clamping positions, and the best way to secure each joint. Every step felt like a new puzzle. It was during this phase that I discovered a new personal deficiency: my utter ineptitude with a nail gun. My aim was consistently off, leading to multiple missed shots and nails driven into the wrong places. After missing the same board four times, I reluctantly conceded that perhaps this particular task was best left to my husband. Once he took over, the assembly pace picked up dramatically. His steady hand and growing confidence made quick work of fastening the components, and soon, the basic frame of our first bookcase began to take shape.

However, just as we were feeling a sense of accomplishment, another issue emerged. Due to the problems we encountered with our circular saw and the RipCut on Day 1, many of our initial cuts were slightly off. We hadn’t realized the full extent of this inconsistency until we began assembling. The wood panels, meant to be perfectly square and even, were visibly uneven in places. This realization was incredibly upsetting; knowing that our foundation wasn’t as precise as it should be cast a shadow over our progress. The thought of continuing with imperfect pieces felt counterproductive, so, with a heavy sigh and a mutual understanding, we decided to call it a night, leaving us with just one bookcase partially assembled and a new set of problems to resolve for our custom built-in library.

Day 3: A New Saw, Renewed Efficiency, and Building Momentum

Day 3 began with a fresh determination to rectify the previous day’s mistakes. Our uneven cuts from Day 1 necessitated purchasing more wood, an unforeseen expense but a necessary step to ensure the quality and structural integrity of our custom home library. While at the hardware store, we made a crucial decision: to invest in a brand new circular saw. Our old saw, with its problematic L-shaped cutout, had simply proven incompatible with the Kreg RipCut, costing us both time and material. This new saw, meticulously chosen for its compatibility and precision, instantly transformed our cutting experience. The RipCut, which had caused so much frustration, suddenly became the invaluable tool it was intended to be, guiding the new saw with effortless accuracy.

The impact was immediate and dramatic. What had previously taken us an agonizing hour to cut a single board now took less than an hour to cut all the remaining wood needed for our bookshelves! The difference was astounding, a testament to the importance of having the right tools for the job in any DIY woodworking project. This surge in efficiency and accuracy was incredibly motivating. With all the required pieces precisely cut and ready, we wasted no time in tackling the assembly of the remaining two bookcases.

The momentum carried us through the day. Having learned from the challenges of assembling the first unit, the subsequent bookcases came together much more smoothly. We were faster, more coordinated, and far more confident in our technique. The frustrations of the initial days began to fade, replaced by a growing sense of competence and accomplishment. By the end of Day 3, we had successfully completed the assembly of the other two bookcases, feeling a profound sense of satisfaction with the visible progress of our DIY built-in shelving project. The dream of our custom library was truly starting to materialize.

Day 4: The Agony and Ecstasy of Squaring Cabinets for a Professional Finish

The next critical step in our built-in library journey was squaring the assembled cabinets before attaching their backs – a process Sandra had sternly warned us would be “hard and frustrating and, well… terrible.” Her words proved to be prophetic. We connected with her via Skype, eager for her guidance on this crucial step. She emphasized the absolute necessity of perfectly square cabinets for a professional-looking built-in unit, explaining how even slight deviations could lead to unsightly gaps, installation nightmares, and an ultimately flawed custom bookshelf system. Despite her warnings, I was determined that we would conquer this challenge by nightfall.

After our call, we dove headfirst into squaring the first cabinet. And just as Sandra predicted, it was an absolutely brutal experience. The cabinet seemed to have a mind of its own, stubbornly refusing to yield to our attempts at squaring. We pushed, pulled, kicked, and even yelled at it, only to find that everything we did seemed to make it worse, twisting it further out of alignment. The air in the room grew thick with frustration, punctuated by sighs and muttered expletives. It was a true test of our patience and, dare I say, our marital harmony, as we navigated this challenging phase of our home library transformation.

Approximately 45 agonizing minutes into this struggle, a breakthrough finally occurred. Through sheer perseverance and trial-and-error, we figured out the subtle nudges and strategic pressure points that actually moved the cabinet towards square, rather than away from it. The moment of understanding was like a light switch flipping on. From that point, my paranoia took over. I became the designated “squareness monitor,” constantly re-measuring with a carpenter’s square, frantically telling my husband, “Don’t touch it! Do not move it!” as he carefully nailed the back into place. I’m quite sure he thought I was a psycho, obsessively checking the measurements the *entire* time he was fastening, but we got through bookcase number one, finally achieving that elusive perfect square. The relief was immense, mixed with a healthy dose of exhaustion.

With the first cabinet squared and secured, the learning curve had been overcome. The subsequent two bookcases went much, much faster. The frustration had given way to a newfound expertise, and we worked with a rhythm and understanding that had been entirely absent just hours before. By the end of the night, or rather, the very early morning hours (around 3 AM!), we had successfully squared and backed all the assembled units. Exhausted but triumphant, we finally called it a night, ready to face the next stage of our built-in library project.

Day 5: Momentum Builds – And a Lesson Learned About Priming for Quality Built-Ins

Energized by the previous night’s success, we tackled the next wall of our burgeoning library on Day 5. This time, everything truly felt easier. The processes that had caused so much head-scratching and frustration just days before now flowed naturally. We were knocking out the assembly and squaring of units in no time, working with a practiced efficiency that was truly amazing to witness. We managed to complete two more bookcases that night and wrapped up the third one the following morning, adding significantly to our collection of custom shelving units for the home library.

However, amidst this surge of productivity, I made a decision that, in hindsight, wasn’t the smartest. In my rush to simply get the units built and see more tangible progress, I opted not to prime these new bookcases immediately. At that moment, my mind was solely focused on assembly, on the physical act of construction, rather than the meticulous preparation steps. I just wanted to see them *built*. This impulsive choice, driven by eagerness and a touch of impatience, would inevitably lead to extra work down the line – a valuable lesson learned about sticking to the recommended process, especially when guided by an expert like Sandra, for any DIY home improvement project.

By the end of our first week of intense DIY work, we had managed to complete six bookcases. It was a monumental effort, filled with unexpected challenges, moments of profound frustration, and equally rewarding breakthroughs. And perhaps most importantly, we were still happily married! The stress of learning complex woodworking techniques, particularly the daunting task of squaring a cabinet, while working in close quarters with your spouse, is, I believe, the ultimate test of a relationship’s strength. I can vividly recall moments where I’m pretty sure my husband wished he could use the nail gun to silence my incessant questions, like, “Hang on, I think you moved it, let me see if it’s still square!” Yes, I was probably incredibly annoying, but that shared experience of overcoming hurdles together only solidified our bond and commitment to our DIY built-in library dream.

Reflections on Our First Week: Progress, Challenges, and Key Takeaways for DIY Bookshelves
