Frozen Flame

It’s Christmas Eve, and a wave of accomplishment washes over our home as the new appliances finally settle into their designated spaces. After weeks of demolition, planning, and anticipation, seeing these crucial elements in place feels like a significant milestone in our extensive kitchen renovation journey. Almost everything is in, signaling a return to domesticity and the promise of home-cooked meals.

The only major piece still awaiting its final connection is the cooktop ventilation system, which requires routing up through the roof. Our dedicated HVAC company initiated the process last Friday, but Mother Nature had other plans. A night of relentless rain left the roof treacherous and the pitch too steep for safe access. While a minor delay, it’s a necessary precaution, and we fully support prioritizing the safety of the skilled professionals working on our home. For now, the most pressing need – a functional kitchen – is within reach, and that’s a reason to celebrate. The endless cycle of eating out has become a burden, both on our wallets and our waistlines. We’ve missed the comfort, control, and health benefits of preparing fresh, wholesome food right here at home.

Embracing the Heart of the Home: Our New Refrigerator and Freezer

The arrival and installation of our new refrigerator and freezer units marked a truly momentous occasion. The sheer excitement of unboxing and maneuvering these large appliances into their dedicated spot was palpable. Wes, with his characteristic diligence, spent a good three hours meticulously attaching the necessary feet to both units. Following that, we collaborated for another two hours, carefully tying the units together and securing them into their new home. Five hours of teamwork, problem-solving, and a little bit of heavy lifting, but the result? Absolutely worth every minute.

We are utterly thrilled with our new fridge and freezer combination. The old kitchen was perpetually plagued by a chronic lack of storage, especially for fresh food. Our complete kitchen overhaul, which transformed a previously underutilized and wasted space into a expansive, functional area, allowed us to dedicate significant square footage to these essential appliances. This commitment to fresh food storage over extensive pantry space for boxed or prepackaged items is a deliberate choice. We firmly believe that a well-organized, spacious refrigerator and freezer are foundational to fostering healthier eating habits in the long run. It empowers us to buy fresh produce in bulk, prepare meals ahead of time, and reduce reliance on less nutritious alternatives. This design philosophy is central to our vision for a truly healthy and sustainable home environment.

One of the most satisfying aspects of this purchase was striking the perfect balance between aesthetics, functionality, and budget. These units possess the sophisticated, integrated look of a high-end, custom set, easily appearing as though they cost upwards of $10,000. Yet, through careful research and selection, we acquired this Frigidaire duo from Home Depot for a remarkably reasonable $3,000. This kind of value is precisely what we aimed for in our kitchen renovation project. We also opted for an extended 5-year protection plan for each unit, an additional investment of $150 per appliance that I consider absolutely essential. In today’s appliance market, where reviews often highlight durability concerns, finding models with the fewest negative comments was paramount. The Frigidaire units stood out in this regard, offering the best peace of mind. Only time will tell, but we have high hopes for their performance and longevity.

Smart Cooking Solutions: The Microwave and Double Oven Combo

The previous week saw the installation of another vital component of our culinary hub: the microwave, oven, and additional oven combination unit. This KitchenAid marvel has quickly become a beloved feature in our nascent kitchen. What makes it particularly ingenious is its space-saving design: the top unit functions not only as a powerful microwave but also as a convection oven. This means we essentially have the versatility of a double oven, with the added convenience of a microwave, all within the footprint typically reserved for a standard double oven. It’s a brilliant solution for maximizing cooking capacity without sacrificing valuable cabinet space, a common challenge in many kitchen remodels. The ability to bake or roast in two separate ovens simultaneously, while still having a microwave for quick heating, transforms meal preparation, making it more efficient and enjoyable. We’re already envisioning holiday feasts and everyday culinary adventures benefiting from this integrated system.

The careful planning and sequential installation of these significant appliances underscore the methodical approach we’ve adopted. Each piece, from the largest refrigeration unit to the compact, multi-functional oven, contributes to the overall efficiency and aesthetic appeal of the new kitchen. The journey has been one of calculated steps, ensuring that every element fits seamlessly into the grand design.

Precision Planning: Cooktop and Ventilation Alignment

Before the HVAC team could complete their work, it was essential to precisely set the cooktop and its corresponding ventilation hood in place. This step was crucial for them to accurately determine the exact location for drilling the necessary hole through the ceiling and into the attic. We encountered a minor but common obstacle during this phase: a rafter was directly in the path of where the ventilation duct needed to run. However, thanks to the flexibility of the ducting material and careful maneuvering, we were able to adjust its trajectory slightly. This allowed us to achieve a perfectly centered vent, aligning beautifully with the meticulous lines of our box beam ceiling. This ability to adapt and refine plans as the project unfolds is precisely why I favor a “design-build-as-you-go” approach for home renovations. It provides the freedom and flexibility to make real-time adjustments, ensuring that every detail aligns precisely with our vision and functional requirements. While it adds an element of spontaneity, it ultimately guarantees a custom finish that meets our exact expectations. It’s been an adventure, certainly, but the results so far are incredibly rewarding, and the project is taking shape beautifully.

The Power of Collaboration: It Takes a Village

Reaching this significant stage by Christmas seemed like an ambitious goal, and I’m genuinely astonished that we made it. This achievement is far from a solo endeavor; it truly takes a village to pull off a renovation of this scale. A critical member of our “village” has been our electrician, Sontero. When we removed the wall during the initial demolition phase, wires were cut, capped, and simply pushed through the floor, creating a tangled mystery. Sontero faced the daunting task of deciphering this complex web, identifying where everything needed to go, and meticulously hooking up the entire electrical system precisely as I had envisioned. His expertise and dedication are truly awesome!

Kitchen remodel progress, emphasizing community effort

I consider myself incredibly fortunate with the tradespeople who have contributed to this project. From the HVAC technicians to Sontero, they have all been exceptionally skilled, reliable, and professional. In my experience with previous projects, things rarely go this smoothly, and I’m almost hesitant to vocalize my good fortune, lest I tempt fate! But truthfully, the caliber of talent we’ve had on board has made all the difference, transforming potential headaches into manageable challenges and ensuring high-quality results at every turn. Their collaborative spirit and commitment to excellence are a testament to the value of hiring experienced professionals for complex home improvement tasks.

Navigating Challenges: Prioritizing Health Amidst Renovation

This renovation journey has presented an unexpected personal challenge: managing persistent sciatic pain. This issue has necessitated a significant deviation from my usual hands-on approach to home projects. Normally, I would tackle much of the physical labor myself, but with my back needing delicate care until this sciatic nerve issue is fully resolved, I’ve had to rely on others more than anticipated. I underwent an MRI yesterday, and we’re awaiting the results to understand the underlying cause, but regardless, I’m committed to the path of recovery.

In the interim, I continue to be actively involved in the building process, but strictly avoiding any lifting or strenuous activity. I’ve been incredibly lucky to have the support of everyone around me, from family members like Luke to professionals like Sontero, who consistently ensure I stay on track. If Luke or Sontero even spot me attempting to lift something, no matter how light – even an empty box – they immediately intervene, jumping in to take it from me. Luke frequently reminds me, “You might feel good right now because of your medication, but if you push yourself too hard, you’ll end up in worse pain than ever once the medication wears off!” His words resonate deeply, and I know he’s absolutely right. This understanding is precisely why I’ve been meticulously careful, diligently following their advice and my doctor’s instructions. It’s a test of patience, but prioritizing my health is paramount for the long-term enjoyment of our new home.

A Season of Gratitude: Enjoying the Holidays in Our Evolving Home

So, this is where we stand in our comprehensive kitchen remodel. We now have functioning appliances, a monumental step forward. For the holidays, our plan is simple: we’ll set up some temporary card tables, gather around, and simply enjoy the festive season in our evolving home. We’re not venturing anywhere, opting instead for a relaxed, sawdust-free interlude before the renovation chaos inevitably resumes. These moments of quiet enjoyment, surrounded by the tangible progress of our efforts, are incredibly precious.

Overview of the kitchen layout with newly installed appliances

There is still a significant amount of work ahead, a long way to go before the kitchen is truly complete. However, with each passing day and every new installation, it’s beginning to look more and more like the dream home we’ve envisioned, a place I’ll be incredibly excited to live in. The excitement is truly building! This entire renovation, and especially reaching this stage by Christmas, has been my ultimate Christmas wish this year. It explains why there are only a couple of presents nestled under the tree – our biggest gift is this tangible progress towards our dream kitchen. In fact, Wes and I are just now heading out for some last-minute shopping today. So, I better run!
