Courtney’s Living Room Built Ins Project Part 3

The DIY Built-Ins Saga: A Journey of Paint, Dust, and Perseverance

Embarking on a significant home improvement project is always an adventure, and my current endeavor to create custom built-ins has been no exception. It’s a winding road filled with exhilarating progress, unexpected setbacks, and moments of profound frustration, all culminating in the vision of a beautifully transformed space. The past few weeks have seen a whirlwind of activity, from meticulous painting to wrestling with heavy materials, each step bringing me closer to the finish line, even as the “to-do” list seems to stubbornly expand.

Laying the Foundation: Painting and Patching

The journey began with the essential preparatory steps. Just last night, I applied a smooth coat of ivory paint to the base cabinets, instantly brightening the space and setting a clean canvas for the next stages. Following that, today was dedicated to a task I’m less fond of: patching holes in the walls. Let’s be honest, drywall repair isn’t exactly my forte. Despite my best efforts, there’s a certain knack to achieving a perfectly seamless finish that I’m still perfecting. But then again, the only person likely to scrutinize these patches in the distant future will be the one dismantling my beautiful built-ins – and they probably deserve a rude surprise for that! This small victory of fresh paint and patched walls marks a significant milestone, shifting the focus from demolition to construction.

Removing the old crown molding was another task I initially approached with trepidation. However, much like many DIY skills, it became surprisingly manageable once I found my rhythm. Figuring out just the right amount of force to apply to pull those stubborn boards off the wall was key. With the molding successfully removed and the base cabinets painted, I carefully moved the bases into their intended positions. This was a crucial step, allowing me to finally visualize the finished product and truly appreciate the potential of the space. It’s these small glimpses of progress, especially when bathed in the warm glow of my recessed lighting, that fuel my motivation and allow me to momentarily forget the sheer volume of work that still lies ahead.

The Mighty MDF: Handling Heavy Materials

A significant component of any built-in project is working with Medium-Density Fiberboard, or MDF. My strategy for acquiring this heavy material is a testament to learning from past struggles: I buy one piece at a time from Lowe’s. This phased approach prevents me from facing the daunting, almost impossible, task of unloading multiple heavy sheets from the truck all at once. Anyone who has worked with MDF knows its substantial weight, making solo handling a considerable challenge. Furthermore, a constant worry hangs over me whenever MDF is in the back of my truck: rain. The thought of a sudden downpour ruining an expensive sheet of MDF is enough to make any DIYer cringe. A wet MDF sheet is not only ruined but becomes even more unwieldy and almost impossible to work with.

My disdain for MDF, primarily due to its weight and the immense amount of fine, pervasive sawdust it generates, is a recurring theme in this project. The dust seems to infiltrate every nook and cranny of the house, demanding constant cleanup. And then there’s the inevitable need for assistance. I confess, I’m not one to readily ask for help, especially from neighbors. However, the sheer weight of these MDF sheets often leaves me with no alternative. On this occasion, I swallowed my pride and enlisted the help of another next-door neighbor to unload a sheet, once again, onto a stack of paint cans – a makeshift support system that works surprisingly well!

While I might physically manage to maneuver a sheet myself, the risk of injury is simply too high, and a project like this requires full physical capacity. So, caution prevails. After successfully getting the MDF into my workspace, I tackled cutting the first cabinet top. The process involved meticulous scribing to the wall for a perfect, custom fit. Perhaps it was *too* perfect, as I discovered with a frustrating groan that I couldn’t quite wedge it into place between the existing walls! Moments like these truly make me wish my curious four-year-old possessed superhuman strength. Instead, he simply stood by, bombarding me with questions while I wrestled, increasingly exasperated, with the heavy piece. Argh! Recognizing the signs of impending stupidity born from fatigue, I decided to cut my losses for the day and head to bed, postponing further attempts until a fresh mind could tackle the problem.

Precision and Perseverance: Countertop Installation

A few days later, after a much-needed mental reset, I returned to the task of installing the countertops. This phase required significant precision: leveling and shimming. These countertops are incredibly heavy, presenting their own set of challenges. Achieving a perfectly level surface is paramount for both aesthetics and functionality. I painstakingly adjusted them, making micro-corrections until they were, by all accounts, pretty much level. I don’t believe I could get them any more perfect without professional equipment and assistance. This is undeniably a two-person job, and having an extra set of hands would have made a world of difference.

In a charmingly chaotic turn of events, my boys became unexpected, albeit temporary, assistants. They sat on the heavy countertops, their combined weight providing the necessary counter-pressure as I drilled them into place. It wasn’t the most conventional method, but it worked, illustrating the adaptability often required in DIY projects when adult help isn’t readily available. Their presence, though sometimes distracting, also served as a reminder of who these beautiful built-ins are ultimately for – a functional and appealing space for our family.

Battling Overwhelm: The DIY Mindset

One of the biggest indicators of my current state of “un-psyched-ness” for this project is my Facebook-to-project ratio. It’s dangerously high! With my husband away on a trip, I have an immense amount of work to complete before his return, yet the allure of checking Facebook often proves irresistible. It’s a classic procrastination loop: “Cut all the rest of my hardboard backing, now checking Facebook.” “Built two upper bookcases, now checking Facebook.” Every time I pause to contemplate the sheer volume of tasks still awaiting completion, a wave of overwhelming dread washes over me. It’s a common struggle for DIYers – the initial enthusiasm can quickly give way to exhaustion and self-doubt. After priming the two upper bookshelves, another quick Facebook check felt like a justified reward before finally calling it a night. Breaking down tasks into smaller, manageable chunks, and allowing for brief digital detours, seems to be my current coping mechanism, however imperfect.

The Final Push: Painting, Assembly, and Dust Control

The next morning brought with it a renewed sense of purpose, and an immediate challenge: accurately measuring the exact placement for the electrical outlet cutouts on the hardboard backing of two of the cases. This is a critical step for both functionality and aesthetics. I believe I had a stroke of genius, involving painter’s tape and primer, to achieve this precision – a testament to the creative problem-solving that DIY demands!

The past 24 hours were a blur of intense productivity. The kids were enjoying their time at Grandma’s, which was the only reason I managed to accomplish so much. I successfully built the other two bookcases, bringing the structural phase closer to completion. I also applied a second coat of primer to the two cabinet tops and the first two bookcases, ensuring a durable and smooth finish. Finally, I moved on to painting the two cabinet tops and the face frames of the base cabinets, seeing the true colors of the project begin to emerge. However, despite these significant achievements, the feeling of being totally overwhelmed still looms whenever I consider the remaining tasks. It’s a constant battle between celebrating progress and facing the mountain still to climb.

Now, a new challenge arises: the aftermath. I desperately need to tackle the pervasive MDF dust that has infiltrated nearly every room of my house. This fine, clinging dust is an unavoidable byproduct of working with MDF and requires thorough cleaning. Simultaneously, I must put away all the tools and attempt to tidy the garage before my husband’s return. The irony, of course, is that all my efforts to clean will likely be undone the moment I resume work on this project, bringing fresh dust and tools back into the equation. It’s a cyclical process inherent to large-scale DIY, a constant dance between creation and cleanup.

Finding Inspiration in the DIY Community

When the frustration mounts and the task feels insurmountable, I often turn to the inspiring stories of other DIYers for a much-needed dose of motivation. My friend Sandra, for instance, is a truly brave woman. Her entire house is a continuous project, a testament to her passion and vision. I can tell she absolutely loves the process, embracing the constant state of transformation. It makes me wonder, if her entire house is a project, why does my single bookshelf project feel like it’s disrupting the order of my *entire* home?

It’s during these moments of self-doubt that I draw strength from the “Sawdust Diaries” participants who came before me. I think of Beckie, who tackled the monumental task of building nine cabinets – nine of the *exact same thing*! The sheer repetitiveness of that effort must have been mind-numbing, yet her finished product was absolutely amazing, a true testament to her dedication and skill. And then there’s Malisa’s incredible mudroom lockers, complete with an intricate wall treatment. The result was simply awesome, showcasing a blend of functionality and beautiful design. Their perseverance and the stunning outcomes of their projects serve as a powerful reminder: I just need to push through, to get it done, and the reward will be a space I’ve lovingly crafted myself. Their journeys underscore that every challenge is an opportunity for growth and that the final reveal makes all the effort worthwhile.
