Avas Closet The Next Chapter

Ava’s Dream Closet Transformation: Part 2 – Conquering Cabinets and Challenging Corners

The exhilarating journey of building Ava’s custom closet continues, pushing the boundaries of design and DIY craftsmanship. If you’re just joining us on this exciting home improvement adventure, be sure to catch up on the foundational work and initial plans we laid out in Part 1. There, we set the stage for what promises to be a truly magnificent and highly functional bespoke wardrobe solution.

The Unyielding Pace of Progress: Weekends are for Building

During the busy weekdays, progress on Ava’s closet build often takes a back seat to other commitments. However, as Friday evenings roll around and the weekend beckons, I fully immerse myself in the project, transforming into a focused building machine. This dedicated weekend effort allows me to compensate for lost hours and make significant strides. This past weekend was particularly productive, culminating in the successful construction and installation of the last of the three remaining long hanging cabinets.

Precision Assembly: The Art of Cabinet Construction

While the actual assembly of the cabinets might seem like a daunting task to some, it’s surprisingly not the most challenging part of this custom build. In fact, with meticulous planning, precise cuts (often pre-fabricated for efficiency), and a streamlined workflow, the cabinet frames come together quite rapidly. Utilizing robust materials such as high-grade plywood or MDF, secured with strong joinery techniques like screws and pocket holes, ensures a durable and rigid structure. The key lies in accurate measurements and ensuring every joint is perfectly square, creating a flawless shell that will withstand years of use.

The real test of endurance and ingenuity, however, often arises during the installation phase. These custom built-in closets demand not just precise construction but also strategic maneuvering. Each of the last six cabinets, for instance, stands an impressive 87 inches tall. The critical and often frustrating step is hoisting these substantial units off the floor and settling them upright onto a pre-built platform, which itself measures a crucial 6 ¼ inches in height. This elevation isn’t merely for aesthetics; it provides a stable, level base, protects the cabinet from potential floor moisture, and allows for the seamless integration of base molding, giving the entire unit a polished, furniture-like appearance.

The Herculean Task of Installation: Lifting Giants into Place

Lifting these towering, heavy cabinets solo is a true test of strength, balance, and patience. Visualizing the physics involved – leveraging 87-inch tall pieces of finely crafted cabinetry into a confined space and then carefully raising them onto a modest 6 ¼-inch platform – highlights the physical challenge. It requires careful planning, often involving temporary supports or a strategic pivot point, to ensure the cabinet doesn’t tip or sustain damage. Each lift is performed with utmost caution, prioritizing safety and the integrity of the meticulously constructed pieces. This is where the builder’s tenacity truly shines, transforming what could be a two-person job into a single-handed triumph through sheer determination and learned technique.

Strategic Storage Solutions: Maximizing Every Inch

From the current image, it might be challenging to fully appreciate the expansive scope of these side cabinets, which span an impressive 93 inches across the wall. Within this expansive layout, we’ve strategically tucked two extra-large cabinets into the corners. These large units are partially concealed by the elegant center focal cabinets that immediately capture attention upon entering the room. This design choice isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s a brilliant strategy for maximizing storage. By placing deeper, larger storage in less visible areas, we can maintain a sleek, uncluttered look in the main view while still providing ample space for bulky items, seasonal clothing, or less frequently used accessories.

The layout of Ava’s custom closet is a study in contrasts, presenting both straightforward solutions and intricate design puzzles. On one side of the closet, the walls meet at a perfect 90-degree angle, allowing for a relatively seamless installation. However, the opposing side features an exasperatingly angled wall—a design curveball that nearly led to a complete meltdown on Sunday afternoon. This unexpected angle transformed a routine installation into a complex problem-solving exercise, requiring careful thought and precise adjustments.

The Angled Wall Awaits: A Designer’s Nemesis (and Triumph)

The final cabinet installation on the angled wall side proved to be a nail-biting experience. Despite all efforts, the last cabinet stubbornly refused to fit by a critical 1-1/2 inches. The ensuing struggle involved a series of frustrating pushes and pulls, along with an internal debate over all possible options, including the daunting prospect of disassembling and rebuilding an entire cabinet. The mental fatigue began to set in, threatening to derail the day’s progress. Just as despair was about to take hold, I finally discovered the elusive culprit: a small shim had inadvertently fallen onto one end of the platform, subtly elevating it and preventing the extra-large cabinet from sitting flush against the angled wall. It’s precisely these seemingly minor details that can provoke the classic DIY expletive, “What the heck?!” The immediate relief and satisfaction that washed over me once the errant shim was removed were immense. With that tiny obstruction gone, the cabinet slid perfectly into place, restoring harmony and concluding a particularly challenging day on a triumphant note.

This experience underscores a universal truth in custom building: even the smallest oversight can create monumental obstacles. Yet, it also highlights the immense satisfaction derived from troubleshooting and conquering such unexpected hurdles, transforming frustration into a profound sense of accomplishment.

Looking Ahead: Sandra’s Vision and Custom Configurations

Indeed, that crazy angled wall remains a prominent feature, begging the question: “Who puts angles in a closet?” It’s a design anomaly that presents an exciting new challenge for Sandra, the brilliant mind behind the overall vision for Ava’s closet. This is where her expertise truly shines, transforming a potential hindrance into a unique design opportunity. We still have two more crucial cabinets to construct before moving onto the finishing touches. Sandra has provided the basic structural shell for one of these, giving me the freedom and creative license to design and implement some of the interior configurations myself. This collaborative approach promises to yield highly personalized and ingenious storage solutions. It will be particularly interesting to see how Sandra masterfully addresses and integrates that angled wall into the final, cohesive design, ensuring every inch of Ava’s custom closet is not only beautiful but also supremely functional.

The beauty of a custom-built closet lies in its ability to adapt to specific needs and challenging architectural features. For the remaining cabinets, my task will involve crafting innovative internal layouts, perhaps incorporating adjustable shelving, specialized compartments for shoes or accessories, or custom drawer banks to maximize utility. Sandra’s approach to the angled wall could involve bespoke angled shelves, custom-cut filler panels that seamlessly blend with the cabinetry, or even an integrated small niche that utilizes the awkward space creatively. The possibilities are endless, and the anticipation for these final design elements is palpable.
