Embarking on the renovation of The Lodge has been an exhilarating journey, challenging my established design philosophy and pushing the boundaries of conventional cabinetry. This unique building, with its distinct character, has necessitated a departure from my signature all-white aesthetic, guiding me towards a more eclectic and adaptable approach. For the first time in a major project, I’m integrating a diverse mixture of finishes for the cabinetry, with the striking beauty of African Mahogany taking center stage as the primary exposed material. This choice might come as a delightful surprise to those familiar with my usual preference for crisp, painted whites, signifying a bold new direction in my design expression for this truly special space.
Precision and stability are paramount in cabinet installation, which is why I’ve adopted a meticulous system involving leveling legs on the front of each cabinet and a robust ledger board meticulously fixed to the walls. The ledger, installed with the unwavering accuracy of a laser level, guarantees a perfectly horizontal baseline, simplifying the subsequent stages of installation. This method allows me to focus solely on adjusting the front leveling legs during cabinet placement, making the process more efficient. While adjusting the rear levelers can be a minor inconvenience, often requiring me to get down on the floor and reach into tight spaces, the superior stability and perfect alignment achieved through this technique are invaluable, ensuring a flawless foundation for the entire kitchen.

Crafting the Fridge and Oven Wall: A Symphony of Custom Cabinetry
My journey into the heart of The Lodge’s kitchen began with the demanding task of constructing the cabinets for the back wall. This essential section of the kitchen integrates three critical base cabinets alongside two exceptionally large and tall custom units designed to house major appliances. The trio of base cabinets meticulously planned for this area includes a spacious 36-inch sink base, specifically designed to accommodate a large basin and its associated plumbing. Adjacent to this, a dedicated dishwasher cabinet ensures seamless integration of the appliance, while a versatile storage cabinet, equipped with four smooth-gliding drawers, offers ample and organized space for kitchen essentials, embodying both functionality and streamlined design.

A significant highlight of this wall is the custom-designed tall oven cabinet, a truly bespoke piece crafted to perfectly fit the specific double ovens I had carefully selected. This unit goes beyond mere housing; it’s a fully integrated solution featuring a convenient storage drawer at the bottom, ideal for baking sheets or large pots, and a thoughtfully divided storage compartment positioned above the ovens. The sheer scale and robust construction of this cabinet made it incredibly heavy, underscoring the necessity of waiting for additional assistance to safely and accurately lift and secure it into its designated position. Every detail, from its structural integrity to its tailored dimensions, reflects a commitment to both form and function in this luxury kitchen build.

The refrigerator cabinet, another colossal custom piece, was meticulously engineered to house the specific refrigerator and freezer pair chosen for The Lodge. Its sheer height and width presented considerable handling challenges during construction and transport. Once carefully positioned, the unit required precise plumbing and leveling to ensure optimal functionality and aesthetic alignment. Securing such a large and heavy cabinet demanded ingenuity; I temporarily affixed nailers to the front, strategically squaring up the sides. These temporary supports will be removed once the adjacent base cabinets are fully installed, allowing me to permanently anchor the right side of the refrigerator cabinet, creating a robust and integrated kitchen ensemble. This custom approach guarantees that every appliance has a perfectly tailored home, contributing to a seamless and sophisticated kitchen design.

Designing the Integrated Coffee Bar Wall: Blending Form and Function
The “Coffee Bar” wall became my next focus, a section where my design process truly embraced its iterative nature. While I always begin with a comprehensive overall plan for the kitchen, I maintain an open mind and a flexible approach, allowing for real-time adjustments as each phase of the build progresses. The evolving aesthetic and functional dynamics of the space become clearer as cabinets fill the room, often inspiring subtle yet impactful changes to the initial layout. To ensure optimal user experience and ergonomic flow, I often engage Wes in a “make-believe” kitchen scenario. This practical exercise involves simulating daily kitchen activities, helping us collectively decide on the most intuitive and convenient placement for key items. For instance, questions like “Should the sink be here, and the dishwasher there, or what configuration truly feels best?” are answered through hands-on interaction, ensuring the final design is both beautiful and highly functional.

Optimizing Workflow with Kitchen Island Cabinets: The 42-Inch Rule
The strategic placement of the kitchen island cabinets followed a similar principle of “imaginary cooking” scenarios, again involving Wes to ensure ultimate user comfort and efficiency. Building the perimeter wall cabinets first was a deliberate choice, providing a tangible framework before finalizing the critical decisions regarding the placement of the range and the island sink. While a standard 42-inch pathway between opposing cabinet banks is generally my go-to design rule for optimal workflow and movement, I wanted Wes to physically “feel” the space before these crucial elements were permanently locked into place. This hands-on evaluation was absolutely critical, especially given the extensive preparatory work involved: we had to meticulously bring gas lines, plumbing, and electrical conduits up through the concrete floor, making these initial layout decisions irreversible and demanding absolute certainty from the outset.

To truly immerse ourselves in the functional layout, I constructed a large cardboard box to represent the range, meticulously taping it into position. With all perimeter cabinets installed, Wes, assisted by Terry, engaged in an immersive “test run” to assess the feel and flow of the kitchen. Initially, we shifted everything back, creating an overly generous pathway between the back wall and the island. Then, through careful, incremental adjustments, we inched the island forward until the spacing felt intuitively perfect for Wes’s movement and workflow. The result? Predictably, the ideal pathway width settled precisely at 42 inches – a testament to both thoughtful design and empirical testing! This crucial step ensured the kitchen island was positioned not just aesthetically, but ergonomically for its primary user.
Following this crucial spatial validation, Terry and I constructed a sturdy pony wall to provide essential backing for the island cabinets, enhancing their structural integrity and finish. The subsequent, though not necessarily sequential, steps involved specialized contractors. My concrete coring specialist expertly cut the necessary openings in the floor for the sink and dishwasher drains. Concurrently, the gas technicians meticulously brought the gas line up for the range, and our electrician skillfully routed all required electrical connections to their precise locations. For the island cabinet installation, I again leveraged the reliability of a ledger board coupled with front leveling legs, ensuring the entire island was perfectly level and securely anchored, ready to become the central hub of The Lodge’s kitchen.

Elevating Style with Upper Cabinets: A Journey of Design Refinement
The design of the upper cabinets presented an unexpected opportunity for creative adaptation. Initially, I had installed four shorter cabinets along the back wall, but upon reflection, their proportion felt unbalanced within the expansive kitchen space. Consequently, I removed the two outer units and replaced them with taller cabinets, instantly enhancing the verticality and grandeur of the wall. This section ultimately evolved into a distinct “accent” area, born out of necessity. Lacking sufficient African Mahogany veneer to cover the exposed sides of the new taller cabinets, and finding that stain matching wouldn’t achieve the desired flawless finish, I made a bold decision: I painted them black. This choice, initially met with some internal debate, was fully validated once the doors were installed. Now, I am 98% confident in this decision, as the black cabinets provide a sophisticated contrast, adding depth and a contemporary edge to the mahogany-rich environment. Additionally, learning from this experience, I now keep two sheets of Mahogany veneer on hand, ensuring I’m well-prepared for any future design adjustments without compromising on material continuity or scrambling for alternative solutions.

Installing upper cabinets solo, especially without the aid of a convenient hanging rail system, is undeniably challenging, demanding considerable patience and ingenuity. This is where a couple of “third hands” – whether literal assistants or specialized support tools – prove incredibly beneficial, making precise alignment and secure fastening much more manageable. The prominent empty space on the coffee bar wall is purposefully reserved for a television cabinet. While I initially entertained ideas of elaborate hidden mechanisms, such as a sophisticated moving wall or lift-up cabinet doors to conceal the TV, I ultimately decided against them. Our anticipated usage indicates the TV will be actively watched far more often than it would be hidden, rendering such complex concealment features unnecessary and potentially detracting from the everyday functionality of the space. This decision reflects a pragmatic approach, prioritizing ease of access and enjoyment over purely aesthetic concealment, ensuring the coffee bar remains a comfortable and user-friendly entertainment hub.

The Finishing Touch: Installing Doors and Drawers with Precision

The meticulous process of finishing the cabinetry involved an astonishing amount of detail, particularly with edge banding. I’ve applied approximately 1000 linear feet of edge banding to date, covering every visible edge. This comprehensive treatment includes all cabinet fronts and all four sides of every door and drawer front, ensuring a refined, durable, and cohesive finish throughout the kitchen. The only exceptions to this extensive edge banding are the specialized refrigerator, oven, and TV cabinets. These particular units are faced with exquisite Sapele, a wood known for its rich color and unique grain patterns, which I personally jointed and planed. The Sapele, distinct from African Mahogany, provides a subtle yet luxurious variation in texture and tone, adding another layer of sophisticated detail to the overall custom kitchen design.

While the kitchen is rapidly nearing completion, a few final crucial steps remain before it can be officially declared “done.” The immediate priority was to finalize the installation of all base cabinets, a prerequisite for accurate templating and ordering of the countertops. My ambitious goal is to have these stunning surfaces installed sometime this year, transforming the functional framework into a truly polished kitchen.
In the current climate of unpredictable supply chains and extended lead times for construction materials, labor, and appliances, I’ve adopted a strict and pragmatic procurement policy. Before building any custom space for an appliance or fixture, I ensure that all items – from the refrigerator and freezer to the sinks, faucets, and lighting – are not only ordered but physically “in hand” on site. This approach stems from challenging experiences, such as discovering my desired refrigerator and freezer pair had a waiting list extending over a year, with no clear delivery date. By having all items present, I avoid the costly and frustrating alternative of building for components that might become unavailable, ensuring a seamless and efficient build process. Currently, I have an entire room dedicated to housing these patiently waiting items, a testament to forward planning in these uncertain times.
As we speak, the custom countertops for The Lodge’s kitchen are actively being cast, a significant milestone in this project. My immediate goal is to complete all remaining tasks in the kitchen by next week, preparing the space for their imminent arrival within the next couple of weeks. The installation of these substantial countertops presents a logistical challenge, as they need to be lifted to the second floor of the building. This “sketchy” operation will likely require the use of heavy machinery, such as a crane, a lull lift, or potentially even a helicopter, highlighting the unique demands of this custom build. Before the countertops make their ascent, we’ll strategically utilize whichever lifting resource we secure to first transport a cherished piano and other heavy items currently in storage to their new, elevated positions. It promises to be an exciting and memorable phase, filled with anticipation for the grand unveiling of the finished kitchen!
Fun and challenging times ahead!
