Welcome back, DIY enthusiasts and aspiring makers! It’s been a little while since I’ve shared an update on my mentoring journey, but rest assured, the passion for empowering others to tackle their home projects and build their skills has never wavered. In fact, it has evolved into something even more exciting and collaborative. I’m thrilled to announce the launch of my new mentorship group, the Sawdust Squad, and soon you’ll have the privilege of hearing directly from these talented individuals as they share their unique experiences and growth with you.

The Evolution of Mentorship: From One-on-One to a Thriving Community
For over four years, I’ve had the immense pleasure of virtually guiding individuals through their home transformation projects, connecting with passionate DIYers and creators from all corners of the globe. This journey began with a hands-on approach, where my clients diligently documented their weekly progress in journals. These insights were then shared with you, our dedicated readers, on the Sawdust Diaries. It was a rewarding process, offering a raw and authentic look into the challenges and triumphs of real-world home improvement.
However, managing the editing of client photos and journals, alongside my own extensive projects, videos, photography, and blog posts, became increasingly demanding. While I cherished the opportunity to showcase their hard work, the sheer volume of content creation eventually led me to streamline my process. After about a year, I made the difficult decision to stop sharing these individual client projects publicly. But let me be absolutely clear: my commitment to mentoring never ceased. The desire to empower and educate remained as strong as ever, simply transitioning behind the scenes.
Balancing Personal Projects with a Passion for Guiding Others
This past year has been particularly intense, as I embarked on even more ambitious personal projects. From the exciting challenge of the Calderwood Cottage flip to transforming entire houses with my Sister in focused 30-day stints, my hands have been fuller than ever. This intensive workload meant I had to temporarily pause taking on new individual clients for weekly sessions. My love for mentoring is unwavering – I envision myself guiding and teaching well into my 90s! – but the traditional one-on-one weekly format simply wasn’t sustainable with my current commitments.
This period of reflection led to an exciting realization: how could I continue to offer high-quality, impactful mentorship while also managing my own demanding schedule? The answer emerged in the form of a collaborative, dynamic group setting.
Introducing the Sawdust Squad: A New Era of Collaborative Mentorship
Out of this need for evolution, the “Mentorship Squad” was born. This new initiative allows me to continue sharing my expertise and passion for DIY, woodworking, and home renovation in a more scalable yet equally personal way. We now hold monthly, small group sessions via Skype, fostering a supportive and engaging environment where creativity and skill-building thrive. The core goal for the Sawdust Squad is clear: to challenge each member to venture beyond their current capabilities, pushing their boundaries to learn new techniques and master new skills in their craft.
Monthly Challenges: Igniting Creativity and Skill Development
Each month, I issue a specific challenge designed to stretch the squad members’ existing skill sets. For instance, November’s challenge focused on mastering a new joinery technique. This isn’t just about theoretical learning; it’s about practical application. Following the introduction of the challenge, members are tasked with conceptualizing and executing a project that prominently features this “new to them” technique. This hands-on approach ensures that the learning is deeply ingrained and immediately applicable to their own creative endeavors. Future challenges might delve into advanced finishing techniques, intricate cabinet design, unique material integration, efficient workshop organization, or even specialized power tool mastery, always with a strong emphasis on practical application.
This structured approach not only accelerates skill acquisition but also provides a concrete framework for continuous growth. The beauty of group mentorship lies in the shared experience; members learn not only from my guidance but also from each other’s projects, perspectives, and problem-solving strategies. It creates a vibrant community of passionate makers supporting one another’s journeys.
Amplifying Insights: The Sawdust Squad’s Contribution to Our Community
My mentoring sessions have always been an incredible source of inspiration for articles and tutorials shared here on the blog. The questions posed by one mentee often reveal common queries among many others in the DIY community. This direct interaction helps me pinpoint exactly what information you, our readers, are eager to learn. Now, with the Sawdust Squad, this valuable feedback loop is even stronger and more diverse.
In addition to the tips, tools, techniques, and comprehensive tutorials that I consistently create and share with you, my talented mentees will also be contributing to the SawdustGirl.com platform. They will be sharing detailed accounts of their “skill stretching experiences”—documenting their journey through each monthly challenge, from initial concept to completed project. This means you’ll gain multiple perspectives on various DIY and woodworking techniques, seeing how different individuals approach and overcome similar challenges.
Beyond the Workbench: Honing Crucial Blogging Skills
A unique aspect of the Sawdust Squad is that all my mentees are active bloggers themselves. This means that photography, compelling writing, and all the intricate details associated with effective content creation (including editing, SEO optimization, and audience engagement) are integral parts of the skill set they are constantly refining. This focus on content creation is a win-win: they hone their digital storytelling abilities, and you, our readers, benefit from a richer, more diverse array of high-quality content. Critically, this collaborative model means that the responsibility of sharing these amazing adventures and teaching moments with you all won’t fall solely on my shoulders. It’s a true community effort, expanding the breadth and depth of content available on SawdustGirl.com exponentially.
Looking Ahead: Inspiring Projects and Growing Skills
I am incredibly excited to witness the remarkable growth and improvement in skills of these awesome ladies within the Sawdust Squad. Their dedication, creativity, and willingness to step outside their comfort zones are truly inspiring. I have no doubt that their journey will yield a treasure trove of innovative projects, insightful posts, and practical tutorials that will captivate and educate our entire community. We anticipate a steady stream of unique content, from detailed step-by-step guides on advanced woodworking joints to creative solutions for common home renovation dilemmas, all presented through the fresh perspectives of our squad members.
Hopefully, you’ll enjoy following their progress and drawing inspiration from the creative projects and posts that are going to emerge from this exciting new venture. Get ready to be inspired, learn new tricks, and perhaps even join us in stretching your own creative boundaries!

p.s. I genuinely wish it were possible to mentor every single person who expresses an interest in joining the Sawdust Squad, but the intimate, focused nature of the group means spaces are limited. Our SG Squad members are carefully selected individuals who are not only eager to learn but are also committed to transforming their learning experiences into valuable teaching moments for our broader audience. This commitment to sharing knowledge is fundamental to the squad’s mission. If you meet the following requirements and are ready to embark on a challenging yet incredibly rewarding journey of skill development and community contribution, we’d love to hear from you:

- Eager to Grow: You must possess a genuine interest in significantly stretching and advancing your skills in one or more of these core areas: advanced woodworking techniques, innovative “making” practices, comprehensive home renovation strategies, precision cabinet making, or complex DIY projects. We’re looking for individuals who are ready to push their boundaries.
- Content Contributor: Squad members are required to create and submit one piece of unique, high-quality content each month. This content will be exclusively published on SawdustGirl.com, detailing your journey with the monthly challenge or showcasing a skill you’ve developed through the mentorship. This ensures a consistent flow of fresh, inspiring material for our readers.
- Strong Communication Skills: Proficiency in both photography and writing is crucial. These are vital blogging skills that enable you to effectively document your projects, clearly explain techniques, and engage with our audience. Your ability to visually and verbally communicate your process and results will be paramount.
