Marnie’s Dream Built-in Closet

DIY Dream Closet: Transforming Kate’s Bedroom into a Beach-Themed Oasis

Hello there, fellow home renovation enthusiasts! My name is Marnie, and I confess – I am wholeheartedly addicted to the thrill of transforming spaces. There’s truly nothing quite like the rush of witnessing a room undergo a complete metamorphosis with just a fresh coat of paint, new flooring, and a touch of elegant trim. While some might find my obsession a bit peculiar (my loving husband included!), I’m delighted to share my journey with a community that understands this unique passion.

Over the years, I’ve successfully renovated and sold several houses, each project a stepping stone in my DIY education. However, for the very first time, my current endeavor is focused on our ‘forever’ home – a house we plan to live in and cherish for years to come. The excitement is palpable! We decided to kick off this grand adventure with a space that holds a special place in our hearts: my daughter Kate’s bedroom. With a deep love for the ocean and sandy shores, Kate envisioned a vibrant beach-themed sanctuary, anchored by the refreshing colors of navy, turquoise, and a playful pop of orange.

The Bedroom Makeover Begins: From Drab to Dreamy

To fully immerse ourselves in the transformation, Kate graciously relocated to our guest room, clearing the stage for a spectacular makeover. We meticulously tackled every aspect of the room, from the ground up:

  • The walls received a fresh palette, reflecting the serene blues and greens of the sea.
  • New, brighter lighting fixtures were installed, illuminating the space with a warm, inviting glow.
  • Space-saving pocket closet doors replaced the old, cumbersome swing doors, optimizing the room’s footprint.
  • Gleaming hardwood floors were laid, providing a durable and aesthetically pleasing foundation that evoked the natural feel of a coastal retreat.
  • Elegant new door and window trim were added, elevating the room’s architectural details.
  • And finally, the crowning jewel: a captivating “beach shack” feature wall, designed to transport anyone into a seaside haven.

The initial phase of the bedroom transformation was truly remarkable. Below, you can witness the dramatic before and after:

After the Initial Bedroom Renovation:

I am absolutely thrilled with the progress we’ve made so far! The room breathes new life, perfectly embodying Kate’s vision. However, one final, formidable challenge remained: the closet.

The Closet Conundrum: Inefficient Storage in a Walk-In Space

Kate is indeed fortunate to have a walk-in closet in her room – a feature many dream of. Yet, despite its designation as a “walk-in,” it was on the smaller side and suffered from shockingly inefficient storage. The existing setup was a chaotic mix of a single hanging rod and a high shelf, leaving vast amounts of vertical space utterly wasted. There was no dedicated space for shoes, folded clothes, or accessories, leading to constant clutter and frustration. We knew it had the potential to be a highly functional and organized space, but its current state was far from ideal for a growing teenager.

The Original Closet’s Inefficiency:

My vision for this space was clear: custom closet organizers that would maximize every inch. However, the thought of paying thousands of dollars for professional installation was simply not an option. While I have considerable experience with trim work and cosmetic renovations, the idea of assembling complex custom built-ins from scratch felt incredibly daunting. Despite my DIY confidence, the intricacies of structural woodworking filled me with a genuine sense of apprehension.

Enter Sandra: The DIY Closet Guru and My Guiding Light

It was at this critical juncture that Sandra, the brilliant mind behind Sawdust Girl, came to my rescue! Like countless others in the DIY community, I stumbled upon her incredible post detailing the custom built-in closet she crafted in her master bedroom. I was utterly captivated! Her designs were not only stunningly beautiful but also incredibly functional and, most importantly, presented in a way that made them seem achievable for a dedicated DIYer. I was instantly hooked.

When she later announced that she was offering personal coaching sessions, I seized the opportunity without hesitation. This was my chance to learn from the best, to conquer my fears of complex assembly, and to bring my custom closet vision to life without the exorbitant cost of professional services. Investing in her expertise felt like the smartest decision for this project.

The Planning Phase: From Vision to Blueprint

For our initial consultation, I meticulously prepared by taking numerous photographs of Kate’s existing closet and gathering precise dimensions of the space. I wanted to provide Sandra with every detail she needed to help us design a truly bespoke storage solution. We discussed Kate’s specific needs – how many clothes she had, her preferred way of organizing, and what items needed special storage.

Closet Dimensions and Layout for Custom Design:

Our first Skype session was incredibly productive. Before I knew it – BOOM! – I had actual plans, complete with detailed diagrams and step-by-step instructions. The clarity and precision of Sandra’s guidance were exactly what I needed to move past my initial apprehension. Feeling a surge of confidence, I set out for Home Depot to gather my supplies, perhaps a little too cocky with an “I got this” attitude. However, within my first five minutes navigating the vast screw aisle, my hubris was quickly put to the test. Despite Sandra’s specific instructions, I found myself utterly bewildered by the sheer variety of screws. Which size? Which material? Which thread? It was a perplexing labyrinth!

Desperate, I resorted to texting pictures back and forth with Sandra from the middle of the store, pleading for help in identifying the “magic box” of fasteners. Finally, after a series of frantic messages and blurry photos – DING DING DING, WINNER WINNER CHICKEN DINNER! We found them!

The Elusive MDF Screws:

The 1 3/4″ Spax MDF screws. As I would soon discover, these particular fasteners were worth every ounce of frustration. Their superior grip and ability to create a strong bond in MDF without stripping or cracking made them an absolute game-changer. I adore these screws; I would marry them if I could!

The Lumber Aisle Challenge: Heavy Lifting and Smart Tools

Next on my shopping list were the MDF sheets – the primary material for our custom closet. I knew they would be heavy, but I significantly underestimated just how incredibly dense and cumbersome these full sheets would be. They were truly SUPER MEGA BIGGIE SMALLS & HEAVY D H-E-A-V-Y! Fortunately, I arrived at Home Depot early enough to quickly find an incredibly helpful associate who assisted me in carefully loading the massive MDF sheets into my car. A word of advice for any DIYer: don’t hesitate to ask for help with heavy lifting; it saves both your back and your material!

Finally, I made it home with all my supplies, still feeling motivated despite the initial setbacks at the store. I carefully unloaded the sheets into the makeshift workshop I had set up in my garage. For breaking down large sheets of plywood or MDF, I had previously invested in a Kreg Rip Cut jig, a tool I learned about and highly recommended through other Sawdust Girl posts. This jig, designed to guide a circular saw for perfectly straight and repeatable cuts, was already set up and ready to go. I felt prepared – “LET’S CUT SOMETHING!” I declared, brimming with anticipation.

The First Cuts: A Lesson in Calibration

Following Sandra’s precise cut list, I measured each piece twice, meticulously marking my lines. With the Kreg Rip Cut, the initial cutting process felt incredibly easy and smooth. I finished the first sheet feeling a sense of accomplishment, looking at a neat stack of cut MDF pieces, ready for assembly. My satisfaction, however, quickly dissolved into horror when I decided to double-check the dimensions of my freshly cut pieces. To my dismay, every single piece was off by approximately 1/8 of an inch! But I had measured! TWICE! What could possibly have gone wrong? FUDGE! (Only I didn’t say “fudge”… I’m sure you can imagine the actual expletive.)

After a moment of pure panic, I calmed myself and began to troubleshoot. I tried a few sample cuts with the Rip Cut on scrap material and quickly realized the tool itself was not calibrated properly. Despite having followed the instructions during its initial setup, I had failed to perform a critical step: double-checking the Rip Cut’s calibration against a known straight edge before I started hacking away at my beautiful, expensive sheet of MDF. It was a costly oversight, both in terms of material and time.

Crucial DIY Woodworking Lessons Learned:

This experience provided invaluable, albeit frustrating, lessons that every DIY enthusiast should internalize:

  1. Measure Twice, Cut Once (and then measure again): While this is a common adage, it truly is the bedrock of accurate woodworking.
  2. Calibrate Your Tools Regularly: Do not assume a new tool is perfectly calibrated out of the box. Always verify its settings and accuracy before critical cuts.
  3. Always Make a Test Cut: Before committing to your actual project material, make a test cut on a scrap piece. This simple step can save you immense frustration and wasted resources.

Although I was incredibly bummed out by having already wasted a full sheet of MDF, I took a deep breath, shook off the disappointment as best as I could, and continued cutting the rest of the sheets I had left. Now, with the Kreg Rip Cut properly calibrated and my attention sharpened by my error, the subsequent cut pieces were precisely the right measurements. I sent Sandra an email, a somewhat sheepish update on my “progress,” detailing the setback but reassuring her of my renewed determination. That night, I went to bed with only a growing pile of accurately cut MDF and a TON of sawdust blanketing my garage floor to show for it.

The Evidence of Hard Work (and a Little Mess):

Despite the initial hiccup, a sense of cautious optimism prevailed. I was confident (well, kind of confident) that after another quick trip to Home Depot in the morning for replacement MDF, Day 2 of this DIY custom closet build would be much more successful. The journey of home renovation is rarely without its bumps, but the resilience to push through is what truly defines a dedicated DIYer. Stay tuned for the next phase of this exciting project!
