Bathroom Makeover: Chapter 7

Jack and Jill bathroom update

Hello, renovation enthusiasts! It feels like ages since my last update on the Jack and Jill bathroom transformation, specifically about six weeks ago. Life, as it often does, threw a few unexpected curveballs my way, impacting my ability to maintain full productivity. While my passion for this bathroom overhaul remained strong, personal challenges meant I wasn’t operating at 100% capacity. This update will delve into the significant progress I’ve managed to make despite these detours, offering insights into each step of the renovation journey.

Overcoming Unexpected Hurdles: Project Delays and Personal Health

The past six weeks have been a testament to resilience, both personally and professionally. Initially, I experienced severe abdominal pain that necessitated an emergency room visit. This wasn’t an isolated incident, as I’d had similar discomfort for several months, but this particular episode was the most intense. Following consultations with both a GI specialist and a GYN, it was determined that ovarian cysts were likely the cause. Fortunately, with appropriate management, I haven’t experienced a recurrence in the last six weeks, which has been a great relief.

Just as I began to feel better, a pervasive respiratory virus decided to make an unwelcome appearance. This wasn’t your typical short-lived cold; it lingered for weeks, teasing me with brief periods of improvement only to worsen again. The cycle of getting better, then relapsing, was incredibly frustrating and exhausting. Convinced I had developed something more serious like bronchitis or pneumonia, I visited the doctor. While my lungs were declared clear, the persistent, croupy cough still left me feeling unwell and doubting the diagnosis. Nevertheless, knowing it was “just a virus” meant it simply had to run its course, delaying my renovation efforts even further.

Addressing a Critical Issue: The Leaky Vent Stack Repair

Despite these personal setbacks, my determination to push forward with the bathroom renovation never wavered. When I last left you, I had just discovered a significant issue: moldy sheetrock in the attic directly beneath a leaky vent stack. This discovery turned into an immediate priority, a crucial detour that needed to be addressed before any further cosmetic work could proceed. Water damage, especially from a roof leak, can lead to much larger structural problems if left untreated, making this repair paramount.

The solution turned out to be surprisingly straightforward and budget-friendly. I used a simple $3 Rain Collar to cover the leaky vent stack. This ingenious device simply slides over the existing boot, creating an instant and effective seal. The installation was far easier than I had anticipated, proving that not all critical repairs require extensive time or expense. To ensure peace of mind and provide a failsafe, I placed a disposable tin pan directly beneath the repaired vent stack in the attic. This way, if the seal ever fails in the future, any potential drips will be collected, evaporating before they can damage the drywall again. This proactive approach led me to install similar pans under the other two vent stacks in my attic as well – better safe than sorry!

Undertaking roof work always presents its own set of challenges, and this job was no exception. Maneuvering on the steep roof, especially transitioning from the roof surface back to the ladder, requires careful footing and a steady hand. My husband, Wes, plays a vital role in these scenarios, always holding the ladder securely and standing ready to break my fall should anything go awry. His presence provides immense reassurance, allowing me to focus on the task at hand. Thankfully, his assistance has always meant “so far, so good,” keeping me safe throughout these precarious tasks.

Back to Basics: Sheetrock Installation and Drywall Mastery

With the urgent vent stack repair successfully completed, I could finally refocus my energy on the main renovation. The immediate task was to finish installing the remaining sheetrock, a fundamental step in creating the new structure of the bathroom. This foundational work is critical, as it dictates the smoothness and integrity of the finished walls and ceiling.

After all the new sheetrock was securely in place, it was time for what I affectionately call my “favorite” part – mudding! (Heavy sarcasm intended, for anyone who has ever tackled this task.) This stage involves meticulously covering all the screw heads, taping all the new joints, and then applying multiple layers of joint compound to create a seamless surface. The ceiling, in particular, presented a unique challenge. Due to the complete reconfiguration of the space, I had opted to leave the existing sheetrock on the ceiling, patching the numerous areas where old walls and pipes once stood. This resulted in a ceiling that had many broken parts, holes, patches, and seams, requiring extra attention and reinforcement to achieve a smooth, uniform finish. This complex patchwork meant that standard mudding wouldn’t be sufficient on its own to prevent future cracks.

Reinforcing the Ceiling with FibaFuse Fabric

To ensure the ceiling’s long-term integrity and prevent any cracks from reappearing, I employed a strategic reinforcement technique. I covered the entire ceiling with 36-inch wide FibaFuse reinforcement fabric. This fiberglass-based fabric is incredibly strong and designed to provide superior crack resistance, particularly useful in areas with multiple patches or joints. Its open-mesh design allows for easier embedment and smoother finishes compared to traditional paper tape.

When working with FibaFuse tape or fabric, it’s absolutely essential to wear nitrile gloves. The fiberglass shards, while effective for reinforcement, can be quite sharp and irritating to the skin. To apply the fabric, I used a thinned joint compound. The easiest and most efficient method I’ve found is to roll the thinned compound onto the ceiling with a paint roller, ensuring even coverage. Once the compound is applied, the FibaFuse fabric is pressed firmly into it with a trowel, embedding it smoothly and securely. This technique creates a strong, stable surface that will withstand the test of time.

This method of rolling on joint compound is incredibly effective for applying large quantities quickly and evenly, especially when you’re undertaking tasks like skim coating over textured walls to achieve a smooth, modern finish. It saves significant time and effort compared to applying compound solely with a trowel.

For both skim coating the remaining textured walls from the existing bathroom and applying the reinforcement fabric to the ceiling, I relied on a 24-inch smoothing blade. This wider blade allows for much faster and more efficient application, helping to create those coveted flat, smooth surfaces that are essential for a professional finish. It’s an indispensable tool for achieving a flawless drywall job.

The Quest for Perfection: Sanding and Priming

Once the mudding and reinforcement were complete, the next grueling but absolutely critical step was sanding. As someone who tackles all my own drywall work, room by room, I finally decided to invest in a serious piece of equipment: a Festool drywall sander. While certainly an expensive and heavy tool, its performance is unparalleled. It dramatically reduces the effort and dust associated with sanding, making a tedious job much more manageable and efficient. The investment quickly pays off in saved time and a superior finish.

Even with the Festool sander, the pursuit of perfection requires an extra touch. I followed up with a detailed hand sanding using a sponge, meticulously searching for any and every imperfection – no matter how tiny. I used spackling paste to fill a few minor spots, allowing them to dry before a final light sanding. This iterative process of filling, sanding, and re-checking is key to achieving a truly flawless surface ready for paint.

Before any primer or paint could be applied, I thoroughly vacuumed both the walls and the ceiling to remove every last speck of drywall dust. This step is crucial, as dust left behind can compromise paint adhesion and create an uneven finish. Only after this meticulous cleaning was completed did I proceed with priming. Priming is an essential step that seals the drywall, ensures uniform paint absorption, and provides a perfect base for the final coats of paint.

Ceiling Painted, Walls Primed: Decisions for the Future

Jack and Jill bathroom update

With the primer dried, I went ahead and painted the ceilings. Choosing a crisp, clean white for the ceiling always helps to brighten the space and make it feel more expansive. The walls, however, are currently only primed. This decision was deliberate, as I wanted to keep all my options open for the final wall treatment. I’m still debating between installing wainscoting for a classic, detailed look or simply painting them a chosen color. Regardless of the final decision, having the walls perfectly primed means they are completely “paint-ready,” ensuring a smooth and professional finish whatever direction I choose to go.

Looking Ahead: Custom Cabinets and Resumed Progress

With the drywall, ceiling, and initial priming stages complete, the bathroom is truly beginning to take shape. My focus has now shifted to building the custom cabinets, a stage that promises to bring unique character and functionality to the space. This is a part of the renovation I particularly enjoy, as it combines precision craftsmanship with creative design. I’m eager to share the progress on these bespoke pieces in the next update.

Hopefully, “life” will cooperate a bit more in the coming weeks and allow me to dedicate uninterrupted time to this project. I’m not particularly adept at multi-tasking, so these frequent interruptions have certainly caused some major irritation, even if I can laugh about it now! The goal is to power through these final stages and unveil the stunning transformation of our Jack and Jill bathroom. Stay tuned for more!
