Fawn’s Library: The Next Volume

Transforming Our Home: A Week of Progress on the DIY Built-In Library – Part 2

Welcome back to the ongoing saga of building our dream home library! If you’ve been following along, you know we’re on a mission to create a beautiful, custom built-in sanctuary for our books. Last week, we successfully laid the groundwork, getting all our main bookshelf frames meticulously constructed. The room already felt like it was beginning to take shape, promising the cozy, organized space we’ve always envisioned. This week, however, proved to be a test of patience, persistence, and partnership, as we navigated unforeseen hurdles and pushed forward with critical installation steps. From mastering the tricky art of MDF priming to strategizing the delicate dance of installing massive units in a confined space, every day brought new lessons and triumphs.

For those just joining, you can catch up on Part 1 here to see where our journey began. This installment delves into the nitty-gritty of Week 2, exploring the challenges of project delays, the satisfaction of overcoming them, and invaluable tips for anyone embarking on a significant home improvement project with a partner.

The Waiting Game and the MDF Priming Saga

Every DIY project, no matter how meticulously planned, inevitably throws a curveball. For us, the major obstacle this week was a strategically (or perhaps inconveniently) placed light switch. Our plans for the built-in units meant the switch had to be relocated to ensure a seamless fit and continued functionality. Electrical work, while crucial, is one area where I firmly believe in calling in the experts. It’s not just about getting the job done, but getting it done safely and correctly. This meant a slight pause in our hands-on progress as we awaited the availability of a qualified electrician. This kind of delay can be incredibly frustrating when you’re eager to forge ahead, but it’s a vital part of responsible home renovation.

However, a pause doesn’t mean idleness. While we waited for the electrical work to be completed, I seized the opportunity to tackle a task that, while mundane, is absolutely critical for the longevity and finish of our bookshelves: priming the MDF. If you’ve ever worked with Medium-Density Fiberboard, you know its unique characteristics. MDF is an incredibly thirsty material, eager to soak up any liquid it encounters, making priming a particularly demanding process. It felt like a bottomless pit, absorbing coat after coat of primer with an insatiable appetite. The edges, in particular, are notorious for drinking up paint, often requiring extra attention to achieve a smooth, consistent surface.

I dedicated countless hours to this seemingly endless cycle of applying primer, letting it dry, and then repeating the process. After approximately three coats of primer and what felt like 22 hours of continuous work, my arms were aching, but the bookshelves were finally coated and ready for the next stage. This wasn’t just about applying paint; it was about creating a durable, even foundation that would prevent the final paint from sinking in, ensuring a professional and long-lasting finish for our library. It’s a testament to the fact that sometimes, the most tedious tasks are the most important for a high-quality result.

Building and Securing the Foundations: Bases and Beyond

With the light switch finally relocated and the priming marathon behind us, we were thrilled to dive into the next phase of our project, guided by the updated plans from Sandra, our design guru. This week’s major structural task involved building the bases for our bookshelves. Thankfully, this part of the construction proved to be relatively straightforward. These bases are more than just an aesthetic addition; they serve a crucial function, elevating the bookshelves from the floor, allowing for the integration of decorative trim, and providing a stable, level foundation for the massive units that would sit atop them. Their construction involved precise cuts and solid joinery, ensuring they could bear the significant weight of the loaded shelves.

However, the ease of building the bases quickly gave way to the considerable challenge of getting the gigantic, heavy bookshelves onto these bases, screwing them securely into place, and, critically, ensuring they were perfectly level. Our chosen room for the library is charmingly compact, and navigating three substantial bookshelf units within such a confined space was nothing short of an ordeal. Each maneuver required careful coordination, brute strength, and an almost acrobatic level of spatial awareness to avoid damaging the walls or the freshly primed units themselves. Lifting these behemoths was a two-person job, requiring us to carefully hoist and slide them into position without scraping the ceiling or tearing up the floor.

Leveling was another critical, time-consuming step. Even a millimeter off can be noticeable in a finished built-in unit, creating unsightly gaps or a warped appearance. We meticulously used shims and a long level, making small adjustments to ensure each unit sat perfectly plumb and level. This precision is paramount for both aesthetics and structural integrity, guaranteeing that once filled with books, the shelves will remain stable and look professional.

The Reality of Couple’s DIY: When to Call It a Night

Working on an intensive DIY project with your spouse can be an incredibly rewarding experience, fostering teamwork and shared accomplishment. But let’s be honest – it also comes with its fair share of challenges, especially when you’re tired, hot, and already pushing against frustrations. The combination of physical exertion, mental fatigue, and the occasional unexpected hiccup can quickly turn a productive afternoon into a test of patience, leading to cramped muscles and cranky dispositions. This week, we definitely hit that wall.

The first evening after completing the bases, we attempted to install the bookshelves. We tried to lift, slide, level, and secure them, following all of Sandra’s excellent instructions. However, the small room, the sheer weight of the units, and our accumulating fatigue meant that nothing seemed to go right. Every adjustment felt futile, every screw seemed to resist. After a few hours of increasingly dirty looks, frustrated sighs, and dwindling progress, we knew we had reached our limit. We’ve learned from past projects that once we hit that point where frustration outweighs productivity, it’s far better to simply call it a night. Pushing through exhaustion and irritation often leads to mistakes, arguments, and even greater setbacks. So, we made the wise decision to put down our tools, retreat, and recharge. Sometimes, the best problem-solving strategy is a good night’s sleep and a fresh start.

Strategies for Harmonious DIY: Partner Edition

The next day, after a good night’s rest and a renewed sense of purpose, we tackled the installation again. And wouldn’t you know it, with clearer heads and a refreshed perspective, we were able to get the bookshelves attached to their bases and securely fastened to the walls with minimal annoyance. It truly highlights the power of taking a break and approaching challenges with a fresh mindset.

Through our many DIY adventures, I’ve stumbled upon a few golden rules for maintaining marital harmony during home projects, especially when working with my husband. My number one tip? Make sure they are well-fed! There’s a direct correlation between blood sugar levels and patience, trust me. So, before or during a particularly challenging task, I make sure to suggest his favorite restaurant or have a hearty meal ready. A happy stomach often translates to a much more agreeable and productive partner. And for an extra boost of goodwill? Stocking up on his favorite beverage, whether it’s a specific brand of beer or a refreshing iced tea, can work wonders. These small gestures acknowledge the effort and stress, making the whole process feel more collaborative and less like a chore.

Beyond food and drink, other strategies include:

  • Defined Roles: Knowing who is responsible for what task can minimize confusion and arguments.
  • Regular Breaks: Step away for 10-15 minutes every hour or so. Hydrate, stretch, and clear your head.
  • Open Communication: Express frustrations calmly, listen actively, and avoid assigning blame.
  • Celebrate Small Wins: Acknowledge every completed step, no matter how minor. This keeps morale high.
  • Sense of Humor: Sometimes, all you can do is laugh at the ridiculousness of a situation.

Implementing these simple tactics can transform a potentially stressful situation into a bonding experience, ensuring that both the project and the relationship emerge stronger.

This Week’s Victories and Project Momentum

Despite the initial slowdown caused by the electrical work, this week ultimately saw significant advancements. We successfully moved the light switch, meticulously primed all the MDF components, constructed sturdy bases, and most importantly, expertly installed and secured the massive bookshelf cabinets to both their bases and the walls. Each step brought us closer to the grand vision of our finished library, and seeing the structures firmly in place was incredibly gratifying.

Here is Jer demonstrating his precision and strength as he attaches one of the units to the wall:

While the waiting period for the electrician was challenging for someone like me who prefers to maintain a steady project momentum, it also reinforced the importance of external dependencies in large-scale DIY. You simply cannot control every aspect, and learning to pivot or utilize downtime effectively becomes a valuable skill. Once that particular hurdle was cleared, we were able to accelerate our pace and make substantial progress, reaffirming that patience, even for the impatient, is a virtue in home improvement.

The Invaluable Role of a Project Guide: Sandra to the Rescue

One of the absolute best aspects of collaborating on this project with Sandra is her exceptional ability to keep me focused and on track. I’ll admit, I often suffer from what I affectionately call “project ADD.” My creative brain loves to jump from one idea to the next, starting a new project before the previous one is fully completed. While everything eventually gets finished, it often means multiple rooms are in various states of disarray for extended periods, rather than just one concentrated mess. This scattered approach can prolong renovation timelines and even increase stress.

With Sandra, it’s a completely different experience. She is incredibly organized and provides clear, sequential plans for what needs to happen next. This structured approach is a game-changer for me. It means I can’t just walk away when I hit a frustrating point or get distracted by a new shiny idea. Her guidance acts as a gentle but firm push, compelling me to work through the challenges and see each step through to completion before moving on. This disciplined approach ensures that our library project progresses steadily and efficiently, preventing it from languishing unfinished. Having a clear roadmap and someone to hold you accountable is truly invaluable for maintaining momentum and achieving success in large DIY endeavors.
