Kitchen Entry Makeover Day 4: Walls Taking Shape

Transforming Our Home: A Journey Through the Kitchen Entry Hallway Makeover and the Birth of a Dedicated Home Office

The seemingly simple task of mudding a patched hole for a new outlet in our custom-built hutch quickly cascaded into a much larger, yet incredibly rewarding, home renovation project. What started as a minor touch-up evolved into a comprehensive makeover of our entry hallway. Faced with an opportunity to enhance the flow and aesthetics of our home, I decided to take on the challenge of skim coating the walls throughout this pivotal space. The previous renovation, which involved the removal of door headers to open up the kitchen entry, effectively extended the walls down the hall, thereby transforming a small corner into what I now affectionately call the “Kitchen Entry Hallway.” This expansion meant a greater canvas to work with and a chance to truly unify the living areas with a smooth, modern finish.

Embracing a Smooth Aesthetic: The Skim Coating Process

For years, the existing wall texture had been a point of contention – a dated finish that detracted from the modern aesthetic we envisioned for our home. Skim coating was the perfect solution, offering a pathway to erase the old and usher in a clean, contemporary look. This technique involves applying a thin layer of drywall compound over the entire wall surface, effectively smoothing out imperfections and existing textures. It’s a meticulous process, requiring patience and a steady hand, but the results are undeniably transformative. The goal was not just to patch a hole, but to create a seamless transition from the kitchen into the heart of our home, ensuring every wall felt intentional and refined.

Here’s a clearer look at the areas we’re discussing:

This image depicts what I initially considered the “Kitchen Entry” – a crucial transition point in our home. And extending further, we have:

The Genesis of a Dedicated Home Office

At the far end of this newly defined hallway lies a room that has been awaiting its true purpose – a space destined to become my dedicated home office. Beyond this future office, another hallway branches off to the right, adding another layer to the home’s intricate layout.

When we first purchased the house, this room was an open, undefined area that I playfully dubbed the “Second Dining Room.” However, its secluded corner location within the house meant it lacked a true functional purpose as an open space. It felt disconnected and underutilized. Recognizing its potential, it became clear that enclosing it would transform it into a perfect home office – a quiet retreat for productivity and focus. And so, the journey to redefine this space began a while ago.

Initial framing work for the new office walls, including the setup for a pocket door to maximize space

I embarked on the initial phase by framing some new walls, carefully designing one to accommodate a space-saving pocket door. Following the framing, I installed drywall on these new sections. My original vision included installing beautiful wood planks on the adjacent wall – directly onto the studs of the new half and over the existing drywall on the older half of the room. This design choice aimed to introduce warmth and character into the future office, creating a dynamic visual contrast with the smooth, skim-coated hallway walls.

Conquering the Unfinished Business: The Urgent Need for Enclosure

However, as often happens with extensive home renovation projects, other priorities inevitably emerged, causing a hiatus in the office conversion. The wood planks remained uninstalled, and the pocket door unfinished, leaving the space in a perpetual state of “almost.” This prolonged openness, while aesthetically tolerable for a time, presented a significant practical challenge, particularly concerning our furry family members.

Our two dogs, Brody and Bella, have distinct personalities and habits. While Brody is impeccably trained and never has accidents indoors, Bella, bless her heart, is an entirely different story. She possesses a mischievous talent for sneaking into open, unsupervised rooms and leaving us an unwelcome “surprise.” It’s a truly frustrating and unsanitary situation. To manage this, we typically rely on baby gates to confine her to designated areas of the house. Yet, there are times when these gates are inadvertently left open – perhaps while I’m moving materials in or out for a project, or simply due to human oversight. Inevitably, Bella seizes these fleeting moments of opportunity, turning our unfinished rooms into her private facilities. This ongoing struggle has underscored the critical importance and urgency of finally enclosing the future office space.

The solution is clear and long overdue. Now, as I meticulously work through the Kitchen Entry Hallway renovation, it’s the perfect opportunity to address this lingering project. I am fully committed to installing the remaining drywall, completing the pocket door installation, and finally creating a secure, enclosed space that serves its intended purpose. This isn’t just about aesthetics anymore; it’s about functionality, cleanliness, and restoring peace of mind to our home.

The Final Hurdle: Addressing the Pocket Door’s Quirks

Before the pocket door can be fully integrated and operational, there’s one last, albeit minor, obstacle to overcome: a persistent creak in the pocket door frame. This seemingly small detail can significantly impact the user experience, and my dedication to quality means it must be addressed. A creaking door, especially one designed for silent, smooth operation, simply won’t do. Troubleshooting and resolving this issue will be the immediate next step, ensuring that when the door is finally closed, it operates flawlessly, providing the quiet solitude essential for a productive home office.

This comprehensive renovation of the Kitchen Entry Hallway and the completion of the home office represent not just a series of DIY tasks, but a significant enhancement to our living environment. From the smooth, modern walls achieved through skim coating to the creation of a functional and pet-proof office, each step brings us closer to a home that is both beautiful and perfectly tailored to our family’s needs. The journey has been long, filled with unexpected detours and challenges, but the vision of a cohesive, functional, and aesthetically pleasing home keeps us moving forward.
